Hagstone - Demo '24 (2024) | Hard rock

Listen here -> https://youtu.be/0mCtDhoHYEs

In recent years we've seen a resurgence of classic heavy metal, so why not reach further and go back to the days of hard rock? This was the assumption made by the Richmond, Virginia-based Hagstone members. Anyway, the musical DNA of this newly formed group is very diverse, from the classics of hard rock precisely, through NWOBHM or even anarcho-punk rock, and thus comes the D.I.Y. ethos of the band. However, we are absolutely not dealing here with retro one-to-one playing like in the past. It is, of course, hard rock: a wall of guitar riffs that are cool and catchy, a rumbling bass driving the songs forward, rock-solid drums and the mellow and melodic voice of singer and bassist Alisson, but played in the band's own way.

You can hear joy and pure enthusiasm coming from Hagstone's music. The band members themselves admit that they are surprised by the chemistry that has emerged in rehearsals. The musicians are already after their first gig, and they are playing another one soon.

We like debuts like this, we also like the fact that classic hard rock can be played fresh, on D.I.Y's principles, and we like it even more if the band ended their interview with the call “Free Palestine”!

If you like Thin Lizzy, Hawkwind, Judas Priest, Girlschool or AC/DC, and you want to listen to something in that vibe but without the misogyny, sexism or all the stardom and commercialism accompanying the dinosaurs of the 70s, then Hagstone's demo is perfect for that. The material, though short, accompanied me for a few days and I will certainly return to it again.

Looking forward to the full album and wish the band a lot of fun playing together and for you a lot of joy from listening to them!

Human Abyss - 'Death Obsessed' (Full album, 2024) | Blackened/melodic death

Listen here -> https://youtu.be/Ov9DDbW0FLk

Today we have a lot to cut through with the most recent addition to the channel: Berlin-based Human Abyss, and its newest album 'Death Obsessed'.

Although this quintet only goes back to 2020, it is almost entirely formed by experienced musicians who have played in bands like Spawn (death metal) or currently active No On Spoke (symphonic metal), among many other black metal acts. That gathered understanding of the several genres definitely shows on their musical output: a strong death metal base, with cutting edges black metal moments, and a subtle, at times, main conductor: melody.

Now, thematically, these lyrics hit you as hard as Gggolddd's 'This Shame Should Not Be Mine', Lingua Ignota's 'Caligula', or Ocean Of Ghost's 'I Am Awake And My Body Is On Fire'. What they all have in common is the systematic gender-based violence that rules our fu**ed up patriarchal society. In Human Abyss' case, exposing the abuse and horrors (personally experienced by the band's singer) an intersex person has to go through since they are newborn.

The widespread - and purposeful - ignorance about intersex people, leaves them helpless against a system that has them subjected as an anomaly and forces them to undergo continuous irreversible, and non-consensual mutilations, from very young, and highly invasive processes based on a "phallometer" so they can ensure a "normatively sexed body" that fits the binary scale. Those who are chosen by the doctors as females are 'legally' r*ped for years with different d***o sizes so they can be penetrable in the future. Fu***ng hard to digest, and this isn't the most exhaustive (nor extensive) summary of the most subtle type of violence they go through, which we know comes hand to hand with its explicit, daily, on your face, side.

Horror themes are most often found in death metal, although with a more edgy or macho-stinking POV, and so Human Abyss has effectively incorporated the terror, pain, and the whole circle of abuse intersex people go through, into the genre. With quite a clear inspiration from Swedish death metal, swinging from melody towards the old school sound, and incorporating very epic black metal passages. Bands like Cast The Stone or The Black Dahlia Murder might come to mind when hearing the 'dialoguesque' growls and shrieks displayed throughout the album. "Cut" has a third vocal addition by singer Britta Görtz, who was also in charge of the album's production doing an impeccable job that shows quite an improvement when listening to the previous releases.

A tough but very enjoyable record from what isn't just another death/blackened-death metal band, neither musically nor as for their message. Let their art serve as a catalyst for reflection, awareness, and action. Go, play 'Death Obsessed', and f**k gender very much!

⛓️ Breaking the chains of misogyny and of all the systems that oppress ⛓️

The other day we came across a design that brought together all the elements of a problem that has always existed in metal: misogyny. From the representation of graphic violence towards women (present especially in extreme metal) to the moral judgments against their sexuality. All this under the title of "death to groupies", or something along the lines, thus reproducing sexist stereotypes and perpetuating violence that women have to face throughout our lives.

"Groupie" is a term used for the sole purpose of stigmatization. It describes young women who followed rock bands on tour and, in some cases, established romantic relationships with the musicians. It only reflects a moral judgment on the behavior of these admirers. Society viewed with disdain these women who defied traditional gender roles and expressed their sexuality openly.
That, at best, they were mostly very young female fans used by older men who took advantage of their status as musicians. In either case, judgments are always passed against the woman. The fault is always ours.

A woman's intimate life does not define her. Nor does her worth depend on who she decides to sleep with or how she decides to live her sexuality or non-sexuality. Nor does self-respect depend on how a woman chooses to inhabit her body.
Rock often has an erotic or sexual charge. It is time for sexual freedom to be respected, not only for the old gentlemen, but for ALL*.

Inspired by this we made this design. Based on a Judas Priest illustration in which appears a woman chained woman. The hands of the original illustration are kept but changed of place and making an almost heart shape while she breaks those chains as a symbol of freedom. These chains are broken because women are free to desire and love freely. Not just women, but the whole LGBTIQ+ community. There's also a line from 'Jawbreaker', because nothing better for the occasion than a song about a jaw-breaking dick.

Sister, f**k with whoever you want.

We're all groupies.
We're all s***s.
We're all wh**es.

ΑΒΜΝ has been around for one year and a half of operations and we'd like to thank you all for your valuable support! It's time that we expanded our scope by launching a sister channel to ABMN and its name is Antifascist Steel! As you can imagine, this channel will cover the style of heavy metal and its closest counterparts like hard rock, progressive metal, doom metal, speed metal or anything-metal with clean vocals. We're made a point from the beginning of the channel to include music that is quite far from black metal, which is we'd like to believe consistent with one of the most important tenets of the genre, which is radical non-comformity, transformation and aversion to formalism.

However, we did notice from the beginning that we got very few submissions from bands that belong to the older and more traditional subgenres of metal, which is of course something to be expected, since the scenes of extreme metal and heavy metal don't always overlap (although we'd like to believe that they could do so more). So this is our calling for bands that belong in these genres of metal to join us together in an antifascist alliance, for despite the musical differences, the issues that all metalheads face are pretty much the same. We know that probably the first argument we'll get to hear is that "heavy metal never had a problem with fascism" but we beg to differ; although a separate scene like NSBM wasn't ever created in heavy metal, one can certainly find many examples of bands that flirted with fascism. In addition, issues as sexism, misogyny, homophobia and transphobia are as rampant in the heavy metal scene as they are in the extreme metal scenes and must be addressed with equal fervor.

We'd like to send a calling not only to bands, but also for people who are fans of these genres to join our new-founded team and contribute to the channel. We need you!

Send us a message to our email address (or instagram or facebook, whatever you prefer) and we'll come back to you!

Today we aren't celebrating Black Friday, or any other capitalist or colonizing holiday. Today we want to acknowledge violence against women.

A violence that is not only translated into murders, rapes, or physical and psychological aggressions and abuses that keep happening EVERY DAY in all corners of the world.

Violence is also living every day having to work twice as hard and to make twice as much effort, to be taken at least minimally seriously; to be worthy of raising your voice without being called hysterical, exaggerated, or extremist.

Violence is that medical research for women is based solely on perpetuating our role as incubators.

Violence is not being allowed to show your face, being told what to do with your body, forcing you to give birth, not being able to call yourself a woman because you don't have a womb, and not being allowed to choose your identity freely.

Violence is underaged forced marriages, child abuse, ge***al mutilation, and sexual exploitation.

Violence against women is deeply rooted and normalized in our society and we should be second-guessing every interaction, action, and reaction we have towards women until the day that patriarchy dies.

Work on it. Deconstruct yourself. Respect ALL women.

▪️ ▪️ Falls of Rauros - 'Key To A Vanishing Future', 2022

"…FALLS OF RAUROS seem to have wanted to recover some of the more somber and wild sounds of past albums like Vigilance Perennial or, in other words, something less luminous than the immediately previous Patterns in Mythology. The truth is that Key to a Vanishing Future stands out on its own and we shouldn’t necessarily be making comparisons.” by Angel Silva Photoshow

08/09/2022

MGLA is terrible news. All media should be aware of these facts before ever discussing them again. We are highly responsible for all the whitewashing they have been "blessed" with. And we must STOP.

Please, read the Antifascist Black Metal Network statement for more information regarding the band.

Mgla are on another European tour right now, passing from countries in Southern Europe among many reactions already, as expected because of the band's well-known fascist connections, which they've always refused to acknowledge. In Greece, many anti-racist organizations and pages have called out the band and the organizers have responded by threatening to sue everyone that is supposedly spreading lies about the band, although these connections have been public, well known and published by numerous sites for a long time now. Starting from the antisemitic song titles of main member M.'s Leichenhalle project such as Judenfrei ("free of Jews") and Jerusalem in Flames under the pseudonym of "Zyklon", to their longtime collaboration with Mikko Aspa (known n**i activist who maintains a shop selling n**i memorabilia, has performed in openly NSBM bands and even has pedophilic themed music projects) as a band signed to his label Northern Herigate, to M. and drummer Darkside performing as live members of his band Clandestine Blaze and their other band or personal associations with other nsbm acts. Even if the band never addressed these facts, supporters of the band and organizers are claiming that these were "things of the past", but it takes only a few minutes to see that these are complete lies and Mgla have always been and continue to have many nsbm associations to this day.

First of all, Mgla's latest album in 2019 is still on Northern Heritage, so perhaps nothing more should be said that when you buy Mgla's albums released in NH, you are literally funding a n**i and his operations. Still, we can immediately find more information on metal archives, like that M. as a sound engineer has been working with NSBM pioneers Graveland on their recent 2016 and 2021 albums (check screenshots on our Twitter thread) and has worked in the past with another openly n**i band Thunderbolt, with Infernal War in 2015 (of song titles like "Infernal SS", "Black Legions of SS", "Jewhammer" and association with polish RAC band Honor), of course also still working with Aspa's Clandestine Blaze with their latest album in 2021 and so on. So, it's quite obvious that any arguments about Mgla's disassociation with the NSBM scene are fantasies and lies. It does not need to be said that the "silent" supporters of fascism in the scene, which claim to have no political views as a band, are as dangerous as the open fascists and in fact, they set the ground and the platform for them to march on. So perhaps it's time we tell these kinds of bands to get the f**k out of our music and never come back.

Overthrust - Su***de Torment (Full EP, 2019) -> https://youtu.be/umaPZDjvdec

Closing this Oldies Sunday in style, we are honoured to finally have our first band from the African continent as the great OVERTHRUST pounds us a slab of crushing OSDM! "Su***de Torment", the 2019 EP from the Botswanan death metal cowboys, is titled in homage to late drummer Gakeitse Bothalentwa, who was hit by a car in 2018, and sounds a bit like what would happen if Bolt Thrower wanted to sound like Suffocation without going full-on brutal death - very heavy riffs, cavernous vocals, pounding bass, all in a measured, slow, and INCREDIBLY gravely production. We don't have the lyrics (and this being extreme metal it's not often easy to understand them from the singing), but the title track clearly repeats the line "You son of a bitch, you killed your brother" over and over and over; what could have been corny in the hands of a lesser band here sounds simultaneously menacing and sorrowful, and the surprisingly melodic guitars in this song make it the overall highlight in a short but sweet experience. Overthrust plays an important role in bringing attention to metal from Africa in general and Botswana in particular, and we hope to have them again on the ABMN!

Himura deathgrind - Causa y Reacción (Full album, 2021) -> https://youtu.be/uURHO0aLVz0

What is grindcore but fast and dirty noise? Himura gives us that in their 6 minute EP, Causa y Reacción. The EP starts out fast and stays at blistering speeds that you don’t know what hit you when it’s over. Like a semi speeding down a freeway, you won’t know it until it’s long gone. Besides what’s better for a nice relaxing Sunday evening than some wonderful Spanish grindcore?
