Reimagine Music releases 6th Instalment In Their Tributes To Iconic Figures: Tease Torment and Tantalize: A Tribute To The Smiths’ Debut

Punk, new wave, post-punk, alternative. As the 1970s turned into the 1980s, there was a huge surge of rock music activity that has laid the foundation for the m

odern day rock movement. The group introduced an alternative style of music that unmistakably showcases rock sophistication both rhythmically compelling and memorably melodic. Due to the Smiths distinct individualism, their sound triggered a personal appeal that spoke about situations and emotions rooted in everyday life. To that, the weary nostalgia of Morrissey’s lyrics and the crisp, cascading riffs of guitarist, Johnny Marr effectively set the tone for new wave music that has left an everlasting mark in musical style and attitude, crossing the generational divide to appeal to today’s youth and musicians. Recorded in 2014, the 30th anniversary of The Smiths’ eponymous debut, this new compilation features a select few of the best recording artists in indie rock. The Smiths enduring mark and the streak of determined independence, in style and attitude, persists in this unique reimagining by Kevin Devine, Blackbird Blackbird, Faded Paper Figures, Mother Falcon, Field Mouse, Jaymay, Brothertiger, Seapony, Male Bonding, The Night VI, Soft Metals, Young Statues, Heidemann, and Our Broken Garden. Producer Jim Sampas of the album says, “Thanks to the blood, sweat, and tears of the most talented artists on the scene today, this project possesses a sonic cohesion, more like an album by one band rather than a compilation. Approaching the source material was no easy task. Morrissey challenged his listeners with deeply personal, uninhibited lyrics of shadowy sexuality, excitements, and remorse. As collaborators, Johnny Marr and Morrissey of The Smiths were not interested in being trendy. Although these guys simply set out to make great, timeless art, avoiding the blaring guitars and biting ‘tear the house down’ lyrics of the day; instead, they augmented their lyrics with distinctive, elliptical guitar phrases that seem to emanate from the ether.”

“But get ready. These new renderings demonstrate the sublime song writing of the Marr-Morrisey collaboration, yet the artists involved in this project do more than merely pay homage. While some alight on the flames of the original song craft to great effect, others take the material in a nuanced direction, fanning the fires of a masterpiece. Through it all, there is a sense of the original light, a radiance able to support a multitude of interpretations." About Jim Sampas

The Los Angeles Times recently described Sampas as “the thinking person’s producer,” known for critically acclaimed work that honors other icons such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles. He is the innovator and creative powerhouse behind three projects based on the last great novel by another legend, Jack Kerouac: the Billboard Heatseeker #1 album, Jay Farrar and Benjamin Gibbard's One Fast Move, Kerouac’s Big Sur; the documentary film of the same name featuring Tom Waits, Sam Shepard, and Patti Smith; and the recent Official Sundance Film Festival Selection feature film Big Sur, starring Jean-Marc Barr, Kate Bosworth, Josh Lucas, and Rhadha Mitchell, with a score composed by Aaron and Bryse Dessner of The National.
