The great Efren “Bata” Reyes beat me 3-1 to advance to the next round undefeated in the One Pocket event here at the Derby City Classic. 4 players left now. It was such an honour to play the man deep in such a prestigio

Efren Reyes the One Pocket savior
Efren Reyes the best one pocket player of all timeEfren Reyes is considered to be the best player of all time. To me, he is. A humble master of moving, banking, and kicking. When he’s asked how he does it all, he most of the time answers with: “I just got lucky“. He’s a One Pocket genius, inducted in the One Pocket Hall of Fame and 6-time winner of the prestigious Derby City Classic One Pocket division, among many other great wins.
When you’re watching Efren play One Pocket, it looks like he’s just thinking on another level than all other players. A strategist at heart. His creativity is endless. He’s able to turn the game around when he’s in the most difficult situations. So, when you’re stuck in One Pocket, ask yourself: What would Efren do?
Most of us probably don’t come up with the right answer, because he’s a genius and most of us are not. He’s probably also much more creative, but when you’re stuck in a desperate situation in One Pocket you can always try to call upon the One Pocket god Efren, just to give yourself an incentive to push your own creativity.
Referring to the pool god’s made me think about what Michael Phelan once wrote in 1850 in his book ‘Billiards without a Master’:
“To the physiognomist and the silent observer of human nature, there is no game that more thoroughly discloses the various dispositions of men than Billiards. The elated hope, the depressing fear, the sanguine exultation, the mortifying defeat – the philosophical resignation to fate, the indifference of success, and all the multiplied and manifold passions of the human mind, are variously depicted and easily discovered, by an attentive observer, on the countenance of the Billiard player".

Efren Reyes: Bringing the magic of billiards to the poor Philippines
In the Philippines, there is no doubt that Efren Reyes is the most famous sports athlete, creating the most impact on the people here.
Efren Reyes does not like to fight easily
The hero of the poor Philippines
A small part of the Phllippines population lives in poverty, there is almost no form of entertainment with the amount of money available when less than 100 pesos a day. Sometimes, a slum neighborhood has a rugged billiard table, the ball even rolls and bounces but that is how the poor can "play".
Born in a poor countryside in the city of Angeles, Efren Reyes' childhood had a period of no idea what electricity was. Reyes' parents had nine children, and they decided to send Reyes, then 5, to Manila with the simple thought of "let him do something to get something to eat." His uncle Reyes had a billiards shop and he probably never thought his grandson would become a world legend for himself.
That's right, Efren Reyes came up with billiards completely naturally because he used to be the kid in the store. But Reyes wanted more than that, he practiced playing billiards while still having to arrange chairs and stand up to fight.
At the age of 9, Reyes played the first match of his career. He won a bet of 100 USD and immediately sent 90 USD to go home. When Reyes dropped out of school at the age of 15, his talent became widely known not only in Manila, but throughout the Philippines. Everyone's friends loved Reyes so much that he was willing to work as an assistant and carry water because he helped them earn money. Just bet on Reyes' door and win.
At the age of 20, Efren Reyes was too famous and unemployed in the Philippines because no one was foolish to challenge and lose money with him. Young muscle man hit the road with the reputation of "witch billiards" and he continued to "torture" Asia. After that, he set off for the United States and Europe to continue the adventure of the lonely and defeated man.
The strange thing about Efren Reyes is that he doesn't use his real name. Instead, Reyes pretended to play the stage name Morales. At the time, due to limited information, people only knew that the Morales guy who had just brought nearly $ 100,000 in money out of the United States was Efren Reyes and they also admitted that Reyes was scarier than the rumors.
Throughout his career, Reyes has made millions of dollars from official tournaments as well as money from "grass" matches. Honestly, Reyes' naivety was still intact when he admitted he was playing billiards for money, to escape poverty and then passion. Certainly not wrong, but if you do not love the sport, how can Reyes hold the muscle when he is 66 years old and has it all.
For poor Filipinos, Efren Reyes is their idol. He returned to his hometown of Angeles with a pair of shorts, a short-sleeved shirt, a pair of ordinary sandals instead of an elegant suit. He is willing to help people with money, in kind. Efren Reyes also helped build an adjoining team for Philippine billiards, many of which are children of poor families on the islands.
That being said, Reyes has brought miracles from billiards to poor Filipinos.

Not as flashy as most players, Efren "Bata" Reyes looks like a peasant, despite being the world's leading man and a living legend of the poor Filipinos. Whenever returning home, "witch" also always feels confident and no longer cares about having to wear dentures tightly.

A 1985 picture of Efren Reyes as Cesar Morales at Red’s 108-player double elimination tour. He used an alias when he arrived at the States as his real name's reputation already preceded him in the U.S.
According to some of my pinoy friends, getting a visa to come to the US from the Phillipines can be hard during that era, despite being a former US territory.
Using an alias to hide a fearsome reputation sounds alot better than Efren's backers borrowed a passport because they couldn't get Efren's visa approved in time
