West Chester Zine West Chester Zine What is a Zine? In the 20th Century, zines experienced a drastic increase in popularity with a greater accessibility to cheap photocopying.

Derived from the term “fanzine,” a zine is a self-published and self-circulated compendium of texts and works, typically collected on a specific topic. While origins of the zine can be correlated with the invention and subsequent spread of the printing press, British author Thomas Paine’s 1776 pro-revolution pamphlet, Common Sense, provides an example of one of the most famously produced zines to

date. As a result, the art form flourished with fanzines of science fiction short stories, punk zines on local music scenes, and riot grrrl zines detailing women’s personal stories and works. The West Chester Zine is a product of local writers, artists, photographers, and musicians here in the West Chester area. This issue of the WC Zine showcases works ranging from a retelling of rampant sexism to dreams drawn to life. This free Zine is made possible through advertisements of local businesses and the donations made to the Zine. We hope you enjoy this direct telling of West Chester culture. It was made for you. Enjoy,
