Good morning, morning people and welcome back to the Friday edition of Stuck In The Vinyl Again's 12 Days Of Christmas Music Countdown. With just three days left we felt it a fine time to break out this album. Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer by Gene Autry.

Before the TV special, the album, or even the song, the real story of Rudolph starts in 1939 with a copy staff writer, named Robert May. Chicago based Montgomery Ward department store was looking for a promotional gimmick and May invented the underdog character which was loosely based on his own experiences. The company was hesitant about marketing a red nosed Reindeer, fearing that the public might perceive the outcast as an alcoholic, but took a chance and it paid off. The first year the store distributed nearly two and a half million promotional pieces and the following year in 1946, they circulated over 6 million brochures sharing the story of Rudolph. In 1949, May's brother in law, Johnny Marks wrote the song, but Autry initially declined to record it, but changed his mind after consulting with his Wife. The next year Autry took the instant classic to #1, making it the first number one of the 1950s. It is the second best selling Christmas single of all time, second only to Bing's "White Christmas".

The record has been released on different labels under different names and varying track listings. Our is the 1977 version on Mr. Pickwick Records.

Good morning Christmas record enthusiasts and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again's 12 Days Of Christmas Music Countdown. With the BIG day approaching quickly, we can't help to think of Christmases past. Maybe you gathered around a lit tree and sang carols with your loved ones or maybe you were allowed to open one gift on Christmas Eve, while sipping hot chocolate or making cookies for Santa. The next morning did you tear into your gifts frantically, or did you carefully open them and save the pretty wrapping paper ?

And that brings us to our selection today. Pretty Paper by Willie Nelson was released November 6, 1979 on Columbia Records and produced by Booker T. Jones, who also arranged the music and played keyboards. It was Willie's first Christmas record, overall 24th studio album, and his last record released in the 1970s . It peaked at #99 in Australia, #73 on the Billboard 200 and #11 on the Top Country Albums chart. On it we find Nelson delivering wonderful heartfelt renditions of all the seasonal classics you know and love rounded out by the LP's two original compositions, the title track and the instrumental, "Christmas Blues". Among the disc's personnel is bassist Chris Ethridge, best known for his work in the International Submarine Band and The Flying Burrito Brothers.

Good morning Wednesday warriors and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again's 12 Days Of Christmas Music Countdown. With just 5 more days to go we're feeling festive while listening to The Little Drummer Boy: A Christmas Festival by The Harry Simeone Chorale and with the Brass Choir and Orchestra. Our version was released in 1973 on Mistletoe Records. It's title track, originally called "Carol of the Drum" was written by composer, Katherine Kennicott Davis in 1941, and originally recorded in 1953, by the Austrian family singing group, The von Trapp Family (whose story is the basis for Rodgers and Hammerstein's Sound Of Music). In 1957, Jack Halloran recorded a new version for DOT Records but when the track wasn't released as a single, producer Henry Onorati left DOT to head up 20th Century Fox Records, and introduced the song to Harry Simeone who hired many of the same singers to appear on his version.

The songs tells the beloved tale of the poor boy drawn to the birth of Christ. With no gift to give to the infant King, the poor boy can only play his drum. Simoene's rendition reached #62 on the Adult Contemporary charts and #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles chart. The tune has been covered more than 150, including Justin Beiber, Ringo Star, Bob Seger, Joan Jett, and notably the 1977 duet by Bing Crosby and David Bowie.

Good morning gang and welcome to the return of Saturday's Singles, a 12 Days Of Christmas Music Countdown edition. First up under our needle is "The First Time The Christmas Story Was Told" by Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen and the John Cacavas Orchestra And Chorus. The record was released in 1967 on the Capitol label and produced by Arch Lustberg. It features the Illinois Republican, WWI Veteran, member of both the US House Of Representatives and the US Senate, giving the spoken word performances backed by an Orchestra and Chorus . Outside of his Service, he is best known for his spoken word album, Gallant Men, Stories Of The American Adventure Told By Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen. Our 'Christmas Collection' single is a Promotional Copy and features "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day" as it's B-side.

Our second selection is the instant classic, "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby. The song, written by Irving Berlin in 1942 for the film, Holiday Inn. That version was recorded with the John Scott Trotter Orchestra and the Ken Darby Singers. It spent 11 weeks at #1. The '42 master became damaged due to frequent use and in 1947, Crosby re-recorded the tune again with Trotter and the Darby Singers, as they were trying to recreate the original. This is the version most.heard today. In terms of physical media, it us the world's best selling single, estimated to have sold over 50 million copies. I believe ours is the 1980 MCA reissue with "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" on the flip side.

Good morning Wednesday warriors and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again. Today we are over the moon thrilled to wish Redford, Michigan native, guitarist, singer, songwriter, and political activist, Ted Nugent, ( Theodore Anthony Nugent) a very Happy 75th Birthday. Happy Birthday Uncle Ted ! He was born December 13, 1948 to parents Marion Dorothy (née Johnson) and Warren Henry Nugent and started his first band, The Amboy Dukes, in 1963, while still in high-school. After he dissolved the group, he embarked on a solo career that has yielded 16 studio albums, 8 live ones, 16 compilations, and 20 singles. Today we have him on his 4th record, Weekend Warriors. The LP was released November 1978 on the Epic label and produced by Lew Futterman, Cliff Davies and Tom Werman. It reached #44 in Australia, #24 on the Billboard 200, and #22 in Canada. Huhn would record three studio records and one live one before he was replaced in 1995 by the man he replaced, Derek St. Holmes.

In addition to The Motor City Madman's storied solo career he was also a part of the short lived super group, the Damn Yankees, featuring singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw of Styx, singer/bassist Jack Blades of Night Ranger , and drummer Michael Cartellone (Lynyrd Skynyrd).

Good Tuesday morning to you all and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again. Today we are thrilled to wish East Orange, New Jersey native, singer, actress, and television host, Dionne Warrick, a very Happy 83rd Birthday. Happy Birthday Dionne ! She was born December 12, 1940 to her Mom, Lee Drinkard, who was the manager of the Gospel group, the Drinkard Singers, and her Father, Mancel Warrick, a Pullman porter, chef, record promoter, and CPA. Dionne pursued music as a passion and got her start singing at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. After high-school she attended the Hartt College of Music in West Hartford, Connecticut and began landing work as a background vocal session musician and early on met Burt Bacharach and Hal David, with whom she enjoyed a long lasting collaboration and friendship.

During the course of her 7 decade career she has released 40 studio albums, 5 live ones, 25 compilations, and 96 singles, and 69 of those singles have charted on the Hot 100. Worldwide she has sold over 100 million records,
Which makes her the second-most charted female vocalist during the rock era (1955–2010), second only to Aretha Franklin.

Today we are spinning her sixth record, Here Where There Is Love. The LP was released December 4, 1966 on Scepter Records and was produced by the aforementioned Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It reached #39 in the UK, #18 on the Billboard 200, and #1 on the R&B Album charts.

Three singles were released ; "Trains and Boats and Planes"( #49 Hot R&B, #37 Adult Contemporary, #22 Hot 100, #18 Canada), "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" ( #36 Canada, #26 Hot 100, #24 Cash Box, #20 Hot R&B) and "Alfie" ( #15 Hot 100, Cash Box, #10 Canada, #5 Hot R&B Singles). (On a side note, I love the White Stripes' version of "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself").

We got our copy in a box of records that came from our mechanic, Art. My beautiful Wife Lynn, got a bargain on them and snagged some cool clown statuary as well, which is always welcome on our isle of misfit toys.

Great Monday morning gang and welcome back to Stuck In The Vinyl Again. Today our record of choice is the self titled debut and sole release from Annandale, Virginia based Bluegrass band, Wells Fargo. The back cover indicates the record was recorded at American Star Studios, May 1974, so I'm thinking a late '74 or early '75 release on the private pressed Brut Records. Someone has also written Feb 1975 on the back cover. I can find 4 copies on Ebay and none on Discogs. The four I did find range from $15 to $162, the latter being signed by five of the 6 bandmembers. On it we find a tight unit of musicians playing Bluegrass, country, and country rock like a well oiled machine. I found mention of the banjoist, Stafford Markham, as well as the mandolinist, Garland Alderman, and the fiddler, Smiley Hobbs, all seem to be well known in Bluegrass circles. I'd liken this album to something along the lines of the Osbourne Brothers being fronted by the ghost of Hank Williams. A truly enjoyable listen. I remember where we got it . There was a short lived little vinyl and antique shop called, Tammy's Treasure over off Cypress Gardens Rd in Winter Haven, right down from Harry's Old Place. The lady who ran the place (presumably Tammy) had it marked for $3, but let me have it for $2. When I googled the name in the shop, I came up with a mid '70s rock band from Zimbabwe and doubted this had anything to do with that, but sometimes the best spins are the ones you have no clue about.

Hello Sunday morning and greetings to all the faithful readers from Stuck In The Vinyl Again. Today we remember Shreveport, Louisiana native, country music producer, musician, and songwriter, Faron Young, on the 27th anniversary of his death. He was born February 25, 1932, the day before Johnny Cash was, and was the youngest of six children of Harlan and Doris Young. At a early age he took an interest in music but fashioned himself a pop singer but after seeing Hank Williams on the Louisiana Hayride, he changed over to h***y tonk country music. In 1951 he was discovered by Webb Pierce and ended up appearing on the program himself. The following year he signed to Capitol Records, where he recorded for the next ten years. During his 45 year career he released over 40 albums and nearly 100 singles, including 5 number ones. He also appeared in 4 films in the 50s, cementing his spot in the 'singing cowboy' genre. He was billed as Faron Young And His Country Deputies.

Today we have him on his 5th studio album, Hello Walls (Fan Club Favorites) . The LP was released in 1961 on the Capitol label and produced by Ken Nelson and Marvin Hughes. The title track, written by Willie Nelson peaked at #69 in Australia, #13 on the Easy Listening charts, #12 on the Hot 100, and #1 on Billboard's Hot C&W Sides. Two other tracks, "There's Not Any Like You Left" ( #21 Hot Country Songs)
"Forget the Past" ( #20 H.C.S.) were also released as singles.

Sadly, he took his own life, and shot himself on December 9, 1996, and died the following day. He was 64. He's said to have struggled with alcoholism, depression and deteriorating health. His ashes were spread over Old Hickory Lake outside of Nashville at Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash's home.
