Back when I was in college at Eastern Mennonite University, my work study was at the campus radio station. 91.7 WEMC, we played classical music throughout the day. We would pop in the cd, press play, and either get some school work done or play on the computer as this was 1998 and the early years of the internet. At night, they allowed some students to host their own shows, and they were able to p
lay different genres of Christian music. Rock, contemporary, and choral were some of the choices that were available. There was a senior there during my first semester who had a show playing gospel music. I thought that was pretty kool. Since he was graduating, I asked and obtained permission to take over his show. I was so excited. And so it began! I renamed the show Heavenly Vibes, and it took place Monday night at 9:00pm. I continued to play gospel music, but I wanted a majority of the music to be Christian Rap. Being that it was 1998, there was slim pickings for me to choose from, well at least of good quality. I played the Gospel Gangstaz, dcTalk, and artist signed to Grapetree and Gotee records. I had so much fun with call ins, giveaways, and just being my self on air; there was just something about the medium of radio. I thought I wanted to be an actor, but after moving to L.A. and going on a few auditions, I quickly learned that acting was not for me. I never gave up my love for radio, but after getting married, having children, starting a business, and being a Mobil DJ, I just didn't have the time to start a full fledged radio career. But you can never say never. Being a mobile DJ, I have to play lots of different music. I grew up listening to hip-hop, but as I have gotten older, I have become disconnected from the art form today. I'm over the lack of lyrical skills, the same money over everything bravado, and the fact that I can't listen to it in the car with my kids. What is there to listen to? It dawned on me very late in the game, that I had all the tools to create my own show. I already have a stockpile of music, I have the equipment, and I have internet! So I have decided to bring back my old college show, where I will play Christian Hip-Hop, Rhythm and Praise, and other types of positive music. My plan is to have a mix show format for the music, while incorporating scripture, industry news, sports, nerdy things, and whatever else I feel will work. I want to have fun, and I hope others will enjoy as well. Mark 16:15 says "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." I'm no preacher, but I can use music to help spread the word of Jesus Christ. So sit back, relax, put your tray tables in the upright position and enjoy the ride!
