"The feature winner this time was truly something original. Horia Cucută and George Gänæaard’s is a low-budget, fully independently financed thriller disguised as a fake documentary investigating the suspicious death of an employee of an AI company. Made up mostly of talking heads, this is densely plotted, clever stuff, using its ‘limitations’ to the best effect. Such a fun genre surprise, and what a good choice of a winner."
"The film unfolds in a methodical fashion, shaping a narrative then upending it and building towards a more complex picture. The drama is in the writing and the constant drip of revelations."

A suspicious fire at an AI corporation fuels this inventive faux documentary which won Transilvania's Romanian Days

Armed with the TIFFTrophy for Romanian Days, Horia Cucută and George Gänæaard begin work on their second feature film, PAUZĂ ÎN PUBLICITATE.
The first step, a selection at New Draft by Asociatia Culturala Control N, along with 11 other promising projects.
"The number of applications was similar to previous years, 50 projects for 12 spots, but the selection process was much more complicated, being the most varied so far. The quality has increased, as has the experience. This is a fabulously good sign, and we are genuinely sorry that New Draft is just one event with only 12 spots. We are incredibly excited about the selected projects and the people behind them. We're getting to work and will share more details at the pitch in October."

🔥 A freelance journalist investigates a mysterious AI corporation after a fire claims the life of its star employee. As he races to uncover the truth, he unravels a web of secrets, exposing the AI software's dangerous impact on the world and on the sanity of its employees.
"The most pleasant surprise of all Romanian Days is the satisfyingly WTF proposal from George Gänæaard and Horia Cucută, Dismissed, a low-budget indie assembled as a fake investigative documentary, but with a plot so dense and winding that you cannot not imagine what a blockbuster could’ve come out of this story if the guys hadn’t just paid to make this movie out of their own pockets."

For all of you who'd like to watch KNOW THY PARTNER, written by Paul Weidknecht and briliantly acted by Ada Galeș and Alexandru Voicu, starting yesterday night, it's live on CINEPUB!
This year has been one hell of a ride! Working on many new projects and ideeas, lots of funding applications and winning our first one from the Romanian Cinema Centre (CNC) for our short film animated project, 𝑴𝑨𝑵𝑵𝑬𝑸𝑼𝑰𝑵.
But the most important accomplishment for us is shooting our first feature length film, 𝟱𝟯𝟰𝟴/𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯: 𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗔𝗧, which was only a crazy idea back in January.
We couldn't have done it alone... a looooot of people helped us along the way, and we are more that humbled that they believed in us and our project.
Big thanks to everybody! See you in 2024!

THE OTHER SIDE OF CURIOSITY was part of Dytiatko International Children's Media Festival during the weekend. That's a festival that generally takes place in Kharkiv, Ukraine. And that's where it also took place this year.
Let's write it once again, and let it sink.
Kharkiv, Ukraine!
It's beyond our understanding how these awesome people can keep organizing a film festival, with Russia's illegal, imoral and ilegitimate conquest war at their doorsteps.
Thank you so much for the selection, for your hard work and for being superhumans! 💛💙

We’re making movies that no one will see,
about things that mean the world to us,
at a certain moment in time and space,
but that mean less than a rat’s ass to anyone outside our bodies.
We never regret the echo in the large hall,
nor the words that OUR scarlett and OUR rhett say to each other
during the 126 minutes long director’s cut – their tears are ours, their love,
despair and hunger for life will be included in next month’s newsletter.
We’re making movies about those parts of our lives
that weren’t played out so well.
It’s our way of saying “sorry” or “thank you”.
We’re making movies that some don’t even call “movies” –
intimate quantum leaps, inner fights between our bodies and minds.
It hurts us, yeah.
We’re not (all) made of stone.
We, sometimes, get frustrated and don’t even know exactly why.
We wake up in the middle of the night,
running the entire dialogue list in our head,
sleepwalking through the entire movie,
screaming at our non-suspecting sleeping significant other
to be quiet and to get out of the frame,
“cause we’re fu***ng making a fu***ng movie here and every fu***ng second matters”.
We’re making (silent) movies
because we’re tired of all this noise, because
that’s the only way we can have some “Aaaaaction” in our lives
and some frames to be proud of.
We’re not making movies to prove that the world is wrong
nor that we possess the ultimate truth.
No.
We’re not making movies to prove that the world is beautiful
and that we know nothing and that that nothingness should tickle your funny filmic bone. No.
We’re making movies that make the entire world think
that there’s something wrong with us,
that we can’t relate to our surroundings in a healthy and normal way.
We’re making movies so WE can experience, in the most familiar way,
the new wave long shot convention that YOU all hate
and diss in the digital environment,
as if your lives were made out of fast cut blockbuster shots and not lonely,
long walks through a dull park.
Good for you, Max! You're not Mad!
We’re making movies because we don’t wanna have to explain ourselves, like I’m doing right now.
Reality sometimes needs its own subtitle and..
F**k! You know what?
The truth is that we’re not making movies.
We’re making moves!
