A quireboy, a sick guy and a bouquet of dead flowers

Whenever The Dead Daisies are in town this alone is a good reason for jollification. Why is that you might ask? Perhaps it is their propensity for puissant hard rock, the customized meat-and-potatoes strut and pound of the band, or simply John Corabi unselfishly offering the full benefit of his flamboyant hairdo. In any case, here is a reminder just how often, and how unjustifiably, we had been spared good old rocking recently.

Re-recording classic albums is quickly becoming part of the pattern for established acts. Ludicrous as this may sound to a mentally reasonably balanced music lover, Paradise Lost make sense of it all with a reworking of their iconic album. Gov't Mule are found scrabbling about in extended song interpretations, prolonged solos and medleys cherry-picking from various eons of rock antiquity, The Sisters of Mercy are all about moody, energetic joys, while Kings Crown administer a healthy dose of hard rock brilliance. There’s a postcard from the Corona Capital festival making things even more interesting, along with much welcomed bouts of insanity from S***m, John Zorn and Sadfields, among others.

Time for that crucial, life-enhancing dawdle through the latest edition of Rocktologist. Resilient as syphilis, Leo Lyons Musician is a known quantity, and with old buddy Joe Gooch in cahoots, they form a formidable pairing. Celebrated punk poet Patti Smith was caught ruminating on some deteriorating border crossing, her royal highness DORO is rummaging through a plethora of triumph and agony again, while Go Ahead And Die demonstrate some sort of a commitment to musical growth (exactly as the band name suggests). We drink a toast to Night Ranger who are wrestling their very own midlife crisis with a full piece orchestra, and cheer Mondo Generator’s taste for feral punka rolla. Add all these considerations together and they amount to a reason to crack a tinny and go nuts!
