The largest concert ever happened on July 28, 1973, in Watkins Glen New York featuring The Allman Brothers, The Band, and The Grateful Dead. The Dead brought the "Wall of Sound" system. When the size of the event grew from 150,000 to 600,000, they realized they needed more amplifiers and contacted McIntosh.

Several amplifiers were taken off the factory floor before even getting serial numbers. They were flown directly to the site via helicopter. You can buy one of those amplifiers today for $25,000.

This was also the first concert to use delay towers to provide better sound to people in the back. In 1973 200ms. of delay cost more than a new car!

Reverb is a marketplace bringing together a wide-spanning community to buy, sell, and discuss all things music gear.

These folks are recreating the most ambitious project in live sound, The Grateful Dead's Wall of Sound at half scale. It has separate amps and speakers for every instrument!

So, you hired someone to do sound… Part 2:

But, what does it really sound like?

Can you understand the words?
Lyrics are what turns a tune into a song. They are often what connects people emotionally with the music. But we go to many live music events where you can’t understand the words! Early PA systems only amplified the vocals. To get them over the loud sounds of drums and electric guitars. Now we’re running everything through the PA system and the vocals are often getting lost in the mix. Not good. Words are important!

When is it too loud?
Are people cupping hands over their mouths or ears? That’s a bad sign. People want to be close to the performers. Is your sound system pushing them away or drawing them in? Often the volume and tone of high treble instruments like electric guitars and cymbals make it hard to talk. Music can be loud, clear, and enjoyable all at the same time.

All about that bass.
Many shows have drum and bass instruments that are meant to be felt as well as heard. Those lower frequencies are also more difficult to reproduce and require more expensive equipment. It’s an area where a lot of “people that do sound” fall short. For a typical rock show, you should be feeling it, even having your clothes move a little on your body if you are up front. Look at the bass player and listen to what he’s playing. Can you follow the bass line? Are some notes louder than others?

Can you hear everything?
Each instrument and vocal should be in the mix and pleasing to the ear. The instruments and vocals should sound natural and appropriate for the genre and the song. Pay attention to how the audience is responding.

What did the performer(s) think?
Be there when they come off stage. Listen to what they are saying about their on-stage experience. If they are using stage monitors, ask them for their honest opinion of what it sounded like. This can be one of the most difficult parts of doing live sound. -The person mixing usually isn’t on stage to hear it. If they are using in-ear monitors (IEM) systems instead of speakers, most often they are mixing their own on-stage sound.

Is the sound crew nice?
Everyone should be having fun. A good competent crew helps make the talent feel at ease and ready to put on a great show. They may even have spare cords, batteries, and other commonly forgotten items to make sure the show goes on.
