Samuel Ullman의 시 Youth는 그의 나이 78세 때에 공개되었다. 제2차 세계대전이 일본의 패망으로 끝난 후 전후 일본의 황폐한 정신과 무기력을 이 한 수의 시로 깨끗하게 극복하고, 일본은 전 일본 청년들에게 교과서에 소개하면서 일본인의 희망과 미래의 씨앗을 만든 계기가 된다. 카쿠는 그 시에서 청춘이란 16세의 젊은이건 80세의 노인이건 가슴 속 용기와 새로운 미지의 것에 대한 도전정신이 있고, 열정과 용기로 가득찬 마음의 자세가 '청춘'이지 나이로 구분 되지 않는 다는 점에 주목했다. 청년연단과 청춘 연단은 Youth Alchemy로 작명하고, 우리의 잘못된 상식과 고정관념을 다시 고쳐배우고 당당한 한 인간으로서 인생을 정면으로 맞서며 바람앞에 자유롭게 서는 것...그것이 80의 노인도 16세 보다 더 젊은 청춘이 되는 의미가 아닌가. - 카쿠생각
