As we explore Mexico City, let's acknowledge the complex layers of history, where churches were erected over ancient temples, merging spirituality from different eras.

Marked by the arrival of Spanish conquistadors, led by Hernán Cortés, in the early 16th century., the conquest of the Aztec Empire resulted in significant cultural, religious, and architectural changes, often involving the destruction and repurposing of indigenous structures.
One notable aspect was the construction of Catholic churches over indigenous temples. The Spanish sought to impose their religious beliefs and erase indigenous practices. Many temples and ceremonial centers, which held deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Mexica people, were dismantled, and in their place, churches were erected.

This intentional act of building over existing structures was a symbolic gesture of asserting dominance and replacing native beliefs with Christianity.

The Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlan, the ceremonial center of the Aztec capital, was particularly affected. The Templo Mayor, a magnificent complex of twin temples dedicated to the Aztec gods Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc, was destroyed by the Spanish, and the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heavens was constructed on the same site.

This cultural imposition not only erased physical structures but also disrupted the spiritual and cultural continuity of the indigenous peoples.
