I’m the photographer in my family, which means I have incredible photos of my boys and my husband, heck, even the dog, but you know who isn’t in most of them? ME! So, any chance I get, whether it be when I travel with the family or when I’m traveling with girlfriends in Dublin (like in my reel!), I try to book a @flytographer photoshoot so that I know I will at least get a few decent photos of me from the trip.
Are they just in Dublin? NOPE! I’ve done photo sessions in Galway, Washington DC, and I’m looking at Turkiye, London, Greece and even at home in SoCal this summer. I so wish I’d done a shoot while in Cartagena, but if I can squeeze a photo session in while I’m in @discoverpuertotico next month you better believe I will… sweaty hair and all!

Not gonna lie- if I could sleep sitting up and block out all of the idiots around me (you know who you are), I’d sleep the entire way to Japan, Kazakhstan, Ireland, Australia, wherever!

Basically… I can’t keep up anymore. As much as I wish I could bounce, I’m just a tad slower and not willing to go up as many rocks, which is where you will find my boys on any hike. If there is a rock to climb, my kids are on it, especially my youngest. So, it’s not that I don’t WANT to take photos and show off my kids… I simple can’t get ahead of them to capture their faces and godforbid they stop to pose for mom.

I thrive off of other people’s energy. I loathe solo travel. Yes, I have to do it a lot for my job, but my experience is way different solo than if I had a friend or some family with me. This is not to knock on my solo travel women and men; it’s just not for me. That is who THEY are. It’s not that I can’t be alone (trust me, my kids can tell you how much I hide from them sometimes 😂), it’s truly how I enjoy travel and how to experience new things. This doesn’t diminish me or make me less of a feminist because I don’t want to do it. It just reinforces that… it’s OK to travel the way YOU want, what helps you experience a place in the best way possible, and that there is no “one size fits all” way to see the world.

I hate sitting at a restaurant alone
(what do I do while I wait?)
I hate hiking alone
(who can I shove in front of me if there is a bear?)

(who do I freak out to when I’m scared? Excited?)
I hate driving alone
(BORING!)

NEVER do it for the gram people. Learn from my mistakes! All I wanted was a little video of me on these awesome skishoe things in East Hokkaido, Japan so I could make a reel or something to show you (and show off my mad skills of course!)
So, like most times I try to look cool, I tripped over my own skis, fell, got my camera immersed in snow, phone wet, and it took WAY too long for me to get up since the snow was several feet deep.
Learn from me kids— it’s always better to do it for yourself and not the social media you hope to post. Ha!

WEIRD. WONDERFUL. WACKY.
Do you embrace it? I didn’t for a long (too long) time. But honestly, I’m getting too old to try to be something I’m not. Social media has messed with my head. I’ve worked in marketing. I see who’s getting hired. It’s not me. And you know what? That’s ok. It has to be ok. I have no control over some platform’s algorithm, or Google’s latest “Helpful Content Update.” So, time to embrace what I AM good at, what I can control, what I can do.
And more importantly, embrace what makes me who I am to the friends and family who love me just as I am, weird 🤪, wonderful 🤩, wacky 🥸 and all. Right?
