New Thrift Shopping Opportunity at MVNU

Thrift shopping is taking a whole new form through the Clothing Swap at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. The term sounds complex, but the idea is quite simple. On Oct.12, 13 and 18, MVNU’s Enactus invited students and staff to drop off their unworn or unwanted clothes, and in exchange they received tickets based on their donation. Then, on Oct. 19 and 20, students and staff can visit the Barn and purchase new items with their tickets. Additionally, tickets are available for purchase at the door for those who did not donate but would still like to shop at the Clothing Swap.

When discussing the original idea behind the Clothing Swap, Abi Larkin, Enactus student leader, mentioned that the idea was actually introduced by two MVNU staff, Sarah Scott and Stephanie Gribble. She explained that the two women wished they could trade clothes with others because their taste had changed, or they simply outgrew the items. “This gave them an idea about how a lot of students on campus would benefit from this as well, so they introduced the idea of a clothing swap to Enactus,” Larkin stated. From there, Enactus turned the idea into a campus-wide event.

Though the Clothing Swap is a fun, new method of thrift shopping, Larkin also hopes the event will leave a lasting impact on the MVNU community. Ideally, she desires for students to find clothes they need at an affordable price and to bring the community together. “All in all, we want to bring everyone together and give them affordable clothing options to update their closet for the season,” Larkin expressed. “We also hope that this will minimize textile waste by having students and staff members give their clothes back rather than throwing them away.”
