Though he loves the peaks of a dance floor experience, Mendel’s favourite moments both in and outside of the booth are the gentle, the sensual, the sweet ones. Less fist-pumping, more care, more footwork, more smooching. That’s not to say that his sets are low in energy. Mendel understands and builds energy into his sets like no other, creating hugely danceable journeys that often result in unforg

ettable moments of euphoria. From boat parties in Brazil, to his all-nighters at Djoon and Giant Steps, to his own community-based Ciranda events. When it all comes together Mendel’s sensitivity makes for ecstatic dance floor magic. Born and raised in Amsterdam, Mendel bought his first record player from a Waterlooplein market stall at the tender age of 10. He played his first set at 15 in hip-hop temple Cafe De Duivel. In these formative years, Mendel immersed himself in studying the origins of hip-hop, broadening his musical horizon. He got a job at Waxwell Records, a second-hand vinyl institution, and fell further in love with disco, boogie and house - the Black American sounds that have shaped him - as well as musical styles from even further afield. His sets nowadays reflect this broad spectrum of sounds; music that can be plucked from anywhere in the last fifty years, meticulously mixed for maximum emotion.

Sunday is the day! I hope you’ll join us at Ciranda Outdoor.

I’ve always missed a simple outdoor party in Amsterdam. We have a bunch of exciting big festivals, but very few intimate ones. And although I enjoy different types of events, usually the smaller ones are where it happens for me. I love to be on one dance floor, where we share the same music experience with everyone there. Where we can enjoy a broad range of music throughout the day, from gentle to energetic, intense, deep to euphoric. A shared place where it’s easy to have a plethora of moments with friends and people you just met.

The memories of last year’s outdoor editions of Ciranda still bring me joy. Definitely some of my favorite days of the year. I expect this year to be no different: a nice space, a lineup of talented DJs – Ayn, Chima Isaaro, Marcel Vogel, and Nick The Record – and above all, a sweet jumble of people 😘

I took this photo from my studio window a while ago. The old Volkrant newspaper building has been part of my life for a long time. When I grew up I could see the building from our home. When the newspaper left, it became a creative hub with artist studios. On the top floor was the old Canvas, a space with a DIY-feel, where I attended many parties and met new friends. From 2010 and me used to do the ‘I Love Vinyl’ nights there. And later, when they were reconstructing the building, we moved to the basement which was the first iteration of Doka. Quite often there were pools of water on the floor and rubble and pipes everywhere, as it was under a construction site. It definitely had character. Here was also where I got my first residency on thursday nights, which I have fond memories of.
When the Volkshotel was finished there was a newly constructed Canvas on the top floor, we had a couple of parties there, but it fit less well. Quite a few years later the artists, who are housed in a wing of the building, helped redesign the Doka into what it is now; one of my favourite small clubs. So over the years I’ve played in four different spaces in this building, meeting so many people along the way.

In my time working in nightlife I’ve seen many places come and go, which is often a pity. But for now I’m very happy that we found a home for .music that feels right. Why? Come find out this Sunday :) Our last party this year with and yours truly xx

These are the original tapes from Kofi Ayivor’s songs that were recently re-released on Kalita Records. The tapes contain all the separate instrumentation and vocals - although some parts were missing - that were recorded 40 years ago. It’s really a treat to dive into these old recordings, hearing all the different instruments and reconstructing/remixing those songs decades later. Thanks Kofi and Kalita for involving me in this lovely project.

Just 11 more sleeps till Ciranda Outdoors. I couldn’t think of a better way to close the summer season than with you all. Enjoying good food, drinks and dancing together under the sun!
As always I’m looking enormously forward to play some music and to hear the selections of Charmaine, Kléo and Rahaan. Surely that will be a treat. And it so happens to be my birthday that weekend. No need for presents, just come and celebrate :)

Usually the day after throwing a party I wish I could do it all over again but then as a visitor. Never easy to completely let go. Still I really enjoy those in between moments on the dancefloor doing some steps and soaking up the vibe. It’s always gratifying to see everyone having a good time.
So please come and have some extra carefree fun for the both of us at the next Ciranda Outdoor. We have a great program once again - with Kléo, Charmaine and Rahaan - a nice space and yummy food by Alex in Wonderland

Four years ago we started trowing Ciranda parties at Noorderlicht and later found our second home at Doka. To be honest it’s not always easy, but at the same time it’s wonderful to bring people together and try to facilitate those moments ✨ (and blow up some big balloons)
We’ve been wanting to do a Ciranda Outdoor party for a long time and I’m overjoyed that we’ve put it together this year. With a line-up full of friends that I admire for their musical selections and an intimate dancefloor under the open sky, spending the day together. To me, that’s what it’s about.
I hope to see many of you there 🎈

Sunday we’re back at my favorite party in Amsterdam (though i might be slightly biased). It’s gonna be the last @ciranda.music in doka before the summer stop. I always have a bit of a double feeling in spring, cause I love being outdoors, playing and dancing in the sun. At the same time I think I’m more immersed in the music when i’m in an intimate club setting. It’s easier to really get in the zone and let loose 🙌 I hope you’ll join us this Sunday. We have @the_mighty_zaf coming over from London and I’m sure he’s gonna bring some incredible music for us. See you then!

Kléo b2b Mendel at Lofi

Looking forward to play another b2b session with my sister Kléo. We were very much in tune last time, let’s see if thats still the case :) Strong line-up as ever at Festifest 2023. Great to see a festival consistently following their taste with solid programming. There’s still some tickets available. See you on Saturday? I’m super excited to go to Leeds this Friday and play at Cosmic Slop, which is a fundraiser for the MAP Charity, a special place that I’ve been wanting to visit ever since I first heard of it. MAP is an alternative education program working with young people who are unable to access the mainstream school system. Where they teach music and other arts. While I’m there I’m giving a dj workshop as well as ‘testing’ their infamous soundsystem :) It’s been a long time since I last been to Leeds, so I hope to see many peoples at the party. A humble, sensitive DJ, Mendel has developed a strong musical vision over the years. His message is one of love.

Always on the look out for that heartfelt connection, Mendel doesn’t cater to the fist pumpers, but rather the loving, open-minded and upbeat. His sets are peppered with diverse influences, from Chicago’s (ware)house pioneers to Amsterdam’s soulful school of DJs. He carefully orchestrates dance floor experiences by selecting tunes based on the emotion they evoke. His selections aren’t bound by genre but rather encompass a broad spectrum of music, plucked from anytime in the last 50 years. His skill lies in bringing it all together in one energetic, danceable whole.

Born and raised in Amsterdam, Mendel started his career as a teenager playing hip hop in some of his home city’s finest clubs. A job at Waxwell Records broadened his musical horizon to include a wide range of soul, disco, afro, brazil and house. He became an accomplished editor, his edits championed by the likes of Antal and Hunee. He’s released on Disco Deviance, Basic Fingers and Lumberjacks in Hell.

A steady flow of mixtapes and Mendel’s Melodies, his regular show on Red Light Radio, provide a platform for Mendel to share his mellower side, capturing hearts by interweaving soulful classics with silky rarities from all corners of the musical landscape.
