Sardar Amar Singh, Lion of Club Aman

Born in 1938, Sardar Amar Singh, who began his career at Wearne Brothers, played key roles in various charitable and sports events, including Kelab Aman and MSSSC. He served as treasurer and secretary for both the Sikh Welfare Society Malaysia and MSSSC.

A long-time figure in Malaysian hockey, he was involved in the run-up tothe 1975 World Cup. He narrowly lost the Malaysian Hockey Federation secretary election by a single vote, and even that by the casting vote awarded by the MHF president Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

As a founder member of Kelab Aman, he earned respect in club circles, with one former club president calling him the "Lion of the Club."

In 1988, during the Commonwealth Games, Amar Singh managed the cricket grounds, known as the best oval in the country. His successful management led to an invitation to the next games in Manchester. He also played a significant role during the first SUKOM games and hosted visits from notable figures, including the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Prince Edward.

Amar Singh’s legacy lives on in the history of SUKOM KL 98, where Kelab Aman was a key venue. His contributions will be long remembered.

A vast majority of proponents of the Akal Takhat tell us that the throne was set up by the Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Sikh Guru.

Karminder Singh Dhillion takes a hard look at evidence at hand. He raises one critical questions: Why is there no mention of it anywhere in any historical record for almost 250 years up to 1850?

This comprehensive analysis challenges many deeply held views of Sikhs on the Akal Takht, a favourite stopover for many Sikhs when they visit Amritsar, Panjab.

The Supremacy of the Akaal Takht: A Continuing Debate

By Gurnam Singh | Opinion |

The recent appointments and removals of Jathedars at the Akaal Takht have reignited longstanding debates regarding its role, legitimacy, and authority within the Sikh Panth. From contested dismissals to calls for institutional reform, the question of how the Akaal Takht is governed, the post of Jathedar, and whether it holds, or should hold, supreme religious authority, has never been more pressing.

Currently, appointments and dismissals of Jathedars are managed by a small subcommittee within the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) based in Amritsar, which is widely seen as being under the political influence of the Badal-led Akali Dal faction. The recent dismissals of Giani Raghbir Singh and Giani Harpreet Singh have provoked criticism from across the global Sikh disapora, with various ‘Panthic’ groups demanding the creation of a formal constitution to define the powers, procedures, and protections of the Akaal Takht. - Gurnam Singh

From Frankfurt to Tampa, Vaisakhi anew

By Asia Samachar | Vaisakhi 2022 |

More Sikh groups around the globe are marking the birthday of Guru Nanak as they celebrate Vaisakhi this year.

Frankfurt in Germany, Tampa in the United States and Chandigarh in India have informed Asia Samachar that they are celebrating Guru Nanak’s birthday in April this year, adding to the new and novel movement around the world.

On Wednesday (April 6), it was reported that Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Singapore and Ilford (Britain) will be seeing events marking both the creation of the Khalsa and the birthday of Guru Nanak. The former is familiar territory to most Sikhs, but the later is part of a growing awareness of when Guru Nanak was actually born.

For Tampa Gurdwara, it will actually be their second year in a row celebrating the birth of Guru Nanak on Vaisakhi.

“We implemented the Mool Nanakshahi Calendar (2003) last year. The response has been mixed but mostly welcoming. People are very afraid of break away from traditions but acknowledge the truth behind such actions,” a gurdwara official told Asia Samachar.

Why do Sikhs celebrate Vaisakhi? Malaysian-born Gurpreet Kaur Bains tells Canadian radio station CBC how the Khalsa was established, the meaning of Singh and Kaur, the Nishan Sahib (the Khalsa flag) and the huge Vaisakhi melas the world over. In Malaysia, she tells CBC's Nabila Qureshi how much she loves the food served at gurdwaras. Don't miss her humming the favourite Vasakhi music of his father and her grandfather. Maiden Sikh camp for Subang Sikhs is now underway

By Subang Sikhs | Malaysia |

We proudly announce the very first Mini Samelan that is being held at Gurdwara Sahib Subang (GSS). This event is a joint effort of the Subang Sikh Youth Club (SSYC), Sisters & Brothers Club, the Punjabi Education Council (PEC), and the Subang Gurudwara itself. This Samelan marks the beginning of a new tradition for us, one where each year’s Samelan is themed around one of the Ten Sikh Gurus. And we’re starting with the foundation with our first Guru, Guru Nanak Ji.

We took into consideration of the busy lifestyles of many families and youths in Klang Valley that are juggling with their work and life commitments, which can make it difficult for them attend longer Samelans, especially at this time of the year. To overcome this, our dedicated team has come together to organise this 3-day Mini Samelan that is held over the weekend. This way, everyone can experience the joy and meaning of a Samelan, even within a busy schedule.

We in Subang strive to focus on building a close-knit, engaged community where meaningful connections are nurtured and timeless Guru’s teachings & values are passed on with a purpose that leaves an impact on ones life.

Gurindervir Singh becomes India’s fastest man, clocks 10.20s for 100m

By Asia Samachar | India |

Gurindervir Singh emerged as India’s fastest men when he broke the men’s 100m national record with a 10.20-second dash at the opening session of the Indian Grand Prix 1, in Bengaluru last week (March 28, 2025).

The 24-year-old Punjab sprinter broke the 10.23 seconds record set by Manikanta Hoblidhar in October 2023.

Gurindervir’s previous personal best, 10.27 seconds, was recorded in 2021, before his spate of medical troubles with a bout with a digestive issue.

He had earlier won 100m gold in the 2021 and 2024 National Inter-State Championships, as well as in the 2024 Federation Cup.
