Years before Mel made her move to NYC, another ABG made that trek over.
Miss Janet packed up her bags and pursued a career in advertising after romanticizing the city for years. However, her experience was different, and her welcome to the city was not as warm. First, she got scammed for housing.😳 Second, she worked random jobs, from being a tour guide to working at a cupcake shop, as she tried to lock in a full-time job. People say NYC will challenge you like no other, and Janet was certainly challenged. After months of feeling unfulfilled, Janet moved back to sunny California.
This leads us to today’s episode where Janet and Mel chat about whether NYC is overly romanticized🤔, or if these big transitions in life need to come with a plan, or perhaps it’s all about timing? Listen to the NEW EPISODE 🎙️as they discuss their different experiences with moving to the Big Apple 🍎

Hello everyone! I’m Victoria, ABG’s podcast production coordinator. ☺️ The last few months have been a bit of a whirlwind, and the social team has so kindly offered me a space to share about my journey.
For the past 5 years, I’ve been working in the audio drama industry 🎙️ as a production manager & sound designer. It was honestly a dream come true - I graduated with a job that I loved, got to work with the best team, and felt professionally & creatively challenged. However, with a job you care deeply about, burnout can happen without you even realizing it. But I held it off, setting stronger boundaries and I fighting for more work-life balance. ❤️🩹 I loved it too much to let it go.
But you can’t stop the tide from rushing in. In January, I made the difficult decision to quit my job, and today marks my very last week. 🗓️🖊️ Closing this chapter of my life is very bittersweet, because like I said, it was a dream. But as friends and coworkers have reminded me, it’s okay if dreams need to change. In fact, achieving my “dream” so early just means I have so much further to go.
I don’t know what my next chapter will look like. But I’m giving myself time to 💤rest, 💭explore, and 🧘🏻♀️find myself again. One of the greatest recent joys has been getting into voice acting! I landed a lead role in upcoming audio drama called The Pit Below Paradise, releasing April 19. It was the first time I really got to pour into a character and carry her through a full storyline, and it was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. 🥹 So as scary as it was to quit my job, I’m very excited to see what the rest of the year has in store.

There’s a Chinese saying “老小“ (lǎo xiǎo) that when directly translated, means “old young” – when people grow older they become more like children. This encapsulates the youthful energy in “Nai Nai and Wai Po” which can even be seen in this joyful photo from the 2024 Oscars Nominees Luncheon 🥹 (Left: director Sean Wang, Wai Po Chang Li Hua, Nai Nai Yi Yan Fuei, producer Sam Davis)
When moved back to the Bay Area to be closer to his family during the pandemic in 2021, he started filming his nai nai (paternal) and wai po (maternal) grandmothers as a way to preserve their unexpected time together.
His grandparents grew up in poverty and experienced war in Taiwan for half their lives. “We were so poor we couldn’t afford eggs to eat. We were so poor, I fled with military troops to Vietnam for four years in an internment camp…I’m glad and thankful that our next generation can…have a stable and happy life.” (Chang, Wai Po, The Hollywood Reporter)
They hope that this film will encourage the older generation to continue seeking joy in the mundane and that younger generations will carve out time to get to know their grandparents. Although they are aging, they are “老小” (lǎo xiǎo) and also need love and care from others that young children seek🙏🏼❤️
The 17 minute film is headed to the Academy Awards next week,it’s been nominated for“Best Documentary Short Film”! It has also been picked up by & and is available for streaming📺

Our ever bubbly and thoughtful Melmel is welcoming a new year with BIG changes in store. She’s a dreamer and a doer (a combo that is hard to come by). The lens of fantasy she sees the world through is inspiring and her ability to put plans into action is another form of magic that ABG would be lost without. She’s a friend who can’t help but care and we’re going to miss her on the west coast (east coast, y’all are about to get real lucky)!

By now you’ve probably heard about the beautiful, emotionally resonate film, “Past Lives”. This film is Celine Song’s directorial film debut and has received 70 wins and over 200 nominations globally🏆🎬
It’s also nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at next month’s 96th Academy Awards (the Oscars)✨— we’re cheering the whole team on for these wins!
Celine’s talent as a director and writer is undeniable — she had her first dip into the pool of success playwriting for theater with her play “Endlings” (2019). Unfortunately the off-Broadway run was cut short due to COVID but was met with praise amongst critics and audiences. Her storytelling of Asian identity started strong with “Endlings” and as we’ve seen through “Past Lives”, has only continued to get better✍🏼 What did you resonate most with in “Past Lives”?💬

Icelandic-Chinese artist ’s brassy bossa nova tunes and deep-cut lyrics have taken the music world by storm the past few months. Her album “Bewitched” has been nominated for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album” at the 66th Grammys Awards (taking place on 2/4) and we are definitely rooting for her win!🏆
Laufey (pronounced lay-vay) has an extensive background in music – she started learning piano at 4, cello at 8 (our Asian mothers are quaking rn), and studied at the Reykjavik College of Music (Iceland) and Berklee College of Music (Boston)🎹🎶
In 2022, Laufey dazzled at a performance on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! in support of her first full-length album “Everything I Know About Love”, which also sold out tours in North America, Asia, and Australia, and was the most streamed jazz artist of the year on Spotify. Hi this is Ashley, ABG’s Social Media Coordinator here w another digital postcard from Taiwan! 🇹🇼 When I was younger, my parents told me if I quit Chinese school I’d grow up to regret it & I didn’t believe them. Well obviously they were right 😫 so for the past 2 months I’ve been taking Chinese language classes here in Taiwan. It’s been…very humbling! 😵💫🤧 I came into this program knowing nearly no Chinese characters but got placed in a low intermediate class & freaked out immediately since I couldn’t read a single word in our pinyin-less 400 page textbook 💀
The first couple of weeks I’d spend nearly 7 hours a day studying (on top of 3 hours of class) & felt myself slowly losing my mind & choosing to complain about it every chance I could. 😵 After ~3 weeks of this I took a moment to reframe my thoughts & dig through my personal expectations (and had several pep talks from my parents + friends). After learning to go easier on myself, literally setting a boundary of studying less hours each day, and figuring out a studying technique that worked best for me, class started feeling more enjoyable & I started consistently doing well on my tests + quizzes :,)
I’m reminding myself that every day I’m learning & I know more today than I did yesterday & that is already improvement and a lot to be proud of 🤓🥺

ultimately, the decision of when to announce a pregnancy is a personal one. “don’t share until after the first trimester” was something i constantly heard with my first, and i never understood why, until i had my own miscarriage. and while i was spared the need to shatter the excitement of a pregnancy with loved ones, i was left feeling alone, confused, and gutted. i’d never needed support and a community more than i had when i experienced one myself. so is it better.. not to have shared with anyone in the first trimester, other than my husband..? what’re your thoughts? while others may feel differently, in hindsight, the answer for me is now a definite no. all this to say - let’s stop telling people they have to wait until some predetermined date to share their pregnancy. let people decide when and if they want to share. and along the same lines, stop asking someone if they’re pregnant. and while we’re at it! stop touching bellies without asking too. k, that’s my psa for today.. thanks all. 🫂 ep274 | on YT and the @asianbossgirl podcast #asianbossgirl #podcast #miscarriage #miscarriageawareness
