Ukraine - The Latest (Day 810)

A moving discussion with Colin Freeman who talked with conscripts being trained before heading to the front line.

A soldier shares stoic words until he is asked about how his wife and 2 children have handled him being drafted. Then he opens up, and it is difficult to hold back tears.

Colin Freeman said that as a journalist, he has spent a lot of time in airports and train stations seeing loved ones re-unite and hug, but he's never seen anything like how soldiers and their loved ones embrace at Kramatorsk Station in the war-torn Donbas.

Support Ukraine because by doing so, you are increasing the chances that these men and women will return alive to their loved ones. Support Ukraine because citizens trapped behind enemy lines face two choices - become Russian, or wait for Russia to be forced to withdraw. Are you happy you're a NZ citizen? Good we're far from danger, isn't it?

Tom Cooper is an author and specialist in air warfare who speaks several languages. In support of Ukraine, he covers the war from a 'close up' point of view through his contacts in the field.

A special request from Tom (and me). Ukraine's 3rd Special Purposes Regiment (SSO) is fundraising for a "Shark" reconnaissance UAV. This aircraft is used to collect information about the battlefield. It would greatly assist the 3rd SSO in their role defending Ukraine against Russia's aggression.

Tom usually doesn't run fundraisers, but has made an exception this time because he knows how effective this UAV would be!

If you support Ukraine's defense of its territory and sovereignty, please consider making a donation, and also sharing about this fundraiser. No amount is 'too small' ... it all adds up, as shown time and again in many fundraisers.

New Zealand donors - I have found Paypal the most painless method - if using Paypal, scroll down for account name and leave a comment "for Shark UAV"

Hello everybody! ‘Few months ago’, I’ve been approached with a… very specific, and very special request for help. Essentially, the 3rd Special Purpose Regiment of the SSU - one of special forces units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces - is trying to get a Shark reconnaissance UAV….

This week in Ukraine - S2 E1. A great interview.

Some industries are languishing from the war; others are booming.

But the time to start investing in Ukraine is now - to provide job opportunities for Ukrainians abroad to return to. War insurance helps out with this.

How individuals can invest is discussed in the Community Question at the end of the podcast.

"This Week in Ukraine” is The Kyiv Independent’s video podcast hosted by Masha Lavrova. Every week, Masha sits down with her newsroom colleagues to discuss U...

Tenby Powell, former mayor of Tauranga, supports Ukraine through the Kiwi K.A.R.E. foundation. He answers the question he's often asked: "what's it like?" And no, this doesn't mean the war, people ask him what Ukraine and its people are like. A good read:

Opinion: Tenby Powell is back after setting up a relief effort in Ukraine.

Ukraine - The Latest - Day 650

Francis Dearnley speaks of the West possibly needing to be woken from its stupor by Ukraine being pushed back.

If Ukraine begins to be pushed back, the West would be significantly on the back foot, because the war is at the industrial phase. The momentum of Russia's war machine would be significant at that point.

Like in WWII, the Axis really lost when the Allies' war machine began to out-perform theirs - which was in advance of progress in the war theatres, broadly speaking.

Betting on Russia's war machine falling apart under the pressure is risky, as history teaches us that Russia can overcome the greatest challenges and hardships when it needs to.

Day 650.Today, we bring you the latest news from Ukraine, discuss Poland’s warning that Nato has 3 years to prepare for a Russian attack & we’re on the groun...

Kyiv Independent - This Week in Ukraine.

A sobering interview with Francis Farrell about the current state of the conflict and the West's lack of commitment. Not easy to listen to, but needed to be said.

Ukraine - The Latest (Day 640)

Dom Nicholls quotes Gen. Sir Richard Barrons from his speech at the Lucerne Dialogue. Speaking of weapons stock, he says: "there's nothing left on their [Ukraine's] shelf. There's nothing left on our [UK/EU] shelf. We've given all the stuff that we've kept in store. The only way Ukraine wins is if we now mobilize our industry and our will behind that. And do not tell me it's unaffordable, because you represent an economy of 15 trillion euros a year. ... This is not about affordability; this is about choice and competence."

This is the sobering reality of where the conflict now stands. Will democratic nations around the world, (including New Zealand) be proactive, or react to a worsening situation for Ukraine too late and at much greater cost?

Day 640.Today, we bring you the latest news from the frontlines and discuss the implications of the dreadful winter storm sweeping across Southern Ukraine, o...
