The Grape is Oberlin College’s alternative student newspaper. Established in the late 90s as a counterpoint to Oberlin’s paper of record, The Grape has gone through countless iterations and reinventions over the past two decades. Although the paper has been kn
own for having a satirical or humorous bent, we’ve worked in recent years to broaden the scope of our content and contributors. We hope to act as an accessible platform for anyone to share what’s on their mind, and to represent as many different voices on campus as possible. The Grape is where art, politics, pop culture, student life, activism and skepticism collide; it’s where articles that don’t quite fit in at any other publication come to find a home.
“So is The Grape, like, not funny anymore?”
In a word, no. As Katie Couric once said, “We love humor,“ and we’re proud that our writers are known for having both strong, individual voices and a funny bone to boot. Humor can often get to the root of a point, and reveal important truths in ways that traditional approaches to a subject simply cannot. But we think it’s important that humor always be used with intention and direction. Because we know that it’s only too easy to produce lazy, and even offensive content under the guise of "Well, it was just a joke.”
So that’s why we want to stress that we are more than just the “funny” publication on campus. But we really do hope you do get some comic relief out of each issue, considering how crazy and stressful daily life in Lorain County can get. We’ve just made a little less of a prerogative as we aim to spotlight student opinion and achievement in all its forms.
