As you know, our 25 year story is about the hunt for the world’s first aerial hijacking at the hands of rogue Japanese agents which comes to a head on the exotic shores of Micronesia. Ours is a never before told true story to repatriate 15 Americans that spans nearly 85 years.
In this episode of Bored With Nelly, Steve Murphy talks about his new and exciting project surrounding the mysterious disappearance of a PAN-AM Plane in 1938. Uncovering its mystery could have massive implications about Japan’s first act of war against the United States.

As I sat with the team waiting for the rain to stop, or I should say waiting for the downpours to pass, I thought I would share a moment that brought me back to my days in Vietnam serving on a river patrol boat...
Once the equipment was loaded, the boat took off towards the island, plowing through choppy waters with ocean spray coming over the bow. As I was looking out over the mountainous jungle terrain with huts along the shore, the smell, sights, and sound of the boat engines transported me back in time, and I was 23 again. What a feeling from the past; it overwhelmed my senses.
The trip back in time continued as we all hu**ed along a muddy jungle road to reach our location, but rather than seeing bamboo hutches along the roadway inland, we passed cement houses with natives sitting out front in conversation, waiting for the Americans to pass by, so it seemed.
A much stronger emotion I had that was quite humbling was that as I looked out over the jungle mountain with palm trees and Japanese bunkers strategically positioned and dug into the hillside, I thought about the almost impossible mission our US Marines had to endure as they made their way up the mountain, through the jungle to take out those Japanese bunkers.

The entire Lost Clipper team would like to thank Zephrin Allen and Mike Holmberg as well as their search dogs, Kao and Aspen, for going above and beyond during our recent Expedition V. They were recently presented these plaques to thank them for finding a number of "hits" on location and samples that we retrieved for forensic studies.

Today marks the 80th Anniversary of the historic invasion of Normandy and the 75th Anniversary of the Berlin Airlift in Wiesbaden, Germany.
OXFORD, Connecticut — High above the muddy Hudson River, the D-Day Squadron had flown nearly 100 miles in tight formation to reach the towering spires of New York City.
Straight ahead, the mirror-blue One World Trade Center — Manhattan’s tallest building at 1,776 feet — rose majestically above a drab sea of skyscrapers.
Just beyond was the Statue of Liberty with its torch of freedom reaching toward the clouds.
The five World War II-era aircraft banked left to get a better look at Lady Liberty perched on its island pedestal in the New York Harbor just before the return flight to Connecticut.
Eighty years ago, the view from the squadron’s C-47 troop transport aircraft named “That’s All, Brother” looked much different as it flew into a world war raging 3,528 miles across the Atlantic Ocean.
The massive airborne operation took place in the pre-dawn hours of June 6, 1944, D-Day. That’s All, Brother was the first of hundreds of paratroop transport planes to deliver their human cargo over the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy, France.
At least 10,000 Allied soldiers (nearly 4,500 Americans) perished during the land, air, and sea invasion on D-Day and at least a quarter of these casualties were airborne troops. Germany’s losses were no less severe, with around 200,000 either killed or wounded.
The military operation marked the beginning of the end of the war in Europe.
Around 60 World War II veterans were honored today with a symbolic flight of these aircraft during ground ceremonies in Normandy on D-Day. (More...)

This is an excerpt from our Team Engineer, Jim Janicki, posted recently in THE AERO AERIAL (THE NEWSLETTER OF THE AERO AMATEUR RADIO CLUB) during our Expedition V voyage. Jim is, among several other significant talents, a ham radio operator and lead a 48-hour global initiative recognizing the 85th anniversary of the loss of the NC14714 Hawaii Clipper last summer. This letter, crafted by the Governor of Chuuk State, was instrumental in securing passage of Aspen and Kao, our two search dogs, along with their handlers, Mike and Zephrin.

In case you haven't heard - we changed history last week!
For the very first time - Expedition V identified the most likely location of the fifteen missing passengers and crew of the vanished Pan Am Airways Hawaii Clipper flying boat lost under extremely suspicious conditions. This has been a twenty-five-year-long effort by a committed team of volunteers and search dogs and it has paid off in many more ways than we could have imagined. Well done team!

THE LOST CLIPPER – We’re back in Micronesia, in Chuuk, for one last mission to try and locate 15 Americans who disappeared from the PanAm Hawaiian Clipper in 1938. Was their disappearance an accident, a plane crash, a skyjacking, an alien event, or an act of war? It’s hot, it’s humid, conditions are not optimal, this is a true challenge, but we have our dedicated team in-country and we’re moving forward. Keep us in your prayers and stay tuned, more to come!!!

Jim Janicki (call sign WB3FMS) has been busy receiving your inquiries via our amateur radio operation. We've talked with operators in Ontario Canada, Virgin Islands, the Azores, Poland, and others across the globe about our efforts. The Aero Amateur Radio Club that is hosting this event was first established at the Glenn L. Martin manufacturing plant where the Hawaii Clipper aircraft was built, and two transmitters for the event are established at the Essex Skypark Airport (W48) located in Essex, MD near the original location of the Martin manufacturing plant. The Special Event call sign is K1H and our QSL card will feature the aircraft and the location in Micronesia where the crew and passenger remains are believed to be located. The final radio transmission was made on July 29, 1938 at 0211 UTC and attempts to contact the aircraft 60 seconds later failed. The aircraft and crew vanished with no trace ever found. No distress call was sent even though the radio operator was in an active communication regarding a routine weather update.
