REMINDER - Due to the threat of dangerous storms and tornadoes this afternoon, be sure to stay vigilant and to stay informed of possible dangerous conditions in your area by tuning into the local media or the National Weather Service.

Peoria County Emergency Management announced today that the routine monthly outdoor warning siren test will be CANCELED for the month of April 2023. The test has also been canceled for Tazewell and Woodford Counties.

The test was originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 4, 2023. The cancellation is due to the forecast of possible severe weather in the area and to avoid any confusion during this event.

Any sirens heard on April 4, 2023 are a direct result of the severe weather – not a drill – and should be considered a legitimate warning. During these sirens, Peoria County reminds the public to stay indoors and move to a basement or bottom-floor room away from windows. Stay informed by tuning in to local media or the National Weather Service.

The monthly testing will resume in May, conditions permitting.

BEGINNING 3/30/23 - please be aware the signal originating from the Ottawa, IL transmission facility will be powered down - UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

This extended downtime is necessary to allow for the replacement of the antenna and for related tower work to be completed.

Those over-the-air viewers and cable/satellite providers receiving our transmitted signal originating from Peoria and downtown Chicago are NOT affected.

Illinois has a new smoke detector law taking effect Jan. 1, 2023. To clear up confusion about the new law and encourage the safety of our residents, the East Peoria Fire Department is offering the following information:

The State of Illinois passed Public Act 100-0200 in 2017 (which takes effect on January 1st, 2023) which requires all Illinois homes to have a smoke alarm with a sealed 10-year battery.

• Where does this apply? In any structure which contains a dwelling unit, including, but not limited to hotels, apartments, single family residences, and multi-family residences.

• What is wrong with my old battery powered detector? Over time, the components contained in detectors degrade making the detector less sensitive to detecting smoke. This places the resident at an increased risk of the detector not operating early enough or not operating at all.

• When does my detector need to be replaced? When it is 10 or more years old and/or when it fails to respond to operability test or it otherwise malfunctions. Look on the back of your smoke detector for the expiration date. This law also applies to any detectors that are newly installed.

• Are any detectors exempt from this requirement? Yes, any detector that is hardwired to a power source AND has an alternative back up power source such as a 9-volt battery or emergency generator.

It is important to note that if your home was built to the proper code on or after Jan. 1., 2011, the smoke alarms in your home meet the alternate back up power source requirements.

Also, we've been asked how to dispose of the old, expired smoke detectors. Although the replaceable 9-volt battery in the old detectors can be recycled, the actual smoke detector cannot be recycled. The smoke detector should be placed in the regular household garbage.
