The Election Commission of India’s decision to hand over the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and its selection symbol to the Ajit Pawar faction has come as a big setback for the founder of the NCP and India’s senior politician, Sharad Pawar. The Election Commission’s decision has come as a surprise to many, as India has witnessed several such disputes in the past over inheriting the legacy of the founder of a political party after he or she passes away. However, in Sharad Pawar’s case, he is the founder of the party, and this is perhaps the first time that the original founder of the party has lost the name of the party as well as the symbol. Maharashtra, Viens, 48 MPs to the Parliament, has always played a significant role in Indian politics. Ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Maharashtra is considered a battleground state, and the mood on the ground is slightly favoring the MVA alliance, including Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray, and Congress. The BJP has left no stone unturned in terms of trying to weaken the regional players and gain an upper hand in Maharashtra. In this week’s Yen Endra Kelvi, Shabbir Ahmed discusses the Election Commission’s decision and its implications.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, on Tuesday, January 30, directed the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department and the Tamil Nadu government not to allow “non-Hindus who do not believe in Hindu religion” inside all the Hindu temples in the state. The court also ordered the authorities to install boards indicating the same in and around the temples. Justice S Srimathy, while passing the orders, also observed that temples are not ‘picnic or tourist spots’, and that Hindus have the right to maintain their temples as per their customs and practices. The court passed the order while hearing a petition filed by D Senthil Kumar, who runs a shop in Palani and is an organiser of Palani hill temple devotee organisation. He sought installation of display boards showing that non-Hindus are not allowed in the Palani temple. Political parties like the MDMK and CPM have termed that the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court’s judgment will impact the secular nature of the state and have demanded the Tamil Nadu government to appeal against the order. Since their electoral triumph in 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideological fountainhead Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have been actively trying to appropriate the legacies of prominent Indian icons in the country. A similar strategy is also being implemented in Tamil Nadu by various Sangh Parivar organisations. The BJP, as part of a calculated strategy, has been actively trying to appropriate the legacy of Tamil icons, highlighting the contributions of lesser-known figures to bolster their influence in the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent tribute to Rani Velu Nachiyar in his "Mann Ki Baat" broadcast in December 2023, exemplifies this effort to align with Tamil historical figures. Moreover, the BJP has been making deliberate attempts to resonate with Tamil identity by referencing Thirukural, celebrating Sangam era poets, and symbolically incorporating Tamil culture, such as the installation of Sengol in the new parliament building. In this podcast, political activist Mathur Sathya critically examines the BJP's politics of appropriation, shedding light on how the party shapes narratives to consolidate its influence across the country and also explains why these attempts will not yield desired results for the saffron party in Tamil Nadu.
