June 21 - World War Z opens across the U.S. in 2013. Based on Max Brooks’ book and starring Brad Pitt, it is the largest scale zombie movie to date. Despite a troubled production, the film is a hit and the highest grossing zombie film in history. A potential sequel, also having a troubled pre-production, was canceled in 2017.
June 20 - Jaws opens across the U.S. in 1975. Steven Spielberg’s first major film, based on author Peter Benchley’s bestselling book, becomes a massive hit. The film also inspires multiple sequels and a legion of rip-offs featuring orcas, crocodiles, and piranhas. The film is 48th on the American Film Institute’s 100 Greatest American Movies.

June 19 - Them! opens across the U.S. in 1954. Directed by Gordon Douglas and starring James Whitmore, James Arness, Fess Parker and Edmund Gwynn, and is one of the nuclear monster movies of the 1950s. The film is nominated for an Oscar for special effects and still considered one of the 1950s best sci-fi films.
June 18 - House of Usher premieres in Palm Springs, Calif. in 1960. The first of director Roger Corman’s eight Edgar Allan Poe-based films, features a screenplay by Richard Matheson, stars Vincent Price and is shot in just 15 days. The film was included for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2005.
June 17 - Wolf opens across the U.S. in 1994. Mike Nichols directed the romantic horror film starring Jack Nicholson, Michele Pfeiffer and James Spader. A re-shot ending helps make the werewolf film a success after bad test screenings. Ennio Morricone wins a grammy for his score.
June 16 - Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho premieres at the DeMille Theater, a former burlesque house, NYC in 1960. The horror classic was controversial for years, but is currently 18th on the American Film Institute’s 100 Greatest American Movies list.
June 15 - The Hills Have Eyes premieres in Tucson, AZ in 1977. Wes Craven’s low budget cannibal film stars Dee Wallace and Michael Berryman. The film is a hit and spawns two sequels and a reboot series. It is considered a cult classic
June 14 - Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter opens across the U.S. in 1974. The self-explanatory Hammer horror film is a critical and box office success and intended to be the first of a series of swashbuckling horror films, but financial problems at Hammer shut it down. The film nevertheless gains a cult following.
June 13 - The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms opens across the U.S. in 1953. Inspired by a Ray Bradbury short story, it is one of the first, and one of the best atomic monster films and features the early stop-motion animation work of Ray Harryhausen. The film is said to be partly inspiration for Godzilla 16 months later.
June 12 - The Witches of Eastwick opens across the U.S. in 1987. George Miller’s dark comedy based on John Updike’ novel features a cast of Cher, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jack Nicholson as the devil. The film is a critical and box office hit and wins BAFTA, Saturn, and LA and New York film critics’ awards.
June 11 - Society opens across the U.S. in 1992. The surreal and provocative body horror film is a success in Europe three years earlier, but the gory dark satire flops in the states. It remains a cult film.
June 10 - The Lodger: A Story of The London Fog premieres in New York City in 1928. The Alfred Hitchcock take on the Jack The Ripper story is a hit. The film is considered the first true Hitchcock film and the director’s best silent film.
June 9 - The Face of Another opens across the U.S. in 1966. The Japanese New Wave thriller about a disfigured man getting a new face is flop on its release, but has since grown in stature.
June 8 - Ghostbusters opens across the U.S. in 1984. The horror comedy classic stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, and Rick Moranis and is written by Ackroyd and co-star Harold Ramis. A huge summer hit, the success leads to multiple sequels, spinoffs and an animated TV show. The film is on more than a dozen “best” lists including the American Film Institute’s “100 Laughs” top American comedies of the 20th Century, and the BBC’s top 100 film comedy list. In 2015, it was included in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry.
June 7 - The Shadow of the Cat opens across the U.S. in 1961. The Hammer horror film features a cat bent on revenge after witnessing her owner’s murder. It is released as a double feature with Hammer’s Curse of the Werewolf.

June 6 - Actor Robert Englund is born in Glendale, California in 1947. The classically trained actor’s career includes stage, film and TV but he is best known for playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. He is one of only three actors — along with Doug Bradley and Tobin Bell — to play a horror character for eight consecutive films.
June 5 - Gog premieres in Hollywood in 1954. One of the string of 3D films made during the “Golden Age” of 3D in 1952-1955 and third in producer Ivan Tors “Office of Scientific Investigation” trilogy that includes The Magnetic Monster and Rider to the Stars.
June 4 - Poltergeist opens across the U.S. in 1982. The Steven Spielberg-written, Tobe Hooper-directed and Oscar-nominated ghost story about a suburban family terrorized by ghosts in their brand-new home is a critical and box office hit. The film makes several all-time best-of lists, and is followed by two sequels and a remake.
June 3 - Nosferatu is released in the United States in 1929, seven years after a legally tricky release in Germany. The silent expressionist horror classic directed by F.W. Murnau is an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula in all but name, and stars Max Schreck as rat-like vampire Count Orlok. The highly influential film is blocked by Stoker’s family upon its German release in 1922 and copies are ordered destroyed, but some copies survive to help supply the American release.
June 2-Twins of Evil opens across the U.S. in 1972. Released as a double feature with Hands of the Ripper, the Hammer film stars Peter Cushing and Pl***oy Playmates Mary and Madeleine Collinson and is the third in Karnstein Trilogy featuring le***an storylines of the Karnstein vampire family. Following The Vampire Lovers and Lust for a Vampire, the film receives mostly decent reviews and box office. A fourth film is never made, but Captain Kronos — Vampire Hunter is often considered an unofficial fourth film.
June 1 - The Spanish-Italian film No profanar el sueño de los mu***os opens across the U.S. in 1975. The eco-themed and Romero-inspired zombie film is released under at least 11 different titles internationally, including Let Sleeping Corpses Lie and The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue. It maintains a cult following.

May 31 - Akira Ifukube is born in Hokkaido, Japan in 1914. The king of kaiju music, he is composer of the Godzilla Theme and music for dozens of Japanese giant monster movies including Godzilla King of the Monsters, Destroy All Monsters, War of the Gargantuas, and the Daimajin trilogy. He died in 2006.
