How about that bridge-to-bridge “glow-in-the-dark” multi-use path between the Brooks Bridge in Fort Walton Beach and the Marler Bridge in Destin? The 12-foot-wide path will be constructed using photoluminescent stone, which will allow it to be illuminated at night! The path will accommodate pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Motorized vehicles like golf carts, low-speed vehicles, or gas-powered scooters will not be allowed. The project’s completion is expected early next year. Reservations for the special evening include the choice of two types of meat: BBQ ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and smoked chicken. A fishing trip on a pier turned into a rescue mission for a quick-thinking father and son who inadvertently hooked an endangered loggerhead sea turtle. Don't cut the line if you hook or entangle a sea turtle. Instead, contact the FWC’s 24-hour Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

An Unintended Catch Springs Law Enforcement Into Action
A father and son were enjoying a fishing trip from the pier when they encountered an unintended catch. The son’s line hooked an imperiled loggerhead sea turtle, prompting dad to act quickly by calling the Escambia County Natural Resources Management turtle program number saved in his phone from a sign spotted earlier on the pier.

Working together, Escambia turtle program and FWC officers were able to move the turtle into calmer waters by the dock. Using a net, they safely rescued the animal and transported it to a nearby rehabilitation center- Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park

Sea turtles can be accidentally hooked while fishing. Don’t cut the line! Sea turtles that are hooked or entangled often require veterinary attention. A fishing hook left intact can seriously impair a sea turtle’s ability to forage or cause fatal injuries, and attempting to remove the hook can cause further harm to the turtle. In the event you find yourself with a hooked or entangled sea turtle, don’t cut the line and contact the FWC’s 24-hour Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

All sea turtle species are protected in Florida. You can help sea turtles by reporting anyone disturbing a sea turtle or nest, as well as sea turtles that are sick, injured, entangled or dead to Wildlife Alert.

With deep sadness, we share the news of the passing of Jerry Colquitt, a dedicated former Niceville High School educator and head baseball coach who spent nearly 30 years serving, promoting, and caring for his Eagle students and families. He passed away on Sunday, June 9.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Coach Colquitt on Friday, June 14, at Church on Bayshore. The service is at 6:15 p.m. after visitation from 5 to 6 p.m. Please wear Niceville High School Eagles or patriotic attire to honor his memory. Please join us in congratulating Andrew Roberts, a junior at Niceville High School Eagles, for winning first place in the 2024 Florida State Music Teachers Association State Senior Brass Concerto Competition!

What's more, this marks Andrew’s second consecutive year winning the FSMTA State Concerto Competition.

Andrew has made the Florida All-State Band several times, performed in Carnegie Hall as Principal Trombone with the National Honors Performance Series High School Band, performed as featured trombone soloist at the National Bandfest of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, and performed in Boston’s Mechanics Hall as trombonist with the Sousa National High School Honor Band.

The NHS junior has been honored to serve as Principal Trombone of the NHS Wind Symphony, Lead Trombone of NHS Jazz One, Trombone Section Leader of the NHS Eagle Pride Marching Band, and 1st Chair of the Okaloosa All-County Honor Band. He was recently voted to be the NHS Band President for his upcoming senior year.
