STATEMENT REGARDING SOCIAL MEDIA THREAT
On Wednesday morning, October 26, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a report that a currently enrolled student at Smoky Mountain High School had made a threat against the school on social media. Law enforcement alerted the school and worked with district and school administrators to investigate the incident and ensure that there was no risk to student safety.

Officials quickly verified that the threat was not valid and no weapon was brought to Smoky Mountain High School. A call about the incident was made to parents by the school principal at 10:45 a.m. There was no interruption to the school schedule, and classes proceeded normally.

No additional information is available at this time. Questions about the incident should be directed to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Jackson County Public Schools takes threats to student safety very seriously and works closely with authorities to identify and prosecute individuals who are involved.

As part of the N.C. Department of Transportation Clean Sweep, the Jackson County Keep Our Mountains Clean and Green Litter Task Force will be holding their annual fall litter pick-up event during the weeks of Sept. 10-24.

To register a group for the litter pickup call Jackson County Department of Solid Waste Recycle/Reduction Coordinator Kim Shuler at 586-7509.

Information needed for registration includes the group leader’s name, contact information, the number of people in the group and the name of the road where the trash will be picked up.

Choose only secondary roads for litter pick up; the main highways of U.S. 23/74, N.C. 107 and U.S. 23/441 are not to be chosen due to high traffic volumes. The Jackson County Solid Waste Department will provide safety vests, gloves, trash tongs and trash bags, which are available at the Jackson County Transfer Station at 1172 Mineral Springs Road, Sylva.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in the clean-up.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to show community pride, civic responsibility and appreciation of the beauty of our mountains,” Shuler said.

There is a report of a pregnant woman (8 months along) being struck by lightning near the Savannah Fire Department. The person has been transported to the old station by personal vehicleto be checked out .

Please be careful and go indoors while these storms pass through and be careful about touching objects that are plugged in. This person was struck through an apliance indoors.
