“We urgently need to grow in our knowledge and love of the Scriptures and of the risen Lord, who continues to speak his word and to break bread in the community of believers,” Pope Francis said on the 1600th anniversary of the death of the patron saint of translators, Saint Jerome. And what better time to renew ourselves in this goal than as we start a new liturgical year—a year of Jubilee—and the holy season of Advent.

"Man is called to a fullness of life which far exceeds the dimensions of his earthly existence, because it consists in sharing the very life of God. The loftiness of this supernatural vocation reveals the greatness and the inestimable value of human life even in its temporal phase. Life in time, in fact, is the fundamental condition, the initial stage and an integral part of the entire unified process of human existence. It is a process which, unexpectedly and undeservedly, is enlightened by the promise and renewed by the gift of divine life, which will reach its full realization in eternity (cf. 1 Jn 3:1-2). At the same time, it is precisely this supernatural calling which highlights the relative character of each individual's earthly life. After all, life on earth is not an "ultimate" but a "penultimate" reality; even so, it remains a sacred reality entrusted to us, to be preserved with a sense of responsibility and brought to perfection in love and in the gift of ourselves to God and to our brothers and sisters."
—Saint John Paul II, EVANGELIUM VITAE

It is hard to avoid facing death up close and personally in this world, if we live enough and love enough. While our Faith provides the ultimate consolation—a promise of reunion beyond the veil, and a remaking of creation at the end of time—the physical absence of the beloved for the rest of our time in this valley of tears remains acutely painful, at least in this writer’s experience. But in the community of Faith, the Communion of Saints, and the continual presence of our Lord and his Blessed Mother, we have an accompaniment in our agonies that breaks through the isolation of grief.

Dear Friends of Magnificat,
Fourteen years after the launch of this edition of Magnificat, and thirteen since the new translation of the Roman Missal came into effect across the English-speaking world, more liturgical changes are on the horizon.

A little over half of us will be moving to a new Lectionary—a new translation of Scripture for our Mass readings—this coming Advent. The cycle of readings will remain the same, but instead of the Jerusalem Bible, those of us in England, Wales, and Scotland will now be hearing the English Standard Version (Catholic Edition) of the Bible with the Abbey Psalms and Canticles—an updated version of the previous Grail Psalms.
Going forward, this edition of Magnificat will therefore contain the reading texts for Mass as approved for liturgical use in England, Wales, and Scotland, though Prayer for Morning, Evening, and Night remain the same as before. Though it will not be feasible to support a separate full Jerusalem Bible edition at this time, those of you outside Britain will be transitioned to the very similar American edition of the magazine from next month [now the International English edition]. We hope you will stick with us for your daily prayer life companion regardless, as part of the worldwide Magnificat family.

NOTE the new BULK subscription for 10+ subscriptions! tell your RCIA class, chaplain, or prayer group.

Yours in the friendship of Christ,

Almighty ever-living God, who consecrated the first fruits of your Apostles by the blood of Saint James, grant, we pray, that your Church may be strengthened by his confession of faith and constantly sustained by his protection.

—From the Collect for the Feast of Saint James

Mary Magdalene followed Jesus faithfully in life and stood by him at his Death, sought him in the desolation of the tomb, and bore joyful witness to his Resurrection. She remains a lively icon of deep personal devotion to Christ the Saviour.

Saint Mary Magdalene, pray for us.

Happy Feast of Saint Thomas!
"God changed Thomas from a disbelieving and stubborn man into an apostle of the deepest and staunchest faith…. He came, although the doors were closed, because nothing can stand in the way of God’s power."
(—From Magnificat’s meditation for the day by Saint Lawrence of Brindisi)

Father in heaven, who still lead the Church through Saints Peter and Paul, bless each of us and especially our leaders, that, like those holy men we celebrate today, we might all value your perfect will above our own.

{Saints Peter and Paul, usually celebrated on 29th June, should have appeared in our pages transferred to Sunday 30th this year in England, Wales, and Scotland—our heartfelt apologies!}

When, in the womb of their mothers, John the Voice and Jesus the Word met, the women raised their own voices in praise. Elizabeth praised Mary and her child; Mary turned the joy of them both into a hymn of praise to God.

"Our triune God shares himself infinitely while remaining undiminished. That is the mystery of the Trinity. The desire of God, Father, Son, and Spirit, is to attract all mankind into his current of divine love, which is the source of all life."

—Bishop Erik Varden, from Magnificat’s 'Meditation of the Day' for this Trinity Sunday
