Speaking at a Catholic university in Hungary on Sunday, Pope Francis warned of the risk of technological domination and the threat it poses to culture and to our human ecology.

He also spoke about the false freedoms offered by both communism and consumerism, and encouraged people to seek out Christ’s truth.

On April 30 the pope addressed approximately 250 people, including 30 students, from the Faculty of Information Technology and Bionics at the Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest.

The visit marked the final meeting in Francis’ three-day trip to Hungary’s capital.

Pope Francis also warned of the “false notion of freedom” offered by the ideologies of communism and consumerism

A coalition that seeks to protect the Verde Island Passage (VIP) is calling for accountability and deeper look into the oil spill that wreaked havoc in the waters of Oriental Mindoro.

The Protect VIP campaign network said the incident must serve as an “eye opener” to the neglect the Verde Island Passage has long suffered despite its socioeconomic and ecological significance.

VIP is a strait that separates the islands of Luzon and Mindoro, connecting the South China Sea with the Tayabas and the Sibuyan Sea beyond.

Filipino Catholics are getting ready for another religious festival this week with the blessing of replicas of the image of the “Black Nazarene” on Dec. 27, 2022. The “Black Nazarene” is a life-sized image of a dark-skinned, kneeling Jesus Christ carrying the Cross enshrined in the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Manila’s Quiapo district. The icon is renowned in the Philippines and is considered by many Filipino Catholics to be miraculous; its mere touch is reputed to cure illness. It attracts homage from numerous devotees, who bear it in mass processions during the annual reenactment of its transfer (traslacion) every 9th of January. (Photos by Angie de Silva)
