Miniture
Here's another Throwback Thursday! This was a more recent project; created for my final year of university. I wanted to composite using green screen footage over video. Whilst I had composited a video onto a virtual environment before, I'd never added video onto another video. So, I created Miniture. It's a short sequence, about a small man who lives on a shelf, and explores the world around him.
I filmed the piece in the University's television studio, which I had used a few times before. The studio came with a green curtain and flooring, which allowed me to film full-body green screen footage. I also made use of the studio lighting, which was easily adjustable and interchangeable. I recorded the video using a Canon 600d DSLR camera, with a tripod for stability. Later, I recorded the background footage in my bedroom, using the same DSLR and tripod set up.
The footage was then edited in Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Premiere Pro. After Effects was used for the colour correction, matting and any special effects. Premiere Pro was used for editing the video, as well as the sound. All audio was recorded in post. The narration was recorded in a sound treated room, using a microphone with a pop filter. The music used was royalty free, and acquired online. The sound was mixed and recorded via the digital audio workspace Reaper.
Overall, there are issues with this video. However, I am overall happy with the final production. It was ambitious, but with plenty of research and dedication, I made something I was proud of.
Barry Island 2D Animation
Throwback Thursday! Almost three years ago, I created this short video as part of my degree. The aim was to use 2D images and photographs to create a 3D virtual environment. For my assignment, I created an animated 2D image of Barry Island's iconic (and now defunct) Log Flume. The video features the riders going up the chain lift hill, before circling around the top to the drop... with a splash and a scream afterwards. The sound of the merry British seaside fills the air, with organs playing an iconic tune and seagulls calling from above. I wanted this image to capture the magic of the British seaside funfair; something that I grew up with as a child. There is no video in my animation. Every source of animation is a 2D photograph.
Though, I had a few issues with creating this animation. I took the picture of the structure on an overcast day, which made seperating the images very difficult. Especially the railings at the top, that became quite bitty after the sky was removed. There were a few inaccuracies as well. For anyone who has ever riden on the Log Flume at Barry Island, they would know that the cars were designed to look like animals. However, as the ride had been closed for years, I couldn't get a picture of the cars in use. I could only photograph the structure. I tried to find a picture online, but I couldn't find one suitable for the animation or of high enough quality. Therefore, I had a use a photograph of a generic log-shaped car.
