OPINION: Let Kanu go

By Gabriel Amalu

The judgment of the Court of Appeal discharging the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, of the surviving seven count charge, after seven out of the earlier 14 count charges had been struck out by the trial court, because of his extraordinary renditioning by agents of the federal government from Kenya, is unassailable. So, the attempt by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami SAN, to give the federal government hope that Kanu can still be prosecuted in the present circumstance because he was discharged but not acquitted, is jejune.

While agreeably the charges pending against Kanu before he jumped bail, is not invalidated by the judgment, the challenge faced by the federal government is that because of the unlawful manner Kanu was brought into the country, no charge against him can be sustained until his entrance is legitimised. To argue otherwise is to say that beautifying a sepulchre can turn it to the abode of the living. Or that a faulty foundation can be rectified by building an edifice on it.

As we say in law, you cannot put something on nothing, and expect it to stand. The extraordinary renditioning of Nnamdi Kanu has rendered his trial, a legal quagmire. Since a lawful trial has become a cul-de-sac, perhaps it is time for President Muhammadu Buhari to consider a political solution to the imbroglio. Of course, the hawks around the president would argue that as an army General Buhari should not project weakness.

But this column once again remind President Buhari that willy-nilly on May 29, 2023, he will become a former president, and thereafter his tenure will face the judgment of history. On that score, he should remember that neither the defence chiefs, security chiefs, ministers nor the several hangers-on in the presidential palace will face the judgment with him. Perhaps President Goodluck Jonathan is a living example on how to become a sta

A History of Onitsha

Onitsha Mmili was known as Ado N'Idu, it was founded by one of the sons of Chima, the founder of Issele-Uku kingdom in western Igboland. Chima, a prince of the ancient Benin kingdom emigrated, settled and founded what is now known as Issele-Uku in Aniocha North Local Government Area. The eldest son of Chima eventually emigrated across the Niger River to establish the Onitsha community. It is a town in South East Nigeria famed for its commerce, education and religious centre that lies beside the Niger.

Onitsha is the largest markets in West Africa, a center point where billions of naira are transacted every day.

Onitsha operates a traditional government headed by the Obi, the titular head of the town who is assisted by Ndi Ichie, titled red cap elders or chiefs. Among these are Ndi Ichie Ume, who are the First Class Chiefs. The Ndi Ichie are classified into six, namely: Onowu Iyasele, Ajie Ukadiugwu, Odu Osodi, Onya Ozoma, Ogene Onira and Owelle Osowa, with Onowu Iyasele as the traditional Prime Minister. There are also other Ndi Ichie, who are ranked second class, known as Ndi Okwa and third class, known as Ndi Ichie Okwareze. The Ndi Ichie serve as Council of Advisers to the Obi who solicits their advice in major decisions he takes in the Kingdom.

When the ruling Obi joins his ancestors, the Onowu Iyasele takes charge until a new Obi is enthroned.

Once a year in October the kingdom of Onitsha holds the Ofala Festival which coincides with the traditional New Yam festival held in many parts of Igboland. It is a way for the people of Onitsha to keep their culture alive and it has become a major event that draws visitors from far and wide to the city.

There are nine groups of Kindred, (Ebo Etenani), making up Onitsha Ado Community.

Onitsha traditionally consists of nine villages, otherwise known as Ebo Itenani. These are descendants of the progenitor Umuezechima comprising Isiokwe, Olosi, Umuezearoli, Okebunabo, Obikporo and Ogbeotu which c

ORIGIN OF IBIBIO PEOPLE
- By Archibong Eyo

The Ibibio people are a coastal people in southern Nigeria. They are mostly found in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and in the Eastern Part of Abia State. The Ibibio are the 4th largest ethnic group in Nigeria. The Ibibio language is probably one of the mother languages of the ancient proto-Bantu nation.
They are related to the Annang, Eket, Oron, Igbo, Efik and a cluster of some notable ethnic factions. During the colonial era in Nigeria, the Ibibio Union envisaged the need to unite as one nation thus the request for recognition by the British as a sovereign nation (Noah, 1988). The Annang, Efik, Eket, Oron and Ibeno and many others do share personal names, culture, cuisine and traditions with the Ibibio, and speak closely related (dialects) of Ibibio which are more or less mutually intelligible.
As observed by G.I. Jones and Darryl Ford the word Ibibio is both an ethnic and a linguistic term. All the Ibibio people speak and understand the Ibibio language. The dialectal differences among the various Ibibio groups can be attributed largely to the long period of territorial isolation over a long period of time. Linguistic homogeneity decreases with the rise in population and with the expansion of the occupied area. With reduced interaction, the speakers of Ibibio tend to form variants of their language.
ORIGIN
As the saying goes that, a people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.
It was imperative that I draft an open memoir on the origin of the Ibibio nation since only a handful of text was available. Secondly, I longed to create an enabling environment that promotes enlightenment, debates and discussions on our heritage.
It follows that early records of Ibibio history were documented by the British colonial administrators and anthropologists. In their thesis, they vividly described various plausibility that best describes the origin of the Ibibio as

IPOB COMMENDS THE COURAGE OF APPEALS COURT JUDGES ON IPOB'S LATEST COURT VICTORY

IPOB Press Release | 15 October 2022

We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the leadership and command of Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu KANU wish to commend the Appeals Court Judges for their boldness in the landmark ruling that have taken sleep away from Attorney General of Nigeria and DSS's eyes.

We equally appreciate our indomitable team of lawyers Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, Barrister Nnaemeka Ejiofor, Barrister maxwell Okpara and others led by Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN). We thank all of you who never capitulated until this legal victory was achieved. By now the Nigeria Federal Government, Attorney General, and Department of State Services should understand that God Almighty Chukwu Okike Abiama is behind what we are doing and nothing will stop us from getting Biafra at the table where everybody will rejoice. The earlier they schedule a date for Referendum the better for all of us.

The Appeals Court discharged and acquitted our Leader, Mazi Nnamdi KANU from all charges against him because of Nigeria's executive rascality in kidnapping and extraordinarily renditioning him from Kenya to Nigeria. But for the Attorney General, Malami and DSS Agents to interpret the ruling otherwise means that they are either legally daft or they want to be above the Nigeria constitution that they claim to uphold. We in IPOB will not take such legal babarism from Malami and those he represents lying down.

The Nigeria President publicly told Elder Amaechi Mbazuluike, Professor Jorge Obiozor - Ohaneze Ndigbo President and other Igbo leaders who visited and appealed for presidential fiat to be applied in the release of Mazi Nnamdi KANU but the President said that they should wait for the court to decide. Even in one of the international meetings, the Ex- British Prime Minister, Mr. Boris Johnson asked him why is Mazi NNAMDI KANU still in dete

Nnamdi Kanu not off the hook yet - Security Council

The National Security Council has clarified the Federal Government's position on the status of the case against leader of proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

It said Kanu still has a case to answer.

An Appeal Court, in Abuja on Thursday, thrashed the case of terrorism leveled against Kanu, a decision which sent a frenzy out to various quarters.

It was translated to mean his likely immediate release from detention.

However, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, said Kanu had not been acquitted as there are other cases against him.

Towing same line of reason, the National Security Council, which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, said government is considering the next step to take on the matter in due course.

It noted that Kanu had not been acquitted though discharged of some issues in the cases against him.

Addressing State House Correspondents after the Council meeting, the Minister of Police Affairs Maigari Dingyadi, joined by the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, and the Chief of Defense Staff, General Lucky Irabor, said what would become of the case against Kanu would be decided in coming days.

"Similarly, the issue of Kanu has also been raised and Council was briefed on the state of things on the matter and it was observed that Kanu was discharged, but he was not acquitted.

"So, government is considering the appropriate action to be taken on the matter and Nigerians will be notified of the position that will finally be taken on the matter in due course", Dingyadi said.

He said the council only discussed the Appeal Court judgement but noted that solutions to these kind of matters can be considered as long as they are not subjudice.

The council also directed the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) in conjuction with the Office of the Secretary to Government of the Federation (OSGF) to set up a high-powered investigati

FGN VS NNAMDI KANU: WHAT HAPPENED IN COURT YESTERDAY

1) Lower Court earlier Struck off 8 of the 13 amended terrorism related charges against Kanu.

2) At Appealed court, Kanu’s Lawyers pressed court to strike out the entire case as Kanu will not stand trial on a case where it happened remains a secret.

3) Kanu’s lawyer, Mike OzekhomeSan asked court to determine if the extraordinary rendition of Kanu followed international process?

4) Nigerian lawyer, D Kaswe argued the court to dismiss the appeal as Kanu was returned (kidnapped) to Nigeria through due process.

5) The panel (Judges) agreed with Kanu’s lawyer that where jurisdiction is raised, it is important to deal with it first as it will affect the entire case later.

6) The panel said “It is clear that where a court lacks jurisdiction to determine a matter, every other thing it does will amount to a nullity.

7) The panel added thst the FG remained silent on the allegation that Kanu was abducted from Kenya.
“I thus agree with Ozekhome”, and FG’s refusal to state where Kanu was extradited means it is “deemed conceded by the FGN.”

8] The panel quoting the United Nations Convention, that an Extradition request shall be in writing and accompanied by a warrant of arrest to the host territory where a suspect is domiciled.

9) The judges stated that it is clear thatFGN having removed Kanu from a country without trial constitutes a fundamental violation of his right,” and that Kanu can only be returned from another country after being subjected to judicial process in the host territory.

10) The Appeal court faulted the lower court, stating that the warrant of arrest only applies within Nigeria but extraordinary rendition without formal trial in a transferring country is an error.

11) Panel added that there is a duty for Nigeria to conform with international laws and legal framework.

IPOB PRESS RELEASE

IPOB CONDOLES WITH ANAMBRA FLOOD AND BOATS MISHAPS VICTIMS.

We the global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the leadership and command of Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu KANU commiserate with the families and people of Ogbaru LGA, Anambra West, and East LGAs in Anambra State for the loss of Lives and properties in the recent flooding that swept over their Communities.

The information we gathered showed that about 81 people lost their lives as the flood from River Niger swept through some communities in Anambra State.
We sympathize with many affected families who lost their loved ones, houses, and properties including those who were forced to relocate from their homes due to the flood. May Almighty Chukwu Okike Abiama give you strength and courage to forge ahead. IPOB is in solidarity with the affected families.

We wonder why the Federal Government and her Angencies like Disaster Management Agency has not done anything in helping the victims. If this were to be in the North, all the Angencies would have used National Treasury to support them.

We are calling on Anambra State Government, Nigeria Government, and International Ecological Intervention Bodies to intervene and rescue our people in Ogbaru LGA, Anambra West, and East LGAs of Anambra State by finding a permanent solution to this yearly flooding menace.

Ogbaru LGA and other Communities at the banks of River Niger must know that whenever Biafra comes they will never experience this kind of calamity, because Biafra Engineers will ensure that there is sensible urban planning and enough Sea defense to stop any sort of flood from River Niger to overflow to the sorrunding Communities.

We understand that the Government of Nigeria is not concerned about any Ecological interventions nor environmental protection in Biafra Land. These and many more are the injustices that Biafra Nation will address when the time comes.

Men, if you want your son to follow in your footsteps read this.

- Realize he’s not exactly you

Your son may have different interests than you.

Don’t discourage these interests instead embrace them and his area where he flourishes.

- Don’t give him everything

Teach him to work for things he wants.

Never spoil him otherwise by the time manhood comes he will have a horrible time adjusting to not having everything his way.

- Discipline him

Show him right and wrong.

Explain through discipline that there are consequences for bad actions.

It seems harsh but your children will come to appreciate this as long as you do it in love.

- Set a good example

Sons look up to their fathers. They pay attention to every move you make.

Don’t let him down.

Eat healthy, treat your wife right, workout, spend time with family.

He might not follow all your words, but he will surely follow your actions. Be mindful what you do in their presence. Say what you mean and do what you say.

NDIGBO VOTED IZON'S ISAAC BORO
BUT HE TURNED AGAINST THEM

Jasper Isaac Adaka Boro became President of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) Students Union in the 1964/65 session, after he defeated Jude Emezie, an Igbo student, with 11 votes.

Igbo students constituted the majority at UNN and Emezie was strongly backed by the out going president, Onyemanze Ejiogu. There was a third candidate, Secretary General Francis Okolie. Igbo students chose Boro, an Izon man to lead them.

Following the flawed Federal elections of 1964, UNN under the leadership of Boro took the Federal Government to court. Boro was First Plaintiff. Second Plaintiff was Emezie.
Boro did not return to Nsukka after that. He chose to remain in Lagos.

The next anyone heard of him was leader, Niger Delta Volunteer Forces.
In March 1966, he declared Niger Delta Republic, hoisting a flag and flaunting a constitution.

Boro was tried by a Port Harcourt High Court presided over by Justice Phil Ebosie. Boro was defended by Godfrey Amachree. He was found guilty alongside his lieutenants, Sam Timipre Owonaro and Nottingham Dick.

The Supreme Court upheld the judgment. Justices of the Supreme Court were Chief Justice of Nigeria, Adetokunbo Ademola, Ian Lewis, G.B.A. Coker, Charles Daddy Onyeama and Frank Ajegbo.

At no time did the Igbo, through Gen. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi Ironsi and Col. Emeka Ojukwu set up a Kangaroo tribunal to punish Boro.
Boro was released as war broke out and chose to fight on the Federal side wearing the rank of Major.

He helped the 3rd Marine Commandos clear Biafra from the Niger Delta creeks.
It is an open secret that a top Federal officer planned an ambush which killed Boro on May 9, 1968 in Ogu, Okrika, Rivers State. Similar ambush was plotted against Lt.cols Alani Akinrinade and Godwin Alabi-Isama in the Asa area of Biafra.
