Most of the vocals we love are doubled, tripled or otherwise layered into a production-perfect sound... Especially with aggressive vocals and heavier music!
I wanted to give you a Behind The Scenes look at how the Pro's use production tricks to improve the sound of their vocals.
If you're feeling discouraged don't worry! This is is why your voice might not sound like studio recordings!

Singing my favorite Maynard James Keenan song
Singing all the parts for a section of my favorite A Perfect Circle song. Love the melody, the arrangement and, of course Maynard's performance. This song is harder to sing (well) that it seems!
Are you a fan of A Perfect Circle??

Good morning everyone! Keep singing and sharing, would love to hear your progress!
Here is a video for any of you who love LINKIN PARK!
Chester's vocal distortion is deceiving in several ways: It sounds like an extra 'push' but you actually get it by holding back. It seems very consistent and constant, but when you watch him live or study the studio recordings, its much more varied in tone and timbre than the produced studio vocals initially lead you to believe.
If you try and sing like Chester's distorted vocals without knowing where to begin, you'll likely just go harder and harder on your cords until they break up... But this will lead you to injury and frustration. I demonstrate how to do it correctly here and then in this video, you'll get a whole lesson on it:

Michael Jackson BLACK OR WHITE Original Studio Multitracks (Listening Session & Analysis)
Black Or White is one of the first Michael Jackson songs I really got into. I just love the contrasts in his voice in this song.
I was completely surprised and FLOORED to hear Michael go SO LOW in an improve towards the beginning of the song. I also couldn't believe how incredibly tonally diverse the gang vocals are.
The guitar parts are amazing too (shout out to Pierce Guitar )
This is one of Michael's best performances in my opinion and these multitracks expose some things I have NEVER heard in all my years of enjoying these songs. I'm glad you get to experience them along with me!
How To Sing With Better Breath Support (Cues From Aretha Franklin, Queen Of Soul)
How do you know if you're using proper breath support? How do you know what good singing support feels like?
Are you tired of feeling tired when you sing... Like you're having trouble finishing certain lines of a song? Do you lack the power you want out of your voice?
In this video, I offer three simple tips and exercises to test your current breath support and dial in how you can get more power and control out of your voice!
EVERY Rock Vocalist Should Practice Singing THIS
02/09/2022
Kate (K8) has been taking my courses and lessons for sometime now. We've been working on lots of aggressive vocal techniques and experimenting over a wide range of styles and artists. It was time to tackle the energy and challenges of M. Shadows and Avenged Sevenfold. With the help of three other pre-teen musicians (including my 9-year-old son, Gideon on drums) she's knocked it out of the park!
Kate does great in her lessons and works really hard, but there's one thing that sets her a part from the struggling 'stuck in beginnerville' vocalists: FEARLESSNESS
Even at just 9 years of age, she'll try anything, practice anything, and be fully immersed in the process of discovering what her voice can really do... WITHOUT the fear of sounding silly or 'looking stupid'.
She's the real deal not because she has some magic talent (although she is talented) but because she has the right MINDSETS that create a lasting environment for perpetual learning and self discovery!
May we ALL learn from Kate as we enjoy this rendition of Hail To The King!
Michael Jackson BAD Original Studio Multitracks (Listening Session & Analysis)
The nuances that become evident in Michael's vocals when you get to solo them out are just striking. He had such impeccable timing and consistency but intuitively knew when to be tastefully 'off' and vary his approach just enough to rope the listener in even more.
We are not aware of these subtleties when listening to the full mix. We just LOVE what we hear and feel connected to it. But when you get to isolate the individual parts and study the layers, you gain a whole new appreciation for WHY you love the song so much.
In BAD, we get to especially hear this in Michael's doubles on the verses and how the instrumental solos that were mixed and comp'd for the final mix were actually full takes! ...SO COOL!
There's always someone saying that practicing something will ruin your voice or injure you, or at least be bad for you. Don't listen to them. It's not about what you practice. It is about HOW you practice! If you want to learn how to sing a certain way, don't let fear keep you from your pursuit. Press in mindfully, carefully and with the long view in sight!
I look forward to supporting you every step of your musical journey to discovering your voice!

Kurt Cobain Does THIS For Great Tone... SO SIMPLE
Shoot me some love and give me a follow on TikTok! I would appreciate it!!
We tend to massively overthink what it means to 'get great tone' out of our voice. You'll know you're overthinking if you've ever asked these questions:
"How do I find the the best tone for my voice?"
"What kind of tone does song 'x' need?"
"I don't sound how I want to... What can I do to make my voice sound better?"
Kurt Cobain didn't over analyze... He EXPERIENCED his voice and passed that experience along to his listeners.

MUST USE Tips For Resting Your Voice!
Using range-filled dynamic speaking and intentional, built-in voice-saving activities are key to maintaining vocal health and longevity.
These are simple things to do, but difficult to remember as we go about our days. That's why I made this short... It's not new info, but a GREAT reminder for anyone who uses their voice a lot!
How to sing with more range! Check out this bite sized piece of technique on my new Tiktok Account!
Every singer wants a better range. Typically this means trying to sing higher. But what about singing lower... AND higher, more consistently while singing really hard songs all the way through!?!
Singers tend to get in ruts where they warm up their 'low voice' and then don't have a high voice. Or they warm up their high voice and the richness of their low voice disappears. UGH. It doesn't have to be this way.
Let me SHOW you how to stoke and maintain a full, accessible and HUGE range by unpacking how I learned... By listening to and singing a really hard Soundgarden song!
I look forward to supporting you every step of your musical journey to discovering your voice!

I get two questions about mixed voice all the time:
"What's an easy way to tell if I'm using mixed voice?" And...
"How can I make it sound better and more usable once I get there?"
In this video, I answer both of these questions in a direct way and give you practical things to practice so that you can actually use your mixed voice in real musical ways!
You must learn the 'sensation of mix' and then operate out of this sensation in order to use it regularly and musically. There are so many possibilities for your voice once you get over this hump of being able to hone in on the sensation. Let me help you!
There's always something we want to improve with our voices, right? Maybe it's tone... Maybe a better range... Less voice cracking...
It's easy to get caught up in what we want to change and lose sight of what singing is really about! It's about creating. It's about giving.
I'm not saying: "Just focus on the positive and all your problems will be solved!" ...Not at all. I've given hundreds of private lessons this last year alone and EVERY SINGLE ONE of my students I've worked with comes into their first lesson with this same issue.
And it's keeping them from actually fixing the problems they want to fix. The mind simply isn't in the right place.
Let me share with you two specific mindset shifts you can make, and a practical way to apply them with your voice so that you can, yes, instantly improve your voice. This isn't magic. It's about getting un-necessary and limiting approaches out of the way so that you use your voice like it's supposed to be used! https://youtu.be/sIe_imz7dXQ
Corey Taylor's un-matched distorted and 'screaming' vocals are heard in great detail when you're able to examine the studio isolated vocal tracks. It's also interesting to peel back the intricate layers that go into creating the vocal sound you hear on the full mix.
It's not as simple as it initially sounds. There's a lot of clean singing, some dialed-in audio distortion and other subtle production tricks that all work together to bring out the threatening, yet most enjoyable vocal sound of Corey Taylor.
Btw... Corey doesn't use your typical 'fry' or 'false cord' techniques. Corey has his own brand of distorted vocals. Let's figure out how he does it so we can try stuff with our own voices!
By going through these isolated tracks with me, you'll walk away with some practical things to try with your own voice and recording setup that will definitely level up your aggressive vocals and production! https://youtu.be/aDvYRcB5Zo8
It sure gets a lot of online hate!! As a vocalist, you're often looked down upon if anyone (even falsely) hears a hint of pitch correction: "That's not what REAL singers do!!" ... "That guy uses too much Auto-Tune. He's cheating!!" ..."She wouldn't be anyone without the help of pitch correction"...
Well, I'm not going to say what I think until we actually talk to THE PROS. No... Not the judges or trolls... Real, famous, working professional singers.
Join me for insights from Ronnie Radke, Spencer Sotelo and Lukas Magyar on the use of pitch correction. Keep an open mind (I will too :) )!! https://youtu.be/2CrM-OtmuEg
It's mind-blowing how forward thinking and influential Paul McCartney's vocals and songwriting have been.
And the production!!?! The way vocal effects are subtly brought in and out, the way Paul works the mic... The subtle sounds he makes 'off mic' during the performance... Just as relevant (if not more so) today than when it was recorded all those decades ago!
Join me for an in-depth analysis and breakdown of Paul McCartney's studio performance of Helter Skelter. (Using isolated vocal tracks!)
We'll geek out over his approach as well as how it was recorded and take away some true gems for our own creativity! https://youtu.be/WhfQ-6NanBY
Nerves: The most common and nagging roadblock. Period. Nerves and fear constantly hijack what could otherwise be an amazing vocal performance and experience!
I'll share some stories of how I have been able to consistently overcome nervousness, fear and self-consciousness. I also share two key tips that will help you fight off these negative demons before they overtake you! https://youtu.be/_tTcJSivzls
If you're not intentional, diving into Michael Jackson's style and sound can lead to instant discouragement.
Freedom, effortlessness and agility all combined with that signature sweet (good thin) timbre... It's impossible to replicate.
But if you don't go for replication and instead, try to understand his unique approach with your own voice in mind, you can unlock all sorts of amazing things about your voice!
For me, studying Michael reminds me to intentionally and dynamically place my voice... Rhythmically! So many subtle changes go by --usually un-noticed, as he percussively moves through a passage. He can light up a note with his signature grit and then pull back with unmatched finesse.
Join me in studying his isolated studio vocal performance of Dirty Diana... One of his more aggressive and agile songs! https://youtu.be/PKg64aQQbeY
Chester has an amazing way of being able to use just a few notes within a melody and create an unreal amount of dynamics. He's got a fantastic range, that's for sure... But his ability to be choir-boy clean and then rip your face off with the next phrase is one of the aspects that sets his vocals drastically apart.
Join me in remembering Chester Bennington as I unpack the vocal and production mastery of Linkin Park's Numb... Using the studio isolated vocal recordings!
It is only fitting to honor Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington within the same week. We miss you both!! https://youtu.be/OTQKBSDJbPc
Let's honor Chris Cornell on this day ...And pursue our greatest creative opportunities!
Remembering a true inspiration...
I've put together a video analyzing one of his greatest studio performances (in my opinion) and I've also created a playlist that includes all the videos that I've made that nod to or directly address Cornell's influence and mastery. Lots of cover songs, lessons and tributes here :)
To those that are able, I look forward your engagement with this video and playlist. I also look forward to hearing about how Cornell has inspired you in your musical journey!
LOUD LOVE,
Limited range is a problem EVERY vocalist struggles with at various points in their journey... But it doesn't have to be this way!
You struggle with a vocal range cap if:
-You are constantly lowering the key in songs you want to cover.
-You avoid writing melodies that cover lots of notes because you are tired of struggling.
-Your throat tenses up even as you're preparing to hit a higher 'problem note'.
-Your voice gets tired easily when singing in your upper chest resonance.
Lots more reasons...
Let me show you an extremely simple exercise that will help you break through that vocal range brick wall! Any vocalist can do this and get benefit from it, regardless of your voice type! https://youtu.be/5l6I51eN3s8
Maynard never ceases to amaze as he summons so many different characters within a single melody. He's channeling both sides as his humming turns into disturbing and inspiring screams.
Few songs demonstrate his diversity as well as A Perfect Circle's "The Outsider". Join me for an in-depth look and listen to the isolated vocal tracks. We'll talk singing, screaming and production.
AND... A huge bonus... I've added the 'missing' ending for the isolated vocal analysis on Tool's Vicarious to this video as well. ...So we can all get a sense of resolution by experiencing that climatic moment! https://youtu.be/qXAFNbR8l7U
