An editorial addressing the 2024 Farm Bill draft by Barb Kalbach, board president of Iowa CCI and a fourth-generation family farmer from Adair County, Iowa.

'You know who [the Farm Bill] is a big win for? It’s a win for CEOs that have never worked in a field for a day in their lives. It’s a win for people with luxury beachfront properties and fancy high-rise apartments who make their money screwing over our family farmers.'

After months of delay, the Farm Bill is finally moving in Congress. The House Agriculture Committee passed its draft of the 2024 Farm Bill on May 23, the first step in a process that will include a Senate draft followed by floor debates later this year. Buckle up. We’ve got a long way to go […]

This week's Dengler Domain takes a look at the privilege many Iowans enjoy of living and thriving in rural areas & how important it is to make sure ALL Iowans have the same opportunity to experience the wonder and beauty that is the Iowa landscape.

This is where subjectivity comes in, but there is one picture perfect setting. It is often taken for granted. This is the Iowa landscape. Living in town ...

Bobby & Sara Torres, co-owners of Bobby's Grocery and BBQ for the last four years, recently put out an urgent plea to the community for help in keeping Dysart's lone independent grocery store from shuttering its doors. From multiple weather disasters to record inflation to broken down equipment, myriad challenges have contributed to the small business's predicament, but one stands above the rest - a dollar store entering the market.

"We can’t compete with Dollar General,” Bobby said bluntly when asked how long the store has been facing financial difficulty. “They were supposed to help us. Having a Dollar General here was supposed to help keep people in town. But now, we’re down $40,000 a month in revenue since they’ve been open. It’s gradually getting worse.”

Click the link⤵️ below to learn more including how you can help the Torres family keep the doors to Bobby's open now & into the future. The story also includes comments from Mayor Tim Glenn on Dollar General coming to town as well as details on what Bobby & Sara plan to do with the $75K their online fundraiser is requesting.

But perhaps most importantly, after reading the story, stop by the grocery TODAY because in the long run, there's really only one solution to saving Bobby's...

“The best way to support us is to shop here.”

Our top story this week is a lengthy summary of all the contested Tama County primary races that played out on Tuesday's ballot. Scroll for the link (same link as what was posted along with all the individual races we highlighted further down in our feed).

Many of the photos in the print version feature primary voter Allan Ameling of Traer & his granddaughter, two-year-old Adeline. Miss Addie did such a good job Tuesday afternoon as her grandpa's sidekick, waiting so very patiently for him to finish his ballot. Sixteen years from now, hopefully she remembers (or, more likely, recalls hearing the story) & exercises her own right to vote!

Way to go, Grandpa Allan!
