Confusing “comfortability” with “stagnancy”

Go to school. Get a degree. Get a job. Move up in your linear career. Spend 2 days a week “off.” Go back to work.

Over and over and over for the rest of your life until you retire or die.

😅

One thing we face when we leave the athlete environment and integrate into typical societal norms is this:

• We are faced with the widespread belief that once someone achieves a certain level of comfort or stability, they should remain in that state indefinitely.

It’s already difficult to redefine who you are when you throw out your athlete identity.

But it becomes especially confusing when the community you find yourself in doesn’t have the same growth-mindset as you.

So, no matter how far removed you are from sports, if you are still struggling to enjoy yourself in the typical 9-5, “status quo” life... nothing is wrong with you.

I don’t know about you, but “stagnancy” and “comfort” do not go hand in hand for me.

What about you?

“Why are you so serious all the time?!”

“Do you ever relax?”

“Take a chill pill.”

“Woah.. you’re almost yelling. Can you quiet down?”

“You’re just too much for me.”

——————

Being labelled “too intense” is something so many former athletes have to deal with. Sports, especially competitive sports, taught you the importance of hard work, passion, and focus.

Not everyone was taught that.

In case no one told you... being called “too intense” is a reflection on the other person... not on you.

Don’t dim your lights because others are uncomfortable by how bright you shine.

I have so much to say here... but I’d love to hear from YOU ALL!

Have you ever been labeled intense?

What are your thoughts on being an intense person?

👋🏼 Are You Feeling Lonely?😣

Something that doesn’t get enough attention in the former athlete community (and honestly humans post-pandemic) is how lonely adulthood is compared to athlete life.

The sudden loss of locker room chat, team-bonding road trips or dinners, multiple practices a week, and lack of professional support can hit really heavy for years and years.

The irony? You’re not along in your feelings of isolation.💗

Living a normal life outside of competitive sports spurs feelings of emptiness, loneliness, and a lack of purpose for so, so many.

I’ve found that this time of year intensifies these feelings for those who have them.

I hear the same from many of my clients.

So, what can you do?👇

1️⃣Reinforce your identity outside of sports. Who else are you?

2️⃣Acknowledge your feelings of loneliness. The “fear of being alone” is a common theme in all of humanity. Every one of us, in some capacity or another, feels alone. Show that part of you some love.

3️⃣Be open to new ways of connection & community.
Recreate structure and join groups that work towards passions you have.

4️⃣Get a COACH to help you work through this and recreate consistent support, community, and routine. This is such a game changer!!!!!!

5️⃣Reach out to your current space and voice these feelings. Not only will it make you feel better, but those in your life will feel seen as well.

🚨The Covid Pandemic intensified these feelings of loneliness and honestly, humans are yearning for connection more than ever. Please know that this space is here for you and every one of us (I’m sure I speak for the vast majority) would welcome a message from you if you needed a friend or “teammate.”

Comment below: is this something you struggle/struggled with? What helped you shift out of this?

No one talks about the feelings of loss that occur after you move on from your sport and leave your teammates.

Teammates are often closer than siblings and best friends. You see them everyday. You’ve seen them happy, excited, sad, angry, frustrated. They’ve witnessed you at some of your highest highs and lowest lows.

Let’s be honest, it’s hard to match this type of friendship. So what happens when you retire from sports and transition to finding a new community?

It can be a struggle!

Where have you created and connected with a new community post athletics? Drop your answer below ✨

Mine (Herm) is 1000% feeling the need to pop my hips, crack my neck, or stretch anywhere and everywhere.

As former athletes, we are no stranger to competition. Most of us spent years as competitors, working under pressure, playing to WIN.

Without a sport to channel that competitive nature or competitive mindset, it can often leak into other areas of life…

If you struggle with channeling your competitive spirit after sports, you won’t want to miss EPISODE 5 dropping tomorrow!

👋🏼 Allow us to introduce ourselves…

🏊🏻‍♀️ Lyss:

After retiring from her sport, Lyss went on to develop a passion for traveling, self development, and health/wellness, especially fitness.

Recognizing her love for helping others, she became a board certified nurse coach.

As a coach, she helps the overachiever and people pleaser find confidence in setting boundaries while working on personal health goals.

Fun facts from Lyss:
1. I’ll always have the travel bug.
2. I love both the ocean and mountains, and can’t decide if I like surfing or skiing more.
3. I’m a Leo 🦁
4. I’ve lived in 7 different states, including Hawaii🌈
5. I want to lead holistic health retreats one day

⚽️ Herm:

Herms is a former competitive soccer player and still plays to this day, though soccer is no longer her #1 personality trait (allegedly).

She too is a board-certified nurse coach whose work focuses mainly on helping former athletes create identity and fulfillment post-sports.

You’ll also catch her traveling, nose-deep in a book, or cooking while dancing like an absolute fool.🤪

Fun Facts from Herm:
1. I am 4’11” 😉
2. The only time you’ll catch me running is if it’s after a ball (I’m basically a dog)
3. I live in Chicago & love it! 🎉
4. I dropped a graduate degree to pursue my business and haven’t looked back once.
5. When I see old people crossing the street I cry because of how cute they are.

SURPRISE!🥵

Hiring a coach is a POWERFUL way to level up, especially as a former athlete.

It isn’t for everyone. But it might just be for you.👀

This episode is for the individuals who are tired of hearing Lyss & Herm talk about their coaching spaces without understanding what it actually means to work with us.😂

In this episode, we talk about our personal journey to becoming coaches, what it looks like to work with us, and REAL, BADASS results that clients have seen.

In the coming weeks, both Lyss & Herm are kicking off new group coaching spaces. It simply made sense to record a video highlighting the cool parts of this sort of support.

Don’t skip this episode! It’s truly 🔥

Welcome to the So You're a Former Athlete And.. podcast page! This is where we will share sneak peeks of new episodes, topics of discussion related to former athlete life, and so much more!

This page is run by Alyssa Hermann (aka Alyssa or Herm) and Alyssa Rose (Lyss). Both of us are nurses, board-certified nurse coaches in private practice, and most importantly, former athletes.

Alyssa is a former soccer player residing in Chicago. She spent much of her life playing competitive sports, and now dedicates her time supporting other high-achieving former athletes maintain the work ethic they desire without burn-out, negative self-talk, or comparison.

Lyss was a D1 Swimmer and still crushes it in the gym, on the yoga mat, and in her business. She currently lives in New York while running her online practice focused on getting you unstuck, growing your self confidence and taking control of your mind, body + soul health

We are so deeply excited to bring this passion project to life and create a safe space for former athletes, no matter the level, to be heard, accepted, and loved!
