Rarity Rock Radio Featured Artist/Band of the Week:
Wolf Kroeger - Music/Photo/Paint
Rarity Rock Radio is continuing its multigenre virtual residency in partnership with ReverbNation with this week's featured artist returning to RRR, Wolf Kroeger
Catch the song "Train To Orwellia” playing daily following the RRR Top 10 Favorites of the Month for July 2024 at 9am, Noon, and 6pm MST from July 1st - July 7th rarityrockradio.com
About the artist:
Based in Los Angeles, Wolf Kroeger hasn’t always called California his home. Originally from France, he traveled to many countries and finally moved to the United States at the age of eighteen on his own. His upbringing exposed him to a diversity of cultures, and his fascination for them still grows. It transpires in his lyrics, which blend elements from Greek myths to Native American legends into his story-telling. Although rooted in Psychedelia, his music is eclectic and influenced by various genres and eras. Wolf writes, produces, and plays all the instruments in his songs, except for drums on a few tracks.
About the song:
This song is part of the story-telling album “A Tale Of Shadows And Dreams” and is loosely inspired by George Orwell’s literature. It was written before the pandemic but seems to gather more meaning as time progresses. In any case, it’s a call to be true to your individuality and steer clear of indoctrination, to carve your own path free of the influence of others. Jump off that train and wander through the desert alone! To represent this notion through music, the arrangements are eclectic. Surrounding the main guitar part with percussions, world instruments and synthesis. The drums drive that train and were played by David “Triple D” Diaz, who came up with his original parts. I hope you will enjoy the music and find your own meaning in the lyrics.

Hard-Fi
Song Featured:
"Don't Go Making Plans" (a brand new song)
About the song:
According to NME, “Hard-Fi have returned with ‘Don’t Go Making Plans’ – their first new single in a decade. Announced today (May 20), the new track marks the first from the band in 10 years and comes as the taster of their forthcoming EP of the same name. With the track, Richard Archer and co. bring the summer feeling, delivering a fast-paced, groovy and soul-infused anthem. “All my money keeps walking out the door/ No, I don’t know, what do they want it all for?” the frontman questions in the opening lyrics, keeping a politically motivated theme at the core. “There’s a heavy feeling hanging about the place/ feels like I’m down down down, on my face, and a boot in my back,” he continues, before launching into the pop-infused chorus. According to the band, the song’s themes were initially inspired by the UK Government’s attempts to criminalise many aspects of popular protest through the 2022 Public Order Act, and is meant to provoke thought in the listeners.”

Featuring:
Fantastic Cat Band
Song Featured:
"Later On" (from new album 'Now That's What I Call Fantastic Cat')
About the song:
According to Magnet Magazine, “The group’s second album, Now That’s What I Call Fantastic Cat, is out June 7 via Missing Piece Records. It also has a surplus of fantastic moments, including “Later On,” which began life in Dunne’s rehearsal space. “The verses are grounded in existential worries and musings, the choruses a declaration of faith in human connection,” says Dunne. “It was a tender ballad, but I didn’t bring it to the band until I heard a song Don and Anthony were working on with similar chords. That inspired me to reconsider it as a slightly heavier, up-tempo song.” Dunne also acknowledges Fantastic Cat’s obvious debt to the Band. “When (Rick) Danko and (Richard) Manuel are both singing lead, you can’t tell which one is doing what,” says Dunne. “Mike and I decided to sing ‘Later On’ together, and Anthony and Don filled out the coda with their call-and-response vocals. Don set up the mics at his studio, we hit record, and we got this one down in a few takes.” Much like everything else with Fantastic Cat, the video for “Later On” is a homespun affair. “We shot it ourselves on our tour of the U.S. and Canada,” says Dunne. “It plays out as a travelogue of sorts, and it’s probably the sincerest thing we’ve done to date. Don’t get used to it.”

"Play Anything. Or call it: A Lapsed Music Writer Tries to Prove He’s Still Got It. On Play Anything, DJ Matt Singer plays, well, anything – from post-punk to punk-funk, mutant disco to synth pop, new wave to old-time rock’n’roll, or anything that otherwise rocks, knocks, bangs, slaps or whatever other cringey (yet totally appropriate) descriptor you prefer. This month, that includes some very early synth-punk and an early punk gone synth-pop, jazz-funk about doin’ it in the park and Italo-disco about doin’ it with aliens, mournful murder ballads, Nigerian twin sisters singing psychedelic Afrobeat and a Tex-Mex supergroup."

Nada Surf
Song Featured:
"In Front Of Me Now" (from upcoming new album)
About the song:
According to Stereogum, ““In Front Of Me Now” comes with a music video directed by Neilson Hubbard and Joshua Britt. Moon Mirror is their debut for their new label New West. It was produced by the band with Ian Laughton and recorded at the renowned Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales. About the process, Matthew Caws explained: Every time we make an album, I’m asked (and ask myself) what it’s about. I never know how to answer that question. I’m still trying to figure everything out, and that’s probably as close to a theme as there is. Looking back over the years, I know what our songs are about in theory: trying to reach acceptance (of circumstances, of oneself, of others), connection, a constant search for possibility and the bright side, a willingness to change, forgiveness, curiosity, checking in with one’s mortality, motivations and judgements, etc. But in the moment when making one up, I have no idea what I’m doing and maybe that’s ok. I’m just trying to stay honest with myself and take my best guess at making sense of the world.””

Featuring:
Dr. Dog
Song Featured:
"Talk Is Cheap" (from the upcoming new album)
About the song:
According to Beyond The Watch, “Dr. Dog is back with exciting news for fans, announcing their upcoming self-titled album, the band’s first LP in six years, set for release on July 19th, 2024. To kick things off, they've shared the infectious lead single “Talk Is Cheap” along with a Wyndham Garnett-directed video, offering behind-the-scenes glimpses of the band during the album’s recording sessions. Bassist Toby Leaman describes the single as a love song dedicated to his wife, reflecting his reliance on her. With jangling grooves and heartfelt lyrics, “Talk Is Cheap” sets the tone for the album, showcasing Dr. Dog's signature eclectic spirit, shifting effortlessly from soul to surf-rock to symphonic pop. The album, produced by Scott McMicken and mixed by multi-Grammy-winner Matt Ross-Spang, reveals the band's evolution over their two-decade-long career, demonstrating a deep synergy and commitment to creating music that brightens the mind and expands the soul.”

Featuring:
Blondshell featuring Bully
Song Featured:
"Docket" (a brand new song)
About the song:
According to Rolling Stone, “In what could very well be the indie-rock collab of the year, Blondshell has enlisted Bully for the new rager “Docket.” “Docket” is classic Blondshell, as Sabrina Teitelbaum pairs a sugary, melodic riff with brazen lyrics about love on the road — and a chorus that will stay in your head for days. She trades verses with Bully (Alicia Bognanno), her feathery yet mighty vocals rounding out the track.”

New rock music gems playing daily at 9am, Noon, and 6pm MST at rarityrockradio.com
Featuring:
Pigeon
Song Featured:
"Backslider" (from 'Backslider' EP)
About the song and EP from the band:
"Following up on their acclaimed debut EP Yagana in 2022, the 5-piece band returns with a brand new offering: Backslider. Dressed as if they would be equally comfortable starring in a modern spaghetti western as they are cutting slick silhouettes on a festival stage - are Guinean singer Falle Nioke, Graham Godfrey on drums, Steve Pringle on keys, Tom Dream on guitar and Josh Ludlow on bass. As Pigeon develop and hone their sound further, Afro-disco remains at the core while jazz and no-wave make way for new elements of electro, rock and synth pop. The introduction of sequencers and drum machines sprinkles a little more structure into the mix, however the recording process still very much embodies the DIY spirit of band members that enjoy jamming together. On the single 'Backslider', a laid-back, 80s funk-rock bassline is backed by a deliberate, plodding drum kit. Kicking off with congas and synth stabs which appear optimistic at first, frontman Falle Nioke proceeds to sing in English and French - calling someone a 'backslider', for their dishonesty and bad behaviour. His cool air of contempt is mirrored by an epic guitar solo drenched in distortion pedal."

About the song:
According to Relix, “Ooh La La’s title comes from their song “Keep Going.” (The line goes, “I bought a ticket but the train didn’t stop/ Ended up walking all the way, singing ooh la la.”) And that sentiment represents the whole album well: The 10 songs capture the wonder one feels when the magic of youth shows up in adulthood. Guster created Ooh La La with just one bottom line: Do these songs make us feel something and bring some pure emotion to the surface?”

MEET ME AT THE END OF THE WORLD” A FUNDRAISER FOR: Jesse Malin Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/JESSEMALINFUND
About the special song campaign for Jesse Malin led by Trapper Schoepp and being promoted by Rarity Rock Radio
According to Trapper Schoepp:
“Last year I sang this song all across Europe with my friend, Jesse Malin. It’s called ‘Meet Me at the End of the World,’ and to me, it’s about staring into the darkness of these times and still finding your little piece of community, camaraderie and joy in it all. These are the times we need the music most, after all. Unfortunately, only a couple months after that tour ended, Jesse would be tested in one of the worst ways a human could. While out to dinner in NYC, he suffered a rare spinal stroke that left him paralyzed from the waist down. For a man who is, to me, the picture of good health, this news was very difficult to hear. Jesse Malin is a rock n roll singer and beat poet in the vein of NYC greats like Lou Reed and Joey Ramone. He’s true cool. His style and spirit is completely unpretentious, and I truly believe he’s one of the great live acts of our time. I’ve seen him play to both fifty and a thousand people with the same level of intensity and care. He has an undeniable and authentic punk rock edge, which comes from years of playing in hardcore bands. His shows can be intense and emotional — but also very funny. There’s no musician who has made me laugh as hard as him. He has taught me to not take myself too seriously but to still always show up and give a sh*t. “Keep the P.M.A.” as he likes to say... Those close to Jesse also know him as a tireless nightclub owner, who has helped run some of the hippest spots in the city for years. He’s brought thousands of great bands through NYC — and probably picked up their tab! While Jesse is making strides toward recovery, he will need a high level of a care that’ll come with a high price tag. Please give back t
Stay tuned tomorrow for more details with one of RRR’s favorite artists @trapperschoepp supporting his fundraising efforts for one of the best out there @jesse_malin

Featured Best of 2023 Album: ‘Siren Songs’ by Trapper Schoepp
Featured Songs: “Cliffs of Dover” and “Secrets of the Breeze”
According to Folk Radio UK, “Not only was Siren Songs recorded at Johnny Cash’s Cash Cabin in Hendersonville (where they used his 1930s Martin and June’s Steinway), but the cover has Trapper Schoepp posing by the same pool where Cash would read and dispose of letters sent to him by Dylan. Not surprising then that both artists feed into this collection of traditional American and, especially, Irish folk-influenced songs, with Schoepp citing The Chieftains, the Clancy Brothers and Paul Brady as prime inspirations.
It is a consistently, infectiously melodic album that makes you positively want to head for the nearest highway so you can cruise with it pumping out of the car speakers, maybe occasionally taking time to park up and gaze at the stars; its siren call is irresistible.”

Rarity Rock Radio
Rarity Rock Radio's mission is showcasing under-the-radar rock gems from known artists and from artists that should be known from the past to the present.
What makes Rarity Rock Radio distinct?
Rarity Rock Radio (RRR) is about the magic of the discovery process - about music that takes you on a journey with both mainstay artists as a foundation along with new sonic landscapes in the mix for many surprises along the way. RRR is about the songs and artists that conventional radio missed and could connect with a wider audience along with the songs and artists that forge bold new paths for rock music on a broad spectrum. It is about music that can bring us together through both positive, uplifting anthems and introspective, thoughtful lyrics; music with a message that can challenge the audience and question our values as a society with ideas for a better way forward; and music that carries the traditions of rock forward while experimenting with new ways to connect with audiences of all ages. Tune in to it all on RRR!
