Press Release:

Early Morning Fire Displaces Three

Syracuse, NY- On Sunday, December 31, 2023, at 6:38 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 center to a report of a possible fire at 911 Park Avenue, on the City’s West Side. Firefighters from Station 5, on North Geddes Street, arrived on the scene just over two-and-a-half minutes later, to find a two-and-a-half story, wood-frame home with nothing showing from the exterior.

As the first arriving crews began to investigate, they were met by the occupant of the second-floor apartment, who directed them to the second floor, reporting that there was fire in a light fixture there. As crews stretched a hose to the second floor and continued to investigate, they encountered light smoke, and could see what appeared to be a fire in the fixture. When they reached the attic, to investigate there, firefighters encountered smoke and fire. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted.

Additional crews arriving at the scene immediately went to work moving hose lines into the building to put out the fire, and searching the entire home for any possible trapped victims. All searches were negative; all occupants of the home were able to escape prior to fire department arrival. Through the quick work of all involved, the fire was confined to the space between the second floor and attic, where it began, as well as a portion of the attic above the fire.

The fire was declared out after approximately 40 minutes. The second-floor apartment and attic suffered fire, smoke, and water damage. The first-floor apartment also suffered water damage. A total of three occupants were displaced by this fire; they are being assisted by the Red Cross. Syracuse Fire Investigators have determined that the fire started in a light fixture on the second floor, and spread to the attic, due to an electrical issue. There were no injuries reported to civilians, or to firefighters at the scene.

A total of 39 Fire Department personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.

Seven Displaced Following Union Place Fire

Syracuse, NY- On Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 3:48 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported possible structure fire at 404 Union Place, on the City’s North Side. Firefighters from Station 2, on Lodi Street, arrived on the scene one minute and thirty seconds later. The first arriving crews found a two-story, multiple-family house with flames blowing out a first-floor window on the side of the building. Crews were also alerted to the possibility of people trapped inside the building. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted.

The first arriving crews initiated an aggressive interior fire attack, with crews stretching hoses into the building to battle the flames, and other crews starting searches for the potentially trapped occupants. As additional fire companies arrived, more hoses were stretched into the building to cut off the fire’s spread. Teams of firefighters also performed methodical searches of each apartment on the first and second floor. All searches were negative; no victims were found. It was later confirmed that all occupants were able to escape the fire on their own. Hose teams were able to extinguish the fire on the first floor in approximately 10 minutes. Firefighters checking for fire spread found flames in the attic as well and were able to extinguish them, preventing more severe damage. The fire was declared out after approximately 35 minutes.

The fire was determined to have started in a first-floor apartment. Syracuse Fire Investigators are working to determine the cause. The first-floor apartment where the fire began sustained severe fire, smoke, and water damage. Fire also damaged the attic. The remainder of the structure sustained smoke and water damage. Seven occupants were displaced by this fire. They are being assisted by the Red Cross. There were no injuries reported to civilians or to Firefighters at the scene.

A total of 42 Fire Department personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.

On Sunday December 24, 2023 at 9:10 pm, the Cicero Fire Department was alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center for a report of a residential fire at 5657 Central Ave.

As this alarm was dispatched, Cicero C-2, C-3, T-1 were on-scene of a unknown type alarm sounding and quickly cleared to respond to the residential fire.

As Cicero C-2, C-3, T-1 were en-route, notes received by the Onondaga County Department of Emergency Communications indicated that there was black smoke coming from the residence, no lights on, no response from anyone inside (caller was yelling to get their attention).

At 9:12 pm, North Syracuse Police Department Unit 4101C arrived and confirmed with the caller (neighbor) there was an elderly female trapped inside.

At 9:14 pm, Cicero C-2, C-3, T-1, arrived, C-2 confirmed the dispatch information (smoke showing, occupant trapped) and transmitted a Signal 99 (working fire).

The crew of T-1, C-3 and Clay Fire Department C-1, C-3 quickly deployed a handline entering the residence through the front door where they were met with no visibility, fire in the rear of the residence and high heat.

As this crew made their way down the hallway to the bedroom areas, a victim was located in the bedroom, unconscious, not breathing.

The victim was quickly removed from the residence, turned over to North Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps who was waiting in the front yard to begin life saving measures.

At 9:42 pm, Incident Command reported the fire was under control, overhaul was in progress and that the Onondaga County Fire Investigation Team was begining their investigation.

As any fire is difficult to deal with, this alarm was extremely difficult for those who responded as the victim succumbed to her injuries and being on Christmas Eve.

The Cicero Fire Department is appreciative for the excellent job that the Onondaga County Department of Emergency Communications staff did from the start of this incident to the finish and the assistance of our mutual aid partners (fire service departments, organizations) who have reached out throughout NYS to check on our members.

Our continued thoughts are with the family, neighbors and emergency responders on-scene.

Firefighters Rescue Two from Apartment Building Fire

Syracuse, NY- On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at 6:41 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a report of a possible fire at 111 Smith Lane. Firefighters from Station 8, on South Salina Street, were the first to arrive on the scene less than three minutes later. Crews found a three-story brick apartment building with no indication of anything wrong as they pulled up. As firefighters began to investigate the scene, they opened the front door and found an intensely burning fire in a first-floor hallway. At the same time, a District Chief on the scene, performing a 360-degree check of the structure, found heavy black smoke coming from rear windows, and an occupant trapped, hanging from a second-floor window. A signal ‘99’ was transmitted as crews worked to rescue the trapped occupant.

As additional crews arrived on the scene, hoses were stretched into the structure to fight the flames. Almost immediately, a crew of firefighters from the first arriving truck company, Truck 8, were hoisting a ladder to the second-floor windows and the trapped occupant was successfully rescued. Teams of firefighters searching inside the structure found a second trapped occupant and were able to es**rt them safely out of the building as well. Both occupants were evaluated at the scene by medical personnel for possible injuries, however neither was transported to a hospital. Additional crews of firefighters were called to the scene, due to the thought that there may be more people trapped, however no additional victims were located, and the extra engine was able to return to service.

Firefighters were able to bring the intense flames under control quickly, but not before the first and second floor of the three-story building suffered heavy fire, smoke, and heat damage. The rest of the building also sustained smoke damage. The fire was declared out after approximately 40 minutes. Crews spent more than an hour using powerful fans to remove lingering and trapped smoke from the building. At least one occupant was displaced by this fire; they were being assisted by the Red Cross. Syracuse Fire investigators were on the scene conducting a cause and origin investigation.

A total of 42 Fire Department personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
