I sent the 3rd edition of Exploring Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way to the printers yesterday.

Over the last few months Richard and I added 42 new pages covering interesting food and accommodation options along the route. We also added six pages on the Shannon Estuary Way. As well as updating all the existing text and adding some new photos.

Last weekend's visit to the island

There was plenty of coming and going as two of the lads were on a mission to explore one of the other islands. This required plenty of strategising with the tide.

Details of all the mobile saunas along the Wild Atlantic Way

It’s probably not surprise that with the recent covid-driven surge in popularity of sea swimming and the temperature of our seas that saunas have started to pop up near the popular swimming spots.

Unfortunately, this excellent route never made it into the second edition of Cycling in Ireland. My plan had been to include a significant number of gravel routes, however, shortly before I went to print I got cold feet and removed a number of them. The routes I removed crossed Coillte land and as, technically speaking cycling isn’t permitted on the Coillte estate outside designated areas, I was worried that there might be an issue with their inclusion.

This new review posted on Amazon UK sums up Exploring Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way pretty well I think.

If you have a copy and find it useful I would really appreciate it if you posted up a social media or reviewed it on Amazon.

In the last few months several similar books have appeared, and the ones I have seen are a load of sh*te, so spreading the word will help people make a good choice.

Dave Ayton on Air Time E5 6a in Póirse Gully in the Gap of Dunloe, Kerry. Possibly Ireland's most underrated climbing area. The rock is absolutely immaculate, beautiful clean sandstone with great friction and plenty of holds and generally good gear as well. This shot is from 2014 during one of the Gap climbing meets.

For the next few days I will be sharing some photos from Cycling in Ireland. This first post show the view that was on the front cover of the first edition. Before I even got there I knew that I was going to use that view for the cover. The first photo was taken when I was out doing the cycle, the light wasn't great, but I knew that the composition would work so the next day I came back and got the shot that I used on the cover.

I have a big print of it on my kitchen wall and I'm really happy with it. Love that there I so much going on in it. The only thing I'd change is the way the outcrop cuts across the road a little in foreground.

Descending the Skelp, a rocky pass over the Eastern shoulder of Croagh Patrick in County Mayo. This very rough track forms the highpoint of a 16km gravel route that does a circuit around Owenwee Bog following a series of bog tracks, boreens and mountain tracks.
