One minute past six o'clock - Premier Don Dunstan brought South Australia into the modern world 55 years ago.

From 1915 to 1967, pubs and bars in South Australia closed at 6pm - which led to a rush of drinks ordered before closing time.

A phenomenon ultimately dubbed as the “six o'clock swill”.

On Friday, 28 September 1967, Premier Don Dunstan marked the end of the six o'clock swill by raising a glass in the Challa Gardens Hotel.

Which happened again 50 years later with Premier Jay Weatherill.

🏖 Bondi Beach 27 July, 1901 — Dressed for winter in stockings, shoes, hats and coats the Allen children build sandcastles with their mother, Ethel, while the coachman, Jacob, waits in the horse-drawn cart. Jacob later traded his horses for a Fiat when Arthur Allen became one of the first Sydneysiders to embrace the motorcar. In the distance is the chimney from the North Bondi sewage outfall that had begun operating in 1889. From 1882 the State Government began to resume Bondi beach from private ownership after which roads, hotels, houses and schools were built. The Bondi sand dunes extended all the way to Rose Bay, with large areas of dunes still exposed into the 1930's.
