I love love love when my kids, nieces and nephews ask me to make them stuff - it makes me so happy!! And they genuinely love the things I make - so when my daughter asked me to make her a birthday quilt this year, you know I jumped on the idea! She wants a kitty quilt for her bed, so I’ll be making this LuLee’s Garden quilt (pattern by the great @maychappell)in the twin size with the new @tulapink Tabby Road! I’m very excited for this one. It was so hard to pick out a pattern, but ultimately I went with this one because of the large squares centered in each block - perfect for fussy cutting all the kitties!!!! What are you working on? Feeling like a mad scientist over her using up as many of my scraps as I can from the Game Night Quilt I just finished. I looked at all my patterns and books to try and find a block that I could use for most of it, and I decided to make this star block! It’s from a pattern book from 1993, so I had to look up ways to make half square triangles the EASY way (instead of cutting over 500 triangles from a template 🤯) and hopefully I’ll be able to make enough for a full quilt! When I learned this trick, my bobbin issues almost disappeared!! You never want your bobbin running counter clockwise. Always check that it’s running clockwise!! If you’ve ever worked with vintage quilt tops, you will know there can be A LOT of problems, from smells and stains to unknown material. And I’m finding a lot of challenges with this vintage quilt top, no surprise! As I was ironing this bad boy to get it ready to load on my long arm, I started realizing it had some quirks. Lots of puckering, and wavy borders - polyester mixed with cotton. BUT I thought I’d experiment with this super high loft batting called “quilters dream puff” from @quiltersdream and it is aaaaaamazing! It’s filling in a lot of my problem areas, and it’s going to be so fluffy and warm! I thought I’d use this batting also because it’s dead stock, meaning none of my customers have wanted it, but I’m going to start recommending it! #quiltersdream #battgirls #longarmquilting #longarmquilter #longarmquiltingservices #quiltbatting #quiltersofinstagram #vintagequilt

Yep, I was trying to go fast on this gift and it backfired big time. I know, I know!!!! I know loading the minky where the stretch is going horizontal leads to major puckering. I’ve don’t it before. I thought I could make it work and now I have to rip out what I did and start over. So annoying!!!!!!! Just fyi, you should always load the minky where the stretch is going vertically, and the non stretch is going horizontally. This will keep the minky from sagging and causing rippling, tucking and utter mayhem on the back. Now to reset and redo. Ok, it was not exactly a full detox buttttt it felt good to pause the grind of posting every day.
