Port Moresby, Sunday 26th October 2025 โ€“ Prime Minister Hon. James Marape, MP, has expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the Brisbane Broncos for sending both senior menโ€™s and womenโ€™s players to Papua New Guinea this week to inspire young people through sport.

Prime Minister Marape said the visit by the Broncos is more than just a sporting eventโ€”it is an inspiration to the next generation of Papua New Guineans.

โ€œThe Brisbane Broncosโ€™ engagement with our youth through rugby league demonstrates the power of sport to unite, motivate, and shape character,โ€ the Prime Minister said. โ€œWe thank the club for recognising Papua New Guineaโ€™s passion for rugby league and for investing their time and energy to encourage our young people.โ€

The visiting contingent included menโ€™s team stars Adam Reynolds (Captain), Ben Hunt, and Ezra Mam, along with womenโ€™s team players Romy Teitzel, Jada Ferguson, and Shenae Ciesiolka.

Prime Minister Marape reaffirmed his Governmentโ€™s commitment to supporting sports development and partnerships that promote youth empowerment, discipline, and national pride.

โ€œSports diplomacy builds bridges of friendship and opportunity,โ€ he added. โ€œThe Broncosโ€™ visit is a shining example of how international cooperation in sport can positively impact communities.โ€

TURNING BUAI WASTE GREEN

TVWAN News - 25/10/2025

A Port Moresby agriculturalist has turned one of Papua New Guineaโ€™s biggest waste problems into an award-winning solution โ€” converting discarded betelnut husks into an eco-friendly gardening product.

Geno Geno, founder of The Seed Supplier, won the 2025 Lily Homemade Microbusiness Competition for her Areca Fibre Mulch, a sustainable mulch made from buai husks that reduces street litter and helps plants retain moisture.

โ€œOur process removes all bacteria and pathogens,โ€ Geno said. โ€œWeโ€™re working with city managers to expand collection across Port Moresby.โ€

The project impressed judges for its environmental and social impact. Geno received K12,000 in prize money, sponsored by MiBank, the Australian Government through the PNGAus Partnership, and Womenโ€™s Micro Bank.

This is not her first recognition โ€” she also won the 2022 Lily Homemade Competition for her compostable betelnut palm leaf plates and utensils. Since her latest win, she has introduced buai-skin bins and showcased her work internationally in Germany.

Second place went to Carole Cholai, an IT specialist and breast cancer survivor, for her post-mastectomy bra under the SistaLuv Foundation.
Third place went to Nicholar Boas, a Lae agronomist, for her Warapipe Herbal Blue Salt, infused with butterfly pea flowers to combat lifestyle diseases.

The 2025 competition drew 150 entries nationwide, with 15 finalists attending a business workshop at the Womenโ€™s Business Resource Centre. The program continues to empower PNGโ€™s entrepreneurs, turning creative homemade ideas into sustainable small businesses.

A full wrap-up and shopping guide of the top 50 products appears in Lily Magazine Issue #28.
