Julie Scheina Editorial Services A former senior editor at Little, Brown with 17+ years of experience editing children's & YA fiction I’d love for you to check it out!

I am a former senior editor at Little, Brown Books for Young Readers with over fifteen years of experience editing acclaimed and bestselling books for children and young adults. I have edited more than 200 titles across a variety of genres, from picture books and poetry collections to middle grade and young adult novels, and I bring this depth of experience and industry knowledge to every project.

I love collaborating with authors and illustrators, helping to identify a work’s strengths and weaknesses, and ensuring that an author or illustrator’s vision is shining through from start to finish. Authors who have worked with me have called me “the very best kind of editor” (Suzanne Selfors), “my most valued editorial partner” (Margaret Stohl), “a fantastic resource of editorial wisdom for a first time novelist” (Kaia Moritz), and “everything I could have hoped for in an editor…her gentle guidance has made me actually love the revision process, something I have never experienced before” (Cheryl Renee Herbsman). Books that I have edited have spent more than 125 combined weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and include the #1 New York Times bestselling Beautiful Creatures novels by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl; The Lucy Variations by National Book Award finalist Sara Zarr; Iron Hearted Violet by Newbery Medal winner Kelly Barnhill; the Imaginary Veterinary series by Suzanne Selfors, illustrated by Caldecott Medal winner Dan Santat; Lamda Literary Award finalist I Am J by Cris Beam; New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book Red Knit Cap Girl by Naoko Stoop; as well as titles with authors including Jennifer Brown, Jackson Pearce, April Lindner, and Jennifer Rush. Other clients include Bloomsbury (an imprint of Macmillan), Greenwillow (an imprint of HarperCollins), the Gernert Company, Writers House, and Greenhouse Literary. Whether you are an author, illustrator, agent, packager, or publisher, I am available for a range of editorial services for children’s and young adult projects, including critiques; detailed editorial feedback; developmental and line editing; query, synopsis, proposal, and copy review; as well as consultation and coaching. I also have experience as a speaker and presenter for conferences, panels, and workshops. To learn more about the editorial services I offer, see other books I’ve edited, read additional testimonials, and request a free project estimate, please visit www.juliescheina.com. I also recently launched a free resource for writers, Your Editor Friend. The website has new letters from me every Wednesday with writing guidance, revision advice, and encouragement.

As a kid, I loved reading historical fiction but hated dry history textbooks and most (equally dry) nonfiction. I wish I’d read more books like THE MONA LISA VANISHES and realized at a younger age how engaging, dynamic, and surprising nonfiction can be!

THE MONA LISA VANISHES is an exceptional example of how to make familiar topics and tropes (da Vinci, The Mona Lisa, the unexpected thief, the brilliant detective) feel fresh and accessible to modern readers.

If you’re a writer or reader of nonfiction, historical fiction, thrillers, or mysteries, check out this book for its:
* Short chapters, engaging art, lively writing, and cliffhangers that are accessible to readers of MG novels, graphic novels, chapter books, illustrated nonfiction, and beyond
* Rich physical details and emotions that build suspense and allow readers to envision themselves in the characters’ shoes (like sweating inside a storage closet alongside the thief!)
* Thoughtfully forged connections across seemingly disparate eras, from the Renaissance to turn-of-the-century Paris to the present

If you’re a writer or reader of middle grade adventure, historical, or fantasy (or if you read & loved THE TRUE CONFESSIONS OF CHARLOTTE DOYLE as a kid 🙋🏻‍♀️), you should read THE LAST MAPMAKER by Christina Soontornvat. I read this genre-bending novel recently and it quickly shot to the top of my recommended reading list for its:
* Compelling, flawed characters
* Rich yet succinct prose
* Exceptional balance of world-building, action, suspense, & character development
* Timeless, thought-provoking themes

Writers: if you’re looking to improve these areas of your craft, I recommend adding TLM to your list of books to read & study. (And you don’t just have to take my word for it—check out those stickers!)

What recent line from a book has compelled you to read it again? Here’s one of mine, from Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro: “It’s like walking past a mirror you’ve walked past every day of your life, and suddenly it shows you something else, something troubling and strange.”
