This year marks the 34th Annual Ostrich Festival in Chandler, AZ. Here's a picture from the 1993 broadcast, in which KZRX's G-STER did a live broadcast remote from the Ostrich Festival. Looks more like a KNIX event but we're told metal heads from around the valley attended the Arizona tradition.

The alternative metal group TYPE O NEGATIVE gained national radio airplay, after KZRX was the first to break their music. During a MTV broadcast from Phoenix, PETE STEELE lead singer of the group, gives Z-ROCK a shout out... notice his face after the response from the MTV interviewer...

Sad news today, as we learn of the death of Arizona radio legend JONATHAN L, who passed away at his home in Germany. Real name Jonathan Rosen, was one of the pioneers of Alternative rock radio, who launched KUKQ radio in 1989, after a successful run of his VIRGIN VINYL radio show. Rest in Peace....

Who remembers one of the biggest rock concert events in Arizona history? "ROCKFEST 93" KZRX presented this incredible event May 14th & 15th back in 1993. One day was dedicated to all metal bands, and the second day to emerging alternative rock groups. MADD MAXX HAMMER broadcasted live from the historic event. Compton Terrace had record attendance on the first day!

Here's an article from the Rock Radio Trade Magazine THE HARD REPORT, from February 1993. KZRX and Program Director "The G-Ster" were featured, after a huge ratings debut in the Phoenix market. He explains a bit of KZRX's success in the article, and moves to unseat rival KUPD.
