Dardishi is at a pivotal and incredibly exciting moment in its development, having secured the funds from Creative Scotland to conduct an evaluation of our work from the project's inception to present. The purpose of this evaluation is a moment of pause to reflect, and learn from the past five years of Festivals, events, residencies and DIY publishing.

As part of the process of reviewing our DIY publishing, we need to hear from you - the people who contribute to, collect and read our Zine and make the Zines what they are! By answering the questions in this quick survey, you'll help us analyse the impact and success of Dardishi as a project, and help us identify any gaps that we might have in our work. We are also hoping that the data will function as a tool to advocate for further funding in order to support our community of readers and writers.

Thank you and best wishes,
Samar (dardishi founder)

📽️A Feeling Greater Than Love - June 24📽️
93 minutes, Dir: Mary Jirmanus Saba, Lebanon, 2017

A poignant essayistic enquiry into the political activism of factory workers, especially women, in Lebanon before the outbreak of the civil war in 1975.

Through present-day interviews and discussions alongside archival footage, Jirmanus Saba constructs a lucid and informative conversation between past and present, questioning why this type of popular activism now seems to belong to a lost era. Drawing proudly on Lebanon’s militant filmmaking tradition, A Feeling Greater Than Love (Shu'our Akbar Min el Hob) (2017) seeks to reconstruct the spirit of the workers’ revolts, looking to the past to enquire as to how we might transform the present.

Dardishi Festival film strand includes:

📽️The Feeling of Being Watched - June 23📽️
87 minutes, Dir: Assia Boundaoui, USA, 2018

In the Arab-American neighbourhood outside of Chicago where director Assia Boundaoui grew up, most of her neighbours think they have been under surveillance for over a decade. While investigating their experiences, Assia uncovers tens of thousands of pages of FBI documents that prove her hometown was the subject of one of the largest counterterrorism investigations ever conducted in the U.S. before 9/11, code-named “Operation Vulgar Betrayal.” With unprecedented access, The Feeling of Being Watched weaves the personal and the political as it follows the filmmaker’s examination of why her community fell under blanket government surveillance.

Dardishi Festival film strand includes:
📽️ Hollywood Harems Screening & Lecture - 22 June 📽️

24 minutes, Dir: Tania Kamal-Eldin, Egypt (1999)

Join us for a screening of Hollywood Harems, and an introductory lecture from the film’s director, Tania Kamal-Eldin.

This half-hour documentary takes critical aim at Hollywood's abiding fascination with and fantasies about all things east. Juxtaposing film clips from the 20s through the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Kamal-Eldin explores the organisation of gender, race, and s*xuality in Hollywood's portrayal of the exotic east - an indiscriminate fusion of things Arab, Persian, Chinese and Indian. She argues, convincingly, that in abridging cultural plurality and difference, these technicolor fantasies have worked both to shape and reinforce often derogative assumptions about peoples of the east while at the same time reinscribing the moral, spiritual, and cultural supremacy of the Anglo-European west.

Dardishi Festival film strand includes:
📽️ Jasad and the Queen of Contradictions - June 19 📽️

40 minutes, Dir: Amanda Homsi-Ottosson, UK/Lebanon (2011)

The film tackles the subject of s*xuality in Lebanon, giving insight on the rare use of the Arabic language to discuss s*x and erotica.

Lebanese poet and writer Joumana Haddad has stirred controversy in the Middle East for having founded Jasad (the Body), an erotic quarterly Arabic-language magazine. Dedicated to the body’s art, science and literature, Jasad is one of the first of its kind in the Arab world and has caused a big debate in the Arabic region not only for its explicit images, erotic articles and essays on s*x in Arabic but also for the fact that an Arab woman is behind it all.
