The Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists is excited to announce the 2025 A-Mark Prize for Investigative Journalism in Minnesota, which seeks to recognize outstanding investigative journalism in our state with $15,000 in prize money for journalists and their newsrooms.

This new contest is seeking ambitious, well-researched reporting that may expose a wrong, hold powerful individuals accountable, or explore a complex problem, issue or subject. The cash prizes, sponsored by the A-Mark Foundation, will be awarded at the 2025 Page One Awards in June.

Submissions are due Friday, Feb. 28. Read more about the prize and eligibility requirements: https://www.mnspj.org/2025/01/14/mnspj-introduces-the-a-mark-prize-for-investigative-journalism-in-minnesota/

The 2024 Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists Intern Night will be an excellent opportunity to learn about journalism internships throughout the state, network with media professionals and meet fellow journalism students from local colleges.

No previous internship experience is required to attend! After remarks from a panel of editors and media professionals, small-group breakout sessions will offer "speed dating"-style meetings with industry insiders. And yes, we'll treat you to free pizza.

Our October event will take place at Minnesota Public Radio, a secure facility, and a digital ticket/RSVP through EventBrite (and an I.D.) is a must. Space is limited. Get your free ticket today!

Are you a college student looking for an internship in news media, or an intern looking for your first job? Find out how to break in here!

NEXT WEEK: Join us for a virtual panel on Thursday, Sept. 12, to hear how Minnesota Star Tribune reporter Andy Mannix and photojournalist Renée Jones Schneider collaborated to produce MNSPJ’s 2024 Story of the Year, “What happened to Heather Mayer?“

Page One judges lauded the pair for their deep investigation of an often misunderstood community. The end result was a compelling narrative that treated survivors with dignity and respect, while also pointing out serious shortcomings in the criminal justice system.

From noon to 1 p.m., we’ll break down the story from its genesis to publication, talk about how to gain the trust of sources and hold a Q&A for other Minnesota journalists with questions about the reporting process.

Tune in via Zoom on Sept. 12 at noon!

Attention Media Outlets: Here’s $2,500 toward a St. Paul-focused intern this summer.

On behalf of the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists and ThreeSixty Journalism, we invite you to submit your interest in hosting a college intern this summer who would focus primarily (51%+) on producing non-crime news about St. Paul. The St. Paul Jaycees Charitable Foundation has already committed $2,500 toward this internship. Interested news outlets should respond by April 17.

The board of the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists, together with ThreeSixty Journalism, a nonprofit housed at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, have been awarded $2,500 toward a college student internship this summer at a Twin Cities news media outlet. The St. Paul Jaycees Charitable Foundation is funding this opportunity, with the expectation MNSPJ will help recruit and select a potential employer to host a full- or part-time summer internship.

MNSPJ, ThreeSixty Journalism and the St. Paul Jaycees Charitable Foundation are proud to have selected Gwynnevere Vang, an undergraduate at the University of St. Thomas, as our summer 2024 news intern.

Media outlets interested in hosting Vang this summer are invited to complete this application by April 17.

Among the expectations:
-- A majority of the student's summer reporting (51%+) must be devoted to non-crime news specific to St. Paul.
-- Matching funds are strongly encouraged but not required.
-- The internship may be full- or part-time.

About Gwynnevere Vang:

Vang, a member of the (Oakdale) Tartan Senior High School class of 2022, was named the 2022 ThreeSIxty Journalism Scholar. She received a scholarship to study journalism in the Department of Emerging Media at the University of St. Thomas College of Arts and Sciences.

In fall 2022, Vang was selected as an inaugural member of The New York Times Corps, a talent-pipeline program for college students to receive career guidance from Times journalists over a multiyear period. She is currently an editor of TommieMedia on campus.
