i have had a weird history with voting for the president, and my views on voting have changed dramatically over the years. in 2004 i voted for george w bush. in 2008 i voted for Obama. in 2012 I abstained from voting. in 2016 I voted for Jill Stein. in 2020 I voted for Biden and today I voted for Kamala Harris. I vote in a reliably red state so my vote here doesn't matter all that much, although it's probably still useful and interesting to see what the popular vote is going to be (remember in 2016 trump lost the popular vote by a greater margin than any president in history).
there are a few things about voting that I have changed my mind on over the years - i used to think it didn't really matter who the president was, that they were just figureheads without much direct power. this is obviously false. Especially in the case of Trump who has managed to completely bend the entire republican party to his will. I used to think third party voting was a viable political strategy - and don't get me wrong, I am not the type of person who will try to pressure you into voting for any particular person, vote for whoever you want, it's your right as an American. However, if we're being logical rather than emotional, and paying attention to history, third party voting is just something that does not work and never has. It sucks that this is true, but we have to be realistic. If anything, it makes it more likely for the worse candidate to win. I used think voting for the lesser of two evils was unacceptable, but this is just an immature way to go about your life. Life is all about hard choices. If you refused to make a choice every time none of the options was absolutely perfect you would never get anything done. Interestingly, this choice is not hard. In all the times I've had an opportunity to vote I've never been presented with such an easy choice. But the fact that it isn't for a lot of people says a lot about the state of this country, our media, and our political party system. But that's a whole nother conversation.
