How Important is the Old Testament to Modern Christians?

If you only know the New Testament, you only know about 2% of the Bible.

Think about the other 98%, do you think there's any information you might be missing?

Exodus tells us that the Israelites were enslaved people long enough for them to number into the hundreds of thousands. - (Exodus 12:37) That's a long time.

During this time, the power shifted, and the Pharoah changed. (Exodus 1:8; 2:23) But this did not bring relief or deliverance. It made it worse. Relief only came from one source - Yahweh. What took Him so long to rescue them?

The verse I quote from Exodus 2:23, 24 is a pivotal moment in the Exodus story. The story shifts with those words - their cry for help was heard by God. It wasn't until they turned to God that deliverance came.

We are in this same situation in America today. Have you grown tired of what's happening in our schools? Or cities? Even our churches? I have heard a few say we need a revival.

So did Israel. But it didn't begin until they turned to God in prayer.

It begins with us turning to God. Once Israel did this, God provided the solution and the Exodus.

Remember this, especially as we enter election season. It wasn't the changing of the Pharoah that caused their situation to improve. It was them turning to God.

Last night, I was looking at the nativity scene we have set up in our yard. Ours only has Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus.

However, above the three of them is the Star of Bethlehem. This made me laugh. Why?

The star was not present for Jesus' birth. That star comes later in the story. For Jesus' birth, the verse I quote in the meme is the sign that is given – a child wrapped in cloths lying in a manger.

There are several things our culture holds to be true about Jesus' birth. For example, we believe:

A star was present at his birth
Three wise men were present at his birth
That there were specifically three wise men
Mary rode a donkey to Bethlehem
That Mary was on the verge of birthing Jesus when she got there

However, the Bible does not state any of this. In some cases, it states the opposite. Nevertheless, these details are part of the story for some reason. Why does this matter?

The above details may not impact how we understand our faith or our Savior. But, here is the question…

If we believe things about the nativity that are not true, what else has made it into our theology that is not true but does affect our understanding of our faith or Jesus? It is something to think about.

A common misinterpretation of scripture is that man did not know what rain was until Noah's time, until the flood.

This is not true and is explained in scripture.

At the beginning of the creative event, plants had not yet sprouted. Why? Genesis 2:5, 6 gives us two reasons: 1.) Because it had not yet rained. Notice that this verse ties the growth of plants to rain. But reason 2.) Because man had not yet been created to take care of the plants.

Once Adam is created, plants would be needed to feed him and for him to cultivate. Once the need for plants existed, rain would be required.

Rain was as common for Adam as it is for you and me. Rain is a gift from God and has been present since the first man, Adam.

I love this verse, as well as the entire account in chapter nine of John's Gospel.

Chapter Nine reminds me of a few things to remember when teaching others.

First, it is a process. People do not become disciples overnight. The blind man sees Jesus as just another man at first (9:11). Then he begins to see Jesus as a prophet (9:17). Finally, he recognizes Jesus as the Messiah (9:37, 38). Belief takes time.

Second, when one begins to accept Christ, there will be various responses around the new disciples. Many of those will be negative. The people who knew the blind man did not believe and tried to disprove what was happening. The religious leaders tried to threaten, discredit, and defame Jesus. The blind man himself experienced opposition and persecution for believing.

Do not get discouraged if opposition and defamation happen when you try to teach Christ to others or if you are one who is coming to Christ yourself. It is to be expected.

Blessings and Maranatha, all!

I was standing at the southern border of Israel, staring into the wilderness that extends into Egypt. I was looking at a map.

I noticed that the path the Israelites took to get from Egypt to the Sinai desert wasn't the easiest or most direct route to take. Why would God lead them the way He did?

Exodus answers that for us - "For God said, 'The people might change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.' Hence God led the people around by the way of the wilderness to the Red Sea." - Exodus 13:17, 18

What we see as the easiest path may not be the easiest. What we see as the best path may not be the best. What we see as "the way of the wilderness" might be God protecting us and doing what is best for us.

Trust what He is doing and where He is leading you.

What is the purpose of a prophet?

It is not simply about foretelling future events.

The prophet's purpose was to make the people see the world and their current circumstances through the eyes of the Lord. The prophet's purpose was to deliver the message of the Lord. The prophet's purpose was to provoke the people to return to the Lord, to provoke repentance.

One way the prophet would accomplish this was by foretelling what the future would be like if they did not change now.

Be cautious of a message that does not direct the people back to the Lord but is only about the prophet himself/herself.

There is a common prayer; it goes something like this -

"...Come into my heart...Forgive me...Save me..."

Compare the words of that prayer to the words God gives the prophet Ezekiel quoted in the photo. There is a difference between the two.

God's plan for you is bigger than what's in that prayer.
It's more transformative.
It's more radical.

It involves becoming something new.

It involves a heart transplant, not a simple takeover of our current heart.

What kind of heart does our Lord offer us?

"I will put my law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people." - Jeremiah 31:33

For everyone who is watching our Scapegoat series, this sums it up.

These are two different concepts. The later is taught more prevalently than the former.

Once you understand what Yahweh began in Eden, the difference between these two concepts becomes night and day.

Yes! But there is more to the story than this.

Should Christians care about what is happening in Israel? What should our viewpoint on Israel be?

Stayed tuned. This is a topic we will address in an upcoming episode. I believe the title will be “I will be their God and they shall be my people.”

This will ruffle many of your feathers...but many refuse to look at facts
