Producing music that pushes the envelope of pop music.

Something and I made at may or may not be out tomorrow 🤫
I've been thinking a lot about art and spirituality recently.
And it seems to me that our society has come to frame art as revolving around the creator and their experience of the world: art is self-expression, self-development and self-discovery. Without doubt or question, the art itself is seen as the property of its creator: my music, my mixes, my songs.
In an individualistic society, all artistic processes gravitate around the individual.
But anyone who has spent some time making art knows that something magical often happens when we're creating, performing or writing.
Something that feels like it transcends the every day routine of life as a human being on this planet.
Something to remind us that we are not masters of the art we make, only servants.
And whatever that Something is, it is most definitely not ours to claim.
For a moment, Something More.
There are no rules, only conventions.
How it’s going 🫡✌️🎹

Once thing I love about sound design is how playful it feels. You're just out here sprinkle plugins on top of exisiting sounds to change them into something completely new and different...!
Let's make an analog feeling pad in Serum!
God I love sound design...
Oliver packs all the way for me! Hbu, got any fav pack samples?
LESS IS MORE IS LESS IS MORE!
Ever wonder why synths have so many filter options for a simple low-pass?
Some controversial thoughts on Splice... Do you agree?
Making something as simple as a riser yourself can often make a huge difference in how personal and unique the track ends up sounding. Take those extra ten minutes - it's worth it!
Some crazy Panning sound design featuring the one and only Soundtoys - get crazy with it!
When programming any legato instrument in midi, make sure to be hyper aware of where and when your envelope resets are happening! This is especially true in the case of attack-heavy synth basses, where you can use those resets as important groove moments in the arrangement!
Couldn't be happier to launch this new artist spotlight series with a release by the one and only for the first single off of here upcoming EP! Do yourself a favor and go check out this amazing talent!
Co-written, co-produced and mixed by yours truly,

PROTIP! Avoid automating with on/off buttons like the plague. More often than not, this will lead to a big fat click in your arrangement...

Not unlike character arcs in a movie or TV show, good automation is the key to writing a convincing story in music production. Every instrument evolves in its own specific way to play a different role in the whole as the song progresses, allowing it to support the overarching song as the music progresses.

Weekly neo-soul production livestream! come hang! :)))
Working with on his debut EP has been as rewarding as it has been challenging, and I can honestly say it's forced me to rethink the way I work.
~
See, very few artists are bold enough to completely defy genre categorization and refuse clear reference tracks, but Seb is definitely one of them. Taking turns between modern rock, dance pop, 80s metal, hip-hop and pretty much every genre you can think of, Seb always comes into the studio with a fresh idea of who he is and what his music should sound like.
~
And yet, there is a bold aesthetic continuity that we had to explore and refine throughout this EP, so as to ensure that we found some level of method to the madness. How do you blend a trap 808 with a chugging metal guitar? A boom-bap rhythm with a pop vocal stack? Tame Impala-esque transitions into a massive EDM beat? And all within the same track?!! 🤯
~
Trial and error. For hours, and hours, and hours, and then some...
~
And while Seb may be an extreme example of boundless sonic exploration, I don't think there is an artist out there, no matter their level, who can't relate to the push and pull between what your music is, and what you think it could be.
~
Anywayyyy, enough blabbering, go listen to the EP, it's pretty sick tbh.

Big ups to the whole team:

on mixing, on mastering, on drums and percussions (About Time) and well, me and Seb on songwriting and production.

December Rose and I decided to make an acoustic rendition of our latest collab "Shoulder"! Hope you all enjoy! ❤️
Working with on tunes is always an incredible treat. Her vocal talent matched with her unique ear for melody make her one fo the single most talented vocalist I've had the pleasure of working with! 🎤🎤🎤
This new tune - "Shoulder" - actually took me forever to produce, as it became a catalyst for exploring the new artistic direction I was going to take Spatial Soul in 2021. Clearly anchored in the neo-soul movement, but with a distinct pop flair, this tune reflcted my attempt to mix in some concepts of jazz harmony with strong electronic-driven production, pop catchiness, and - of course - some guitar stuffff!
Big thanks to the homie for delivering a killer drum groove and to on the final mastering touches!

Artist Spotlight Series #2 As a producer I enjoy keeping my client roster small instead of working with 20 artists at a time, because I love getting to build deep artistic and personal connections with each of them. And to be a part of artistic journeys when they're getting built form the very ground up is incredibly fulfilling to me. It's an honour to get to do that with @risingatfall. Big-ups to the rest of the team, namely @studio_redtube where we tracked and edited most of the stuff and @carlbahner on the final mastering. Now go get your eardrums smashed 🎸🤘 #musicproducer #modernrock #rockmusic
So I had a whole nice little outro scripted about how chord names don't really matter and it's just about the way it makes you feel at the end of the day. But I feel like that massive grin said it all...! Please never let any insecure theory nerd make you feel bad about not knowing music theory. It's just a tool to be more aware of how the chords you're choosing embed themselves in a particular musical tradition. The only meaningful thing that can ever guide your music is the feeling, in my experience. Massive props to @cinziaandtheeclipse @clerel and @lucatheproducer on the songwriting, production and storytelling of this one...! Always inspired by these three! #musictheory #songwriter #musiciansofinstagram #musicproducer #musicproducerlife
