“The Shark’s not working” is more often a blessing than a curse. My change of fortune with “Tennessee Waltz” forced a lot of reevaluation. If “Tennessee Waltz” was out, that meant “Long Black Veil” wouldn’t really fit for the epilogue and closing credits anymore, either. I immediately began poring over my library of friends’ music, and when I heard Steve Lyons’ “Velvet Sky,” I knew immediately it was perfect. It checked all the same boxes as “Long Black Veil” in terms of tempo and emotion, and it fit right in with the story of DULL SPACE musically and lyrically.
This also gave an opportunity to reexamine the prologue and opening credits. I had read a couple of years ago that indy films should not have long opening credits because the larger audience doesn’t know the actors or crew, and just want to get to the story. I experimented with an animatic of a shorter prologue with no credits, with one of Steve’s instrumentals underneath, and it works so much better.
The lesson: One thing going wrong forced me into making something better.

Those of you who have seen the live play of DULL SPACE may remember “Tennessee Waltz” playing during the opening narration. Well, the publisher, Sony, wants an exorbitant amount of 💰 for use in the film, even if it’s being re-recorded by another artist. I can’t imagine Sony really needs that kind of money from an artist like me for a song that’s almost 80 years old, whose writers are long dead, but not much we can do about it. Time to look for another option. Shame! That song was perfect.

Some of you may have noticed we haven’t had any DULL SPACE: updates for a few weeks. Well, the septic tank at ol’ Light Street Studios took a 💩 (pun intended) so we haven’t been able to have the cast and crew over. It’s supposed to be fixed this week, thank goodness, and we expect to be back in the cockpit on the 15th. In the meantime, I did a little lighting work on the set, and Stephen Lyons and Rebecca Schall are getting ready to record some music for the soundtrack.
Weird…not filming is just as exhausting as filming, only more frustrating.

It’s come a long way! This was our 2nd semi-staged reading of DULL SPACE, performed at The Rock School in 2017. The script was rewritten for Brian A Wilson following his powerhouse performance in the first reading in 2012. This 2nd reading was to be a lead-up to PhillyFringe. Unfortunately, the funding didn’t come through for the rather advanced staging we were planning, and Brian had to move on to another offer. The result, Dan and Rebecca came on board for the stripped-down play that was presented in 2019, and they have both more than earned their roles to this day. But, I am still so grateful to Brian, Victoria, Annette, Paul and Owen for what they did that night. It was an important step in the direction DULL SPACE is heading now.

We reached another benchmark this weekend. We began working with the gimbal. It’s not designed to be used in portrait orientation, so it took quite a bit of experimentation, patience, and explosive cursing.

Taking the good with the bad…
Last summer, we began a conversation with The Franklin Institute to gauge their interest in producing DULL SPACE for Philly Fringe in 2024. Everything seemed very positive, but then 6 months of radio silence. Not even the courtesy of a “F🤬k off!” We finally sent a very direct request for a response, and received a very apologetic reply that they’ve been looking for ways to make it work, but simply can’t squeeze it into their schedule this year. Disappointing, but maybe a gift. Dan, Rebecca, Stefan and Amy & Brian have plenty on their plates with filming and editing this year. Plus, we still have the Liverpool International Theatre Festival in Nova Scotia to look forward to in October. There’s always next year.
As Bo Spassoff always said, “Onward!”

Wow! Thank you to Cameron Johnson Larson and Beth Hegedus for their second donations, and to Jeanne Gimpel Sandella for a very generous first donation! This couldn't have come at a better time. We need to upgrade our data storage, pronto! Beth and Jeanne: Way to represent The Mount!
We are really racking up the footage. We put in a very long, Hollywood shoot day on Saturday. We were planning for 13 hours, but the actors came in prepared and ready to work, and we got it done in just over 10.
Finishing coverage from the port side this weekend, and then moving onto gimbal shots the following week.
This Saturday, after we wrap, I have to clean up and head straight down the the city for the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival's screening of "Astronaut."

One week on; one week off. April 26, 27 & 28 was the West Chester Film Festival, and "Astronaut" was shown twice over the weekend. Lots of positive feedback, and many valuable contacts made. The best part, lots of support from friends, former colleagues, and the cast of DULL SPACE. While we were there, I was able to arrange a conversation between myself, Stephen Lyons, and Rebecca Schall. So, I am now pleased to announce Stephen as the Music Producer for DULL SPACE. Those of you who know Stephen know how eminently qualified he is for this position. For those of you who don’t, Stephen is a talented actor, singer, musician and producer. His involvement with DULL SPACE goes back to the first staged reading in 2012. He is also a good friend and a beautiful soul. I know he is going to do great things for us. Stephen is arranging some old, classic country songs for the soundtrack that will be sung by Rebecca and himself, as well as composing some original incidental music.

It's been a very busy three weeks since my last update. On April 20th we brought our talented still photographer Kim Forbes on set to begin grabbing some publicity shots. It ended up being a bit of an abbreviated day because one of the actors had no voice, but we did manage to get some important shots completed.
