What is initiative....What is the Initiative.. Black has obviously

played quite aggressively in the opening, pushing hiskingside pawns forwards. The pawnsare not an immediate threatto White'sking because they still lacksufficientpiece support to be consideredreallydangerous. For now, they havealsocreated a problem for Black to findsafetyfor his king. In addition, the pawns canconsidered weak, along withh the d6-pawnand the b6-square, at which the f2-bishopis is already pointing, with a potential a4 follow-up. Are the weaknesses in Black'sposition sufficient for White to win? Idon'tthink so, but if White can makeenoughthreats to start forcing Black intoadefensive role, then there is potential. That is what working with theinitiative isall about. master Learn Chess

Baltic Defense.....Baltic Defense..The next game is perhapsan example of naïvety, as much as anythingelse. In many queenside openings,Blackstruggles to develop his queen'sbishop, and the temptation to bring it outearly is always a strong one. A good exampleis the so-called Baltic Defence 1 d4 d52c4 f5. Unfortunately, if things were reallythat simple, the Queen's Gambit wouldhave gone out of fashionyearsago, andpractice suggests that Black'sposition israther dodgy... Learn Chess

Silence is Gold...Silence is Gold.."Speech may be silver, but silence isgold", as my formerLatin teacher wasfond of remindingrecalcitrantschoolboys. It seemsto me that silenceis a very muchunderrated quality, especially in ournoise-dominatedworld. Even today, however, there aretimes when words fail one andsilenceis really all that remains. minority attack....minority attack..The minority attack is astrange area oftheory. As far as I know,Nimzowitsch, who was very concernedwith therestraint of pawn majorities, never dealtwith attacking them from aposition ofnumerical inferiority. Two minor pieces face rook and a pawn....

Two minor pieces face rook and a pawn.Once again two minor pieces face arookand a pawn, but this case is verydifferent.First of all, White has the twoknights, which is the worst pair ofminor pieces in aposition like this, which is open and does notprovidesupport-points for the knights.

Secondly, the position is tailor-madeforBlack's rooks, with both thee-file andespecially the open d-fileoffering_attractive posts. Thirdly,White'sattacking chances arenon-existent.These factors more thanbalance theadvantage conferred by thetwo minorpieces in the middlegame, andtheposition is slightly better for BlackHowever, White is far from lost; a

crucial factor is whether his Bishop can... Learn Chess

Two minor pieces are generally worth more than a rook in all phases of the game In the middlegame two minor pieces are worth more than a rook and a pawn in the great majority of cases whereas in the endgame they are more or less balanced In almost any situation the two bishops are worth more than other minor-pieces combinations the key is difference between the middlegame and the endgame is that the attacking chances provided by the two minor pieces are only relevant in the middlegame and are especially valuable when Queens are still on the board moreover as the game progress files tend to be opened which enhances the power of the rooks.. Here's a trickier case Black has a pawn for the exchange and in addition White's Bishop is blocked in by its own pawns leaving him with almost no dark square control Moreover there is no immediate prospect of White opening file for his rook Objectively the position is equal Learn Chess

11/12/2023

The Advance variation..the voluntary advance of the e-pawn by 3 e5 ,although rather straightforward,is also in some ways the most principled continuation. By establishing an advanced post in enemy territory , White assures him self a space advantage and creates some preconditions for a future king-size attack .In the immediate future, however,White will have to concern him self with securing his position, since for the moment his opponent obtains a relatively free hand both sides will continue developing but Black aslo need to achieve some more concrete benefits since otherwise at the end of the opening a slightly inferior and rather prospect less middle game will a wait him # Learn Chess
