Biofilms are the primary cause of hospital infections, antimicrobial resistance, enhanced spread of pathogens, and in industry, corrosion of surfaces. On the other hand, microbial biofilms can be harnessed in industrial applications such as bioremediation, microbial electrolysis, and fuel cells. New materials are being engineered for both of these applications, preventing biofilms in the former and encouraging them for the latter. These include new materials that are hydrophobic, engineered surfaces and coatings, nanotopographies, and more. This special issue, Surface engineering and biofilms, will put together papers that document the development of new materials, and engineered surfaces, with a clear requirement for specific applications.
