IPHO TAWI-TAWI CELEBRATES WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 2023

Bongao, Tawi-Tawi – In recognizing the celebration of World Mental Health Day this October, the IPHO Tawi-Tawi joined by the representatives from Ministry of Health-BARMM, was inspirited by this year’s emphasis on Mental Health as a Universal Human Right by holding a multisectoral Mental Health Awareness Seminar, anchored with the theme of “Make Mental Health and Well-being for All, A Global Priority”, on October 13, 2023 at IPHO Conference Hall, Lamion, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi. The event was participated by representatives from different sectors in Tawi-Tawi, including the men-in uniform, local government units, government agencies, academe, public health workers, and others.

The event aimed to bring key stakeholders together to help raise mental health awareness; promote understanding and enable well-aligned partnerships among government, academe, health, and other sectors for the promotion of mental health and well-being.

The event was graced with a welcome message by the Provincial Health Officer II of IPHO, Dr. Sangkula G. Laja, underscoring the rationale of the conduct of the said event by bringing awareness to the crucial topic of mental health as well as to reduce stigma associated with mental health illnesses. He also shed light on the current state of mental health in the province and emphasized the existing services offered by the IPHO

Dr. Rowell Quiogue, Municipal Health Officer of RHU Panglima Sugala, who served as Resource Speaker, gave a brief presentation of basic concepts and keynotes about mental health.

Idris Jumianjang, Assistant Provincial Coordinator of MhGAP Program, explained the existing mental health referral pathways to identify individuals with mental health needs and connect these individuals with the appropriate mental health supports and services.

The event’s highlight was the Commitment Pledge, which was fulfilled by the participating sectors through signing up demonstrating their shared commitments to support mental health promotion. The event was motivated to create a collaborative platform where various sectors comes together to advance knowledge, advocate, raise awareness, and take concrete actions to expand and promote mental health programs and services for communities in Tawi-Tawi.

In her Closing Remarks, Elsa Pescadera, Chief of Technical Division, expressed her appreciation to the participating sectors for support in addressing the mental health issues in the province.

IPHO conducts Orientation on School-Based Immunization Program to School Nurses and Public Health Workers of Tawi-Tawi

Bongao, Tawi-Tawi – The IPHO Tawi-Tawi of the Ministry of Health BARMM, in collaboration with the MBHTE, will be conducting the School-Based Immunization (SBI) program on October, this year. School-Based Immunization is done to immunize school children enrolled in Grade 1 and 7 with Measles-Rubella (MR) and Tetanus Diphtheria (Td); and Grade 4 female learners ages 9-13 years old with 2 doses of HPV vaccine. This strategy formed part of the plan of the National Immunization Program to achieve one of its objectives in increasing vaccination coverage among targeted population groups across lifespan.

The School-Based Immunization program will be done to provide booster vaccines to school-age children to ensure that high levels of protection are maintained because the protection provided by some of the vaccines given to infants decline over time.

To ensure that this program is very well understood and delivered, IPHO recently conducted Orientation on Guidelines on School-Based Immunization Program for School Nurses and Public Health Workers last October 10-11, 2023 at IPHO Conference Hall, Lamion, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.

The activity aims to raise awareness on the value of life-course immunization especially among adolescents, highlighting on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination to prevent cervical cancer; demonstrate the importance of multi-sectoral collaborations in implementing immunization program; and discuss the guidelines and plans for the scale up and implementation of the SBI activity in the province.

Dr. Sangkula G. Laja, Provincial Health Officer II, graced the event. In his message, he emphasized that the school nurses will be taught to refresh their skills in administering correct procedures and techniques in preparing equipment to be used, including preparation and administration of vaccines. He also urged the school nurses to let the parents of identified school children undertand the importance of vaccination to include their kids in the school-based immunization program since this will ensure high level of protection

Elsa B. Pescadera, Chief of Technical Division, explained the implementing guidelines on HPV vaccination. She also stressed the need to prioritize adolescents’ immunity because they are more susceptible to communicable diseases due to their rigorous activities and risky behaviors that they become potential for outbreaks in schools and communities.

The vaccination team will not have pregnant female eligible targets be immunized due to high risks that is why IPHO and MBHTE will conduct first hand screening of all female students before immunization.

Nurmina Idlasan, Nurse Coordinator for the Provincial National Immunization Program (NIP), explained since the age range most likely belongs to minors, the IPHO will strictly observe the “No Parental Consent, No Vaccine Policy.” It is assured that these free vaccination services to be administered by the health workers are voluntary since only students with parental and guardian consent shall be vaccinated.

Proper storage and administration of vaccines also discussed during the activity. This was deeply explained by Karsum Hajad, Cold Chain Manager for COVID-19 vaccines, emphasizing that proper vaccine storage and handling practices plays a major role in protecting individual and communties from vaccine preventable diseases.

The School Nurses of MBHTE agreed to support the SBI program through the provision of the needed master list of eligible learners to their respective counterpart Rural Health Units; and conduct of health promotion advocacies for teachers, parents, and learners through appropriate platforms.
