Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Ed Kuepper was born in Bremen, West Germany on this day in 1955 (December 20)

He was co-founder of the band who put out one of Australia’s most significant and groundbreaking albums, The Saints, then later the Laughing Clowns, and more recently The Aints!

Edmund Kuepper’s family migrated to Australia in the 1960s and settled in Brisbane, where he attended Oxley State High School and Corinda State High School with Chris Bailey and Ivor Hay.

The three later formed The Saints initially as a garage band, Kid Galahad and the Eternals, but had difficulty finding performance venues, so converted Bailey and Hay's share-house into a music venue, Club 76.

In 1976, the emerging band wanted to record their material but found zero interest from the Brisbane music industry.

So in September of that year they set up their own marketing company, Eternal Promotions and their own label, Fatal Records, and pressed 500 copies of their debut single, "(I'm) Stranded" co-written by Kuepper and Bailey.

The rest is rock history…

Whilst not wanting to align himself with the UK punk scene, Kuepper and The Saints were trailblazers in the rock world, and he has been one of the most important and influential musicians in the Australian alternative music scene since the mid-70s.

Speaking to The Guardian, Kuepper said:
“I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to sound like.
And Chris was just a natural as a singer. We were working on something that was, in my mind, completely unique.”

The Guardian suggested: “….this is quite clearly high-energy punk rock, before the fact.”

Over the decades, Kuepper has also recorded over a dozen albums as a solo artist using a variety of backing bands.

At the ARIA Music Awards of 1993 he won Best Independent Release for “Black Ticket Day” and won the same category in 1994 for “Serene Machine”.

In 2024, Ed Kuepper has been on fire performing with the reformed Saints ‘73-‘78…

Jakob Luke Dylan (born December 9, 1969) is an American singer-songwriter. He rose to fame as the lead vocalist, guitarist, and principal songwriter of the rock band the Wallflowers, which he formed in 1989.
Born in New York City to musician Bob Dylan and model Sara Lownds, Dylan began his musical career in various indie bands before creating the Wallflowers. As its frontman and lead vocalist, he wrote and performed the band's hit songs including "One Headlight", "6th Avenue Heartache", "The Difference" and "Three Marlenas"—the former of which was included on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Pop Songs", and won two Grammy Awards. With the Wallflowers, Dylan has released seven studio albums.
