I thought no home WiFi would = work disaster 😱but NO it’s been fantastic thanks to Claire & the team who came to the rescue 🙌 Sharing their office space has been an absolute joy. We’ve bounced around new ideas, swapped productivity tips and had a giggle. 😆 🎉

This hidden gem has such a spiritual atmosphere. During lunch I wandered through the tranquil grounds on the trails of the “Lost Gardens of Sevenoaks’ and felt transported to a different place and time.

I had a yummy halloumi wrap at The Woodlands Cafe (what a friendly lot they are!) made friends with the Alpacas 🦙 and had a new office buddy in the shape of cuddly Giorg 🐾 💕

A change of scene has been so refreshing! I hope my WiFi stays off for a little while longer 😉

How’s your first week back at work?

Toasting what was and what will be with a Champagne cocktail 🥂 This recipe is the one so elegantly sipped in the classic film, Casablanca. Everything else is for another day.

Christmas bliss is sipping a glass of mulled wine and reflecting on the many wonderful people I’ve met, interviewed, worked with and learnt from this year. I’m feeling so to be surrounded by some truly inspiring people.

Thank you all and have a very merry Christmas. 🎁

The decorations are up as the Christmas countdown begins in earnest today. With 130 million instagram users clicking on a link to shop every month, December will be a big one for small biz on Insta.

If you haven’t dabbled with advertising on Instagram, why not have a go at ‘boosting’ a post? It’s easy, inexpensive and will help your products reach more people. If you give it a go, let me know how it goes.

By the way, the wreath on our front door is care of my son, who made it at school. ❤️

Great to be at the British Red Cross HQ for the FIRST TIME yesterday 🙌 I was with with my wonderful work wife .hackneyroad to deliver media training to the inspiring London Emergency Response team - they’re the people who are there for you when crisis hits eg the Grenfell fire, the London Bridge & Fishmongers Hall terrorist attacks, flooding and most recently supporting families who were rapidly evacuated from Afghanistan.

Their big take aways from the day:

- Prepare three key messages to deliver.
- Practice using ‘bridging’ to deflect difficult questions and maintain control of the interview.

Such a great day
- thanks KTG! More training to come.

Where do you go to think or process the events of the day? One of my places is this river walk. Here, I feel like I’m able to absorb the energy of the water, as it rushes by on its way to The Thames.

Tell me where you go or what you do to create some space to think.

At a time when lived experience is central to news, blogs, podcasts and videos we need to know how to interview with compassion, care & respect. Trauma-aware interviewing and reporting has never been more important.

It’s something I practice, having learnt along the way, but I want to learn more about the best ways to give a voice to people, without causing more harm or upset.

My work means I often speak to refugees and asylum seekers, who courageously share their harrowing stories of upheaval, fear, pain and distress for use in the media. So today I’m joining a webinar called
‘Reporting Crisis With Compassion: A trauma-informed approach to supporting refugee storytellers’ as part of the One World Media Global Reporting Summit.

I’m looking forward to hearing how to do more to improve my interview techniques, making it a positive and empowering experience for contributors who have bravely agreed to tell their story.

Pinch punch first of the month. It’s feeling Autumnal and Halloween is almost upon us - one of the busiest times of the year for traffic on social media, so if you haven’t already, get cracking with planning your posts for the month.

The children are ahead of the game, having made these adorable knitted pumpkins, sold as part of a special event last night. Soo cute! 🎃

Check out these five basic mistakes to avoid if you’re promoting your small biz on social media.
Read on for more nitty-gritty or flick through the photo tips and see which (if any) apply to you socials 🤓

1. Ignoring the bio 😵
This is your chance to spell out who you are and what you do - A plum opportunity! Use every available character, scatter some emojis and add a click link to your website or shop.

2. Buying followers 😱
Don’t do it! It’s like inviting strangers to your party. And whilst it might seem like a tempting shortcut, it’s not going to hook you up with people who are genuinely interested in what you do. Take time to build your own community of loyal followers.

3. Posting infrequently. 😐
You might be thinking “I’m so busy”….”I don’t want to over-post ”….”I have nothing to say.” But the way the algorithms work means you need to be posting daily, if you can. Use a scheduling tool to help plan your posts.

4. Not engaging 😔
Be social on your socials and respond to comments. Show you care about your followers and enjoy having them around.

5. Writing irrelevant posts. 🥱
Always keep your posts on brand. The subject, text, tone and images should work for your business persona. Steer clear of random family photos and waffle unless there’s a nice connection you can make to your business.

This is Marzia. She used to be a Supreme Court Judge in Afghanistan and an activist for empowering women and girls. But she was forced to flee after two terrifying assassination attempts were made on her life, by the Taliban. I’ve had the honour of speaking to Marzia and other’s like her this week for .

They’re bravely telling their stories to the media to help others understand their experiences - experiences we have not had, and may never have.

Marzia is holding an award for five years of volunteering with the British Red Cross. She also works part-time as a case worker for her local MP and loves giving back to the community she lives in. Marzia lost everything but slowly, she is rebuilding her life.

Thanks to everyone who has shared their story with me this week.

From tending the wounded during WW1, to crucial first aid in a crisis and selfless front line experience of the pandemic - all incredible stories of volunteers in this month. Kindness in action.
Thanks for the coverage Sussex Life - it’s a riveting read.
